Highly connected, knowledge-enabled operations

SMART MANUFACTURING BEGINS WITH THE CONNECTED ENTERPRISE

The “smart” in Smart Manufacturing is a highly connected, knowledge-enabled industrial enterprise where devices and processes are connected, monitored and optimized to enhance productivity, sustainability and economic performance. Today, this means taking into account advances within a Connected Enterprise that allow smart objects and machines to interact and communicate with one another, configure themselves, analyze data, predict and prevent failures and adapt to changes within the manufacturing process. Self-aware and system-aware, this connectivity drives efficiency and increases business value. Ultimately, every employee is enabled with contextualized information, using smaller footprints of real-time data analytics, and the workforce evolves into a team of knowledge workers as operators.

Enterprises that embrace Smart Manufacturing are flexible, agile, efficient, responsive, collaborative and lean. Central to success are the seamless collaboration and integration of IT and OT, where digital, manufacturing and industrial capabilities can be managed on an ongoing basis, allowing for real-time production modifications based on real-time analytics. This enables production to demand, rather than capacity and the ability to navigate proactively through the supply and demand chain. This adaptability makes it possible to be more competitive, more efficient, more profitable and future-proof.

Through The Connected Enterprise portfolio of products and services, Rockwell Automation helps manufacturers and industrial operators to incorporate Smart Manufacturing strategies and capitalize on the promise of an ever more connected world. We do it through a phased approach that allows you to leverage your existing automation assets while preparing for the next generation of integrated control and information innovations.

MANUFACTURING WILL CHANGE MORE RADICALLY IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS THAN IT HAS IN THE LAST 20 YEARS…… ARE YOU READY?Discover How to Bring the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) to LifeSmar t manufac tur ing is the gateway to digita l transformation. Connected smart devices open new windows of visibility into processes. This new direction is highly-connected and knowledge-enabled, where devices and processes are connected, monitored, and optimized data and analytics enable better and faster decision making. Seamless connectivity spurs new collaboration.

Survey finds industry is eager but unprepared for the IIoTThis potential is not lost on manufacturers. Three-quarters of manufacturers say they will increase their use of smart devices or embedded intelligence in production over the next 2 years. Many manufacturers also say that they remain unsure of how to capitalize on the IIoT. They need to implement the necessary changes in their operations to take advantage of it.

As per MPI Internet of Things Study most manufacturing companies have limited understanding of how to apply the IoT to their manufacturing business.

The Connected Enterprise makes all this possible. It converges plant-level and enterprise networks, and securely connects people, processes, and technologies.

pioneered by Rockwell Automation and proven with significant reductions in costs and improved capabilities. Rockwell Automation developed a five-stage maturity model that incorporates measures and best practices necessary to ensure effective change in both technologies and organizational cultures. It also has partnered with Cisco Systems®, Microsoft®, Panduit®, and others to establish an OT/IT knowledge bridge for manufacturers and industrial operators.

ROCKWELL AUTOMATION ON THE MOVE 20176

Every manufacturer will enter and progress through the stages of the Connected Enterprise Maturity Model that is most appropriate for it, at a pace determined by its own needs, infrastructure, readiness, and resources. At Rockwell Automation we have worked with organizations that are in relatively advanced positions (as identified by the assessment of Stage 1), already leveraging their WDC (Stage 3) and collaborating with suppliers. We have also have worked with companies at the beginning of their IT/OT Intelligence Journey. There are significant opportunities and profits for both.

Based on the experience of Rockwell Automation’s own journey towards The Connected Enterprise and codification of the five stages, manufacturers with which Rockwell Automation now works experience accelerated advancement via The Connected Enterprise Maturity Model.

Like many industrial and manufacturing companies, Rockwell Automation itself has a diverse product portfolio. Its plants are spread across the globe and across a variety of manufacturing processes, averaging 200 different part numbers per order and a product life of 20 years. Rockwell Automation plants like those of its customers – needed agility and flexibility to cater to the variety of anufacturing processes and supply chains at a faster rate. They also needed to meet quality standards and control cost. Nearly a decade ago, Rockwell Automation developed a five-year plan that would restructure its facilities and supplier network entirely. The plan took into account individual locations and products produced at each facility; new technologies needed to tighten control of the supply chain; and new suppliers that would be needed to support the new layout on this journey , Rockwell Automation evolved and codified The Connected Enterprise 5 Stage Maturity Model as Standard Operating Model for any type of manufacturing operations. With this model Rockwell Automation achieved the following results:

The company lowered inventory from 120 to 82

days, and realized 30 percent savings annually

in capital avoidance

The supply chain has seen an increase in on-time

delivery from the mid-80s to 96 percent – and lead

times have also been reduced by 50 percent

On-time-to-want availability improved from 82 to 98 percent, and there has also been a 50 percent

reduction in parts per million defects through

improved quality

Better and faster decision making enabled by better information helped deliver

4 to 5 percent annual productivity

ROCKWELL AUTOMATION SHOWCASE

The Connected Enterprise brings major advances in Information technology and operations technology to life in manufacturing and industrial operations, helping to drive new ways to innovate and operate.

The Connected Enterprise is a highly connected, knowledge-enabled industrial enterprise where devices and processes are connected, monitored and optimized to enhance productivity, safety and security, sustainability and economic performance.

Through The Connected Enterprise, Rockwell Automation helps organizations capitalize on the promise of an ever more connected world in the form of higher manufacturing velocity, more agile response to changing conditions, reduced costs and lowered risk.

We accomplish this by leveraging advancements in technology, where smart objects and machines interact and communicate with one another, configure themselves, analyze data, take action by predicting and preventing Failures and adapting to changes within the process. Many companies are already seeing the business values. A cogentproof point is our own journey to a Connected Enterprise. We’ve seen success in lowered inventory, increased on-timedelivery, improved on-time-to-want, and overall better quality.
