Three Models Deliver Maximum FlexibilityVanguard Instruments Co.’s Model ATRT-01 Series 2 is a third generation micro-processor-based, single-phase, automatic, transformer-turns-ratio tester. Thisportable test equipment is offered in three models: the ATRT-01, ATRT-01B, andATRT-01D. The ATRT-01 is ac-line powered; the ATRT-01B is ac-line or recharge-able-battery powered, and the ATRT-01D is powered by six D-cells.

The ATRT-01 determines the transformer turns-ratio using the IEEE C57.12.90measurement method. The transformer turns ratio is determined by preciselymeasuring the voltages across the unloaded transformer windings. The ATRT-01measuring circuitry self calibrates before each measurement to ensure turns-ratioaccuracy. It requires neither scheduled adjustment nor temperature compensation.

The ATRT-01 measures turns ratio ranging from 0.800 to 15,000, permitting theuser to use the ATRT-01 to test voltage regulators, power transformers, currenttransformers (CT), and Potential Transformers (PT).

The ATRT-01 also measures and displays transformer-winding excitation cur-rent, and winding polarity. Test results are displayed on a back-lit 4x20 line LCDreadout.

In addition to measuring a transformer’s turns-ratio, the user can also enter thetransformer’s nameplate voltages, via the keypad, and the ATRT-01 will then displaythe turns-ratio error as a percentage. This feature eliminates any user-calculationerror when testing transformers.

If the user chooses to test a 3-phase transformer using the ATRT-01, the device willalso provide connection information (ATRT-01 H and X test probes to transformerbushings) for phases A, B, and C tests. Three-phase test results (turns-ratio, exci-tation current, winding polarity, percentage error) are shown on the LCD screen atthe end of each test.

Operator Interface and DisplayThe ATRT-01 displays messages and test results on a 4-line by 20-character, sun-light-viewable, backlit LCD readout. Test results include turns ratio, winding polar-ity, excitation current, and percentage error calculation.

A 16-key membrane keypad lets users select a test and enter the nameplate volt-ages for turns-ratio percentage error calculation.

Computer InterfaceThe ATRT-01, ATRT-01B and the ATRT-01D can be used with an IBM PC. Windows®

95/98/NT/2000/XP-based software (provided with each unit) lets users test trans-formers and store the test results on the computer’s hard drive. Test results can beretrieved later, in an office for example, for analysis and printout on an office print-er. Test results can be made available to the user in ASCII format, thus allowing theresults to be used with other database software packages.

Users can also create test plans for specific transformers. The test-plan compris-es transformer nameplate voltages for each tap setting. Computed turns ratio isbased on the nameplate voltages, which can be compared to the measured ratio toderive percentage error.

Battery Power for Exceptional PortabilityThe ATRT-01B is powered by a 6-Volt, 7 Ampere-hour, lead-acid battery. This highcapacity, plus the low-power consumption circuitry allows the ATRT-01B to be used con-tinuously for up to 6 hours between recharges. A built-in charger lets the ATRT-01B beused while the battery is being charged.

The ATRT-01D uses 6 D-cell batteries. Up to 250 tests can be run on one set ofD-cell batteries.

Vanguard Instruments Company, Inc.

Vanguard Instruments Co., (VIC), was founded in 1991.Currently, our 28,000 square-foot facility housesAdministration, Design & Engineering, and Manufacturingoperations. From its inception, VIC’s vision was, and is todevelop and manufacture innovative test equipment foruse in testing substation EHV circuit breakers and otherelectrical apparatus.

The first VIC product was a computerized circuit-breaker analyzer, which was a resounding success. Itbecame the forerunner of an entire series of circuit-breaker test equipment. Since its beginning, VIC’sproduct line has expanded to include microcomputer-based, precision micro-ohmmeters, single and three-phase transformer winding turns-ratio testers, wind-ing-resistance meters, transformer tap-changing con-trollers, megaohm resistance meters, and a variety ofother electrical utility maintenance support products.

VIC’s performance-oriented products are well suitedfor the utility industry. They are rugged, reliable, accu-rate, user friendly, and most are computer controlled.Computer control, with innovative programming, pro-vides many automated testing functions. VIC’s instru-ments eliminate tedious and time-consuming opera-tions, while providing fast, complex, test-result calcu-lations. Errors are reduced and the need to memorizelong sequences of procedural steps is eliminated.Every VIC instrument is competitively priced and iscovered by a liberal warranty.
