BASIC SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

PHOENIX REDBACK pistols have been designed, manufactured and inspected according to the latest technical knowledge and the recognised safety-related technical rules and regulations. Nevertheless, the use of the pistols may result in injury or death of the user and third parties, or damage to the weapon and/or other material property.

● Follow all the instructions in this operator'smanual.Non-compliancemay result ininjury or death.

● Neverhandletheweaponifyouaretired,feelingunwell,orwhenyouhavepreviouslyconsumed alcohol, drugs or any type of medicine.

● Alwaysfollowtheinstructionsprovidedbytheirrespectivemanufacturerswhenusingaccessories and ammunition.

● Alwaysfollowallvalidprovisionsforhandlingweapons,accessoriesandammunition.

Operator's manual (OM)

● TheOMisanintegralcomponentoftheweapon.KeeptheOMfortheentireservicelifeof the weapon and pass the OM to any subsequent operator or owner.

● DonotusetheweaponuntilyouhavereadandunderstoodthisOMcompletely.

Safety instructions for the handling of pistols

● Specialcaremustbetakenwhenhandlingpistols,becausethepositionanddirectionof the weapon can be changed very easily.

● Usetheweapononlyforitsintendedpurpose.Donotusetheweaponasaclub,ham-mer, pry bar, etc. Using the weapon for other than its intended purpose may result in accidental discharge of weapon or damage to the weapon.

● Alwaystreattheweaponasifitisloadedandreadytofireuntilyouhaveperformedapersonal safety check.

● Before handling, in case of trouble and before cleaning, ascertain - whether the pistol is unloaded (cartridge chamber free), - whether the barrel is free of obstructions and - whether the magazine is empty.

This operator's manual is dedicated to persons who are authorized to use the described weapon. This operator's manual describes the construction, the function and the handling of the pistol. To understand this operator's manual basic knowledge about the technical rules of shooting and firearms is indispensable. WARNING: This operator's manual cannot replace proper shooting instruction and training!

Safety features

Safety instructions for drop safety

● Dropsafetyisaffectedbymanyfactors,suchas:fallheight/angle,ground,type/fre-quency of impact, handling and treatment of the weapon, loading and safety status of the weapon, accessories and equipment configuration of the weapon and the ammu-nition used. Regardless of a weapon’s manufacturer or model, absolute drop safety is not possible and can only be checked based on defined test parameters.

● Makesurethattheweaponisalwaysunloadedwhenitishandledforpurposesotherthan loading or firing.

● Alwaysensureforweaponswithasafetyleverthatthesafetyleverisnotputtothe«Fire» position earlier than immediately before firing.

● Setthesafetylevertothe«Safe»positionduringeverypauseinfiring.

Malfunctions

● Usersarestrictlyprohibitedfromtroubleshootingfaultsthatgobeyondthescopeofthisoperator'smanual!Onlyauthorisedspecialistsmayrectifymechanicalfaultsintheweapon.

● Alwaystreattheweaponasifitwereloadedintheeventofamalfunction.● Immediately rectify any faults/malfunctions that compromise safety. If rectification is

impossible, stop handling the weapon until a specialist has been able to repair the weapon.● Disassemblethepistolonlyasfarasdescribedinthismanual.● In caseof faults/errors/malfunctions that youcannot solveby yourownor that go

beyond the scope of this operator's manual hand over the weapon to the manufacturer or to authorised specialists/trained firearms personnel for inspection/repair.

Unusual stresses

● Exposure to unusual/exceptional stresses such aswhen theweapon is banged ordropped canhavea negative effect on safety. After exceptional stresses, have theweapon inspected by the manufacturer or trained firearms personnel.

Safety instructions for firing

● Alwayswearhearingprotectionwhenfiringthepistol.● Alwaysweareyeprotectionwhenusingorfiringthepistol.● Donotgraspoverthemuzzleandalwayskeepthemuzzleareaclearwhenfiring.● Afterfiringwearprotectivegloveswhentouchingthebarrelorotherpartsofthepistol

which heat up during firing.● Onlyuseproperly loaded,undamagedcartridgesof thecorrectcalibre (refer to the

additional instructions given on page 16).● Do not shoot at doors, panes of glass, walls, concrete, stone, or smooth surfaces

(includingwater).Abulletcanpenetratetheseobjectsorcanbedeflectedinanunsafedirection.

● Pullthetriggeronlyiftheweaponsightsarepointingattheintendedtargetandifyouare sure that the areas between you and the target, beside the target and behind the targetisnotendangered.Observetherule«Besureofyourtarget»(bullettrap,checkenvironment,etc.).

● Thetriggermustbepulledbackcompletelywhenfiringthepistol.Mindthatwhenfiringin rapid succession, the trigger must be released completely and return to the fully forward position after every shot.

● Alwayskeepyourfingersofftheslideandbehindthemuzzleareawhenfiringthepistol.

Handing over the weapon

● Donothandover/entrustthepistoltoanypersonwhoisnotentitledtopossesstheweapon. Observe all applicable regulations.

● Donotentrustthepistoltoanypersonwhohasnotcomprehensivelyreadandcom-pletely understood this operator's manual.

● Neverhandoverorreceivethepistolunlessitisunloadedandtheslideislockedback(slideopened).

Storage, transport and disposal

● Alwaysstorethepistolandammunitionseparately.● Alwaysbesuretopreventaccesstothepistolandammunitionbyunauthorisedper-

sons, especially children.● Alwaysfollowtheapplicableprovisionsforthetransport,theshipping,thedestroying

and the disposal of weapons and ammunition.

Technical safety instructions

● Alwaysusesnapcaps(dummycartridges)fordryfiringexercisesinordertopreventexcessivewearofthefiringpinorthemagazinelips.

Use of accessories

● Atregular intervals inspectanyaccessoriesmountedontheweapon(e.g.silencers,lightsoroptics)forsecureattachment.

● Alwaysfollowthedetailsandtheoperator'smanualfromtherespectivemanufacturersof any accessories mounted on the weapon.

PRELIMINARY NOTES

The PHOENIX REDBACK pistols are self loading pistols with a locked and buffered breech system. They work with a semi automatic recharge, according to the principle of the mechanically locked recoil loader.

The PHOENIX REDBACK pistols are available in different calibres(markedonthebarrel)and versions (Light, Ultra Light, Open, Carry Optic etc.)aswellas indifferent variants (SA/DA,SAonly,big/smallsafetylevers,straighttriggeretc.)anddifferentcolourschemes.

A perfect function and long life of the pistol PHOENIX REDBACK can only be ensured by a correct handling, operation and maintenance subject to the instructions of this operator's manual.

The indications «right», «left», «at the front» and «at the back» are related to the shooter’s point of view when he holds the pistol in his hands and looks at it as when firing.

Each description of pistol parts, each function and each manipulation is only specified once. Therefore, there will be a reference to already covered descriptions of pistol parts, functions and manipulations in other sections.

COMPONENTS OF THE PISTOL CHECKING THE PISTOL

Checking before use

● Makesurethatthepistolisunloaded(cartridgechamberfree;magazineremoved).● Makesurethatthebarrelisfreeofobstructions.● Checkthepistolforproperconditionandtroublefreefunctioning(seebelow).

Checking after use

Functional test of slide and frame

Functional test of the smooth operation of the firing pin

● Afterwardsthefiringpinmustsmoothlymovebackintoitsinitialposition.Ifthefiringpin is sluggish or its protrusion is too small, the firing pin and the firing pin hole in the slide must be cleaned.

Disassembly of the firing pin

● Remove theslide, then remove the re-coil spring and the barrel (see page 20).

● Push the firing pin entirely forward by means of the cleaning bar (photo 1).

● Thefiringpinmustbevisibleonthefaceof the slide and its protrusion should be approximately2,0mm(photo 2).

Cleaning of the firing pin

● Takeoutthefiringpin(see page 14) and remove the spring from the firing pin.● Thoroughlyclean the firingpin, the retainingplateand thespringbymeansofgun

cleaner and a brush. ATTENTION: Do not use aggressive agents or cloths with abrasive orscratchingproperties!

● Thoroughlycleanthefiringpinholeintheslidebymeansofguncleanerandabrush.● Slightlylubricatethefiringpin,thefiringpinspringandthefiringpinholeintheslide.

Dangerous spring tension! Wear eye protection! CAUTION

● The firing pin is under spring tension! Press and hold the firing pin securely down with the mandrel! Wear eye protection!

● Pressdownthefiringpinbymeansofafinemandrel.Thenpushtheretainingplateofthefiringpinapprox.1millimetreoutoftheslide(photo 1). Hold it in its position and securely press down the firing pin by means of the mandrel. Now you can completely remove the retaining plate and take out the firing pin (photo 2).

● Installthespringonthefiringpinaninsertbothtogether(conicaltipahead)intothefiring pin hole in the slide. Then press down the firing pin by means of a fine mandrel (photo 1).

● Insertthefiringpinretainingplate–widepartforwardandL-shapedcut-outontheleft–intoitsguidegroovesintheslide(photo 2). Make sure that the firing pin locks in place and engages fully into the hole of the retaining plate.

Dangerous spring tension! Wear eye protection! CAUTION

● The firing pin is under spring tension! Press and hold the firing pin securely down with the mandrel! Wear eye protection!

Loaded chamber indicator

●If a cartridge is loaded into the cartridge chamber (photo to the right) the loaded cham-ber indicator of the pistol is engaged (slightly raised) and can be felt with the fingertip. Additionally the base of the cartridge is visible between the slide and the breech.

HANDLING AND OPERATION

Principles of handling and operation

● Always treat the pistol as if it is loaded and ready to fire!● Never point the pistol at anyone or anything that you don't want to destroy. Always

point the pistol at a safe direction!● Keep your finger off the trigger and hold it outside the trigger guard until you have

aligned the sights of the pistol toward the intended target! Never touch or pull the trigger while loading, unloading, drawing or otherwise handling the pistol. The trigger may only be pulled if the sights of the pistol are aligned toward the intended target.

● Always be sure that the weapon is pointing at the intended target and that the areas between you and the target, beside the target and behind the target are not endangered BEFORE you put your finger on the trigger! Observe the rule «Be sure of your target» (bullet trap, check environment, etc.)!

● Never use force when handling, disassembling, cleaning and assembling the pistol. Disassemble the pistol only as far as described in this manual.

● Afterextraordinary stresses (bumps,dropsetc.),thegunmustbecheckedbyagun-smith or by the manufacturer.

● Always wear hearing protection and eye protection when using the pistol. When fir-ing, your eyes are endangered by ejected cartridge cases or flying target fragments.

Preparing for shooting

● Makesurethatthepistolisunloaded(cartridgechamberfree;magazineremoved).● Removetheoilfromthebarrelbyusingadrycleaningrod(commercialcleaningmate-

rial)andcheckthatthebarrelisfreeofobstructions.● Checkthepistolforproperconditionandfunctioning(see pages 13 and 14).● Insertanemptymagazineandcheckforcorrectengagementofthemagazine.● Inspectanyaccessoriesmountedontheweaponforsecurepositioning.

Filling and emptying the magazine

Filling the magazine● Insert thecartridges (bullet toward the

front)underneaththemagazinelips.

Emptying the magazine● Pushthecartridgeswithyourfingers(do

notuseanytool!)tothefront,takethemout and collect them.

Loading of the pistol

● Insertthefilledmagazineintothegripuntilthemagazinereleaseisengaged.Ensurethatitproperlylocksintoplace(«tapandpull»).Thepistolis«partiallyloaded».

● Retracttheslideuntilstop(thehammergetscocked)andreleasetheslide.● Byslidingbackintoitsfrontpositiontheslidechambersthefirstcartridgefromthe

magazine into the cartridge chamber. The pistol is now «loaded and cocked».● Setthesafetyleverto«Safe»bypushingitupward.● Thepistolisnow«loaded,cockedandsafe».

Only use proper loaded ammu-nition of the correct caliber!WARNING

● All models and variants of the PHOENIX REDBACK pistols in the calibers 9 x 19 mm or 9 x 21 mm have been approved for all ammunition types accord-ing to SAAMI and C.I.P., including US +P ammunition.

● Use only properly loaded ammunition of well known manufacturers, delivered in original packing and of the correct caliber (imprinted on the barrel).

● Use only clean, dry and undamaged new ammunition which corresponds to the specifications of the C.I.P. or SAAMI standardisation organisations.

● Never use dirty, wet, rusty, damaged, oiled, recycled, non factory loaded or self loaded cartridges or ammunition about the quality and / or origin of which you are not sure.

● Always follow all valid provisions for handling weapons and ammunition.

NOTICE

Firing in single action mode

● Loadthepistol(see page 17). The pistol is «loaded, cocked and safe».● Firmlyholdthepistolintheshooting

pistol at your intended target.● Setthesafetyleverto«Fire»bypushing

it downward (photo to the right).● Slowlypullthetrigger.Thecockedham-

mer is released and the chambered cartridge is ignited by the firing pin.

WARNING: After firing a shot the pistol is immediately ready for the next shot (self loading pistol with semi-automatic recharge)!

Firing in double action mode

NOTICE: Firing the pistol in double action mode means that the pistol is loaded (cham-bered cartridge), but the hammer is uncocked before firing.

● Loadthepistol(see page 17). The pistol is «loaded, cocked and safe».● Firmlyholdthepistolintheshootingposition● Alignthefrontandrearsightsofthepistoltowardyourintendedtarget.● Setthesafetyleverto«Fire»bypushingitdownward(photo above).● Holdthehammerwithyourthumbandslowlypullthetrigger.Thehammerwillre-

lease. Use your thumb to prevent the hammer from snapping forward and let it move forward slowly and smoothly, so that it cannot hit the firing pin.

● Pressthemagazinerelease(«1», see photo) and remove the empty maga-zine.

● Insert the filledmagazine into thegripuntil the magazine release is engaged. Ensure that the magazine properly locks intoplace(«tapandpull»).

● Push theslide release («2», see photo) downward OR slightly retract the slide and release it. By this the first cartridge from the new magazine is transported into the cartridge chamber.

● Thepistolnowis«loadedandcocked».

Unloading the pistol when magazine is NOT empty

● After firing a shot in the double action mode, the pistol is automatically reloaded and the hammer is automatically cocked! The trigger then reacts much more sensitively and the pistol shoots in single action mode!

DISASSEMBLY OF THE PISTOL

Do NOT use any tools!Do NOT use any force!

● The pistol is disassembled and assembled WITHOUT ANY TOOLS.● Do not use any force at any time.● The pistol MUST NOT be disassembled further than described below.

● Unloadthepistol(see page 19) and empty the magazine (see page 17).● Retracttheslideuntilstopandpushtheslidereleaseupwardtoholdtheslideopen.● Makesurethatthereisnocartridgeleftinthechamber(«Seeandfeel»).● Release the slide by pushing the slide release downward, decock the pistol (see

page 18) or disengage the manual safety (see page 18 top) and pull the trigger.● Pulltheslidetotherearuntiltheindexlinesoftheslideandtheframemeet(photo①).● Withtheotherhandpressintheaxleoftheslidereleasefromtheright(photo②)and

pullouttheslidereleasetotheleft(photo③).● Pullthetriggerandremovetheslidebyslidingitforwardofftheframe(photo④).● Removetherecoilbuffer/springguiderodagainstthespringtension(photo⑤).● Slightlyliftthebarrelupattheback,pushitforwardandremoveitbackward(photo⑥).

REASSEMBLY OF THE PISTOL

● Insertthebarrelintotheslide.Pressbackwarduntilitlockswiththeslide(photo⑦).● Inserttherecoilspringwithitsguiderodintotheslidebelowthebarrel.Pressthefront

end of the recoil spring guide against the pressure of the recoil spring through the hole provided in the front of the slide. Support the recoil spring retainer at the front of the shelfofthebarrel(photo⑧).

● Inserttheframefromtherearintotheguidinggroovesoftheslideuntiltheindexlinesoftheslideandtheframemeet(photo⑨).

● Puttheslidereleaseintoitsplacefromtheleftsideoftheframeanddepressituntilitengagesproperly(photo⑩).Lettheslideglideintoitsfullyforwardpositionforcedbythe pressure of the recoil spring.

Check the pistol! Work through all functional tests before use!WARNING

● After dis- and reassembly the pistol MUST be checked for proper assembly and trouble free functioning (see «Checking the pistol», pages 13 and 14).

CLEANING AND CARE

Regular checking, cleaning and maintenance keeps the pistol functioning safety and in-creases the service life.

Cleaning materials and tools

For cleaning and maintenance of the pistol the following materials and tools are necessary:● PHOENIXREDBACKcleaningkit(comeswiththepistol).● Cleaningrodsandrags,cleaningsolventandconserv-

ing agents without chlorine or acids.

Do NOT clean the pistol or parts of it with:● Objectsmadeofmetal● Plastics,e.g.Nylon,Perlonorsimilar● Water● Aggressivechemicals,acidsorsimilar.

Normal cleaning

The normal cleaning should be performed after each shooting session● Makesurethatthepistolisunloaded(cartridgechamberfree;magazineremoved).● Disassemblethepistol(see page 20).● Clean fouledpartsandsurfaceson the frameand theslidewithacleaningbrush,

cleaning solvent and rags and then lubricate them lightly.● Moistenacleaningbrushwithoil.Repeatedlypass it throughthebarrel.Thenpass

purecleaningrodsthrough.Finallylubricatetheexteriorandinteriorofthebarrel.● Cleanthemagazinelipsandfollower.● Reassemble thepistol (see page 20) and subsequently check the pistol for proper

assembly and trouble free functioning (see pages 13 and 14).

Major cleaning

The major cleaning should be performed after approx. 1000 rounds or once per year.● Performthenormalcleaning.Additionally:● Disassemblethemagazine(see page 23) and clean the inside of the magazine hous-

ingandtheexternalsurfaceofthefollower.● Checkthefiringpinforsmoothoperationandcleanthefiringpinholeinsidetheslide

(see pages 14 and 15).● Reassemblethepistolandthemagazines(see pages 20, 23) and subsequently check

the pistol for proper assembly and trouble free functioning (see pages 13 and 14).

MAGAZINES AND GRIPS

Changing the grip plates

PHOENIX REDBACK pistols are equipped with interchangeable side plates on the frame. Different side plates allow to customize the scope and shape of the grip to your individual preference.

Disassembly of the magazine

● Press magazine locking plate downthrough the hole of the magazine floor plate. Push magazine floor plate for-ward. Remove magazine components.

Reassembly of the magazine

● Insert the follower and the magazinespring into the housing. Depress the magazine spring. Push the magazine floor backward until it engages with the locking plate.

MAINTENANCE AND REGULAR CHECKING

● Alwayskeepyourpistolincleanandinproperworkingcondition.● Performthenormalcleaningaftereveryshootingsession(see page 22).● Neverchange,modifyorrepairpartsofthepistolbyyourself.● HaveyourguncheckedONCEAYEARbyaqualifiedgunsmith.● Foranyrepairorservice,thegunshouldbesenttothemanufacturer,asallnecessary

special tools and spare parts are available there at all time.● Ifyouordersparepartswithoutreturningthepistolforinspection,serviceandrepair,

orderingthecorrectsparepart(s)isyourownresponsibility.Inthiscaseyouarealsoresponsible for having the parts properly installed by a qualified gunsmith.

● Themanufactureranditsimportersarenotliableforanytrouble,malfunctions,dam-ages or incidents if third parties made any changes, modifications, repairs, attach-ments to or conversion of the weapon and / or its parts and / or if accessories or spare parts from other manufacturers have been used.

Checking the buffer

PHOENIX REDBACK pistols are equipped with a special recoil buffer, which is mounted into the upper frame. The buffer dampens the impact of the barrel and slide on the frame during unlocking and when the slide reaches its furthest rearward position. The results arereduced(felt)recoilforces,morecomfortandlessstrainonthepistolparts.

NOTICE: The polymer buffer (1) is subject to regular wear and tear. It should be checked regularly and replaced if necessary. It MUST be replaced after max. 10'000 fired rounds.

Replacing the buffer

● Unloadthepistol(see page 19) and dis-assemble the pistol (see page 20).

● Useasmallbluntscrewdriverandpushthebuffertowarditscenter(1)andthentiltitforward(2)untilitjumpsoutofitsretaining grooves.

● Insert new buffer from above into theframe and press it down until it properly «clicks» into place.

Improper manipulations of sights can cause severe damages!

● Potentiallynecessarycorrectionsoftheinstallationoftheoriginalfrontandrear sights (e. q. changing of the front sight, drifting of the rear sight) should be done by a specialist (gunsmith, weapons technician) or by the manufactur-er because of the special tools required for this work.

● Fortheadjustmentofafactory-mountedreddotsightonaPHOENIXRED-BACK «Carry Optic»-Model please refer to the operator's manual of the optics manufacturer. Normally you will find it in the package, as it is part of the scope of delivery for all PHOENIX REDBACK «Carry Optic»-Models.

MALFUNCTIONS AND ERRORS, CAUSE AND ELIMINATION

By means of regular maintenance (see page 25) and regular cleaning and care (see page 22) the functional safety and reliability of the pistol is kept on its highest level and the service life is increased. In case of malfunctions work through this trouble shooting chart:

● Removethemagazine.● Retracttheslideuntilstopandpushtheslidereleaseupwardstoholdtheslideopen.● Makesurethatthereisnocartridgeleftinthechamber.● Inspect(visualorbytheaidofatool),thatthecartridgechamberandthebarrelare

both free of any cartridge, bullet or any other obstructions. CAUTION: If there are any obstructions in the barrel (bullet lodged in the barrel) disassemble the pistol (see page 20) and return it to the manufacturer for repair.

● Take out the obstacle. Disassemble the pistol (see page 20), clean it, lubricate it, (see page 22) and reassemble it (see page 20). Check the pistol (see pages 13 and 14).

● Ifnecessaryreturnthepistoltothemanufacturerforinspection/repair.

Possible troubles and how to solve them
