h e s o f t w a r e p a c k a g e5.0.0 for the VISOCALL IPcommunication platform

impresses with exciting optimisationsand advanced features. Edwin Fisar, director of product management forcommunication systems at SchrackSeconet, outlines some very practicalinnovations.

Reminder function on thecommunication terminal

While previously staff had to keep aneye on the clock during therapies that havea limited duration, a “countdown” cannow be easily set on the communicationsterminal. After the desired time haselapsed, there will automatically be acall, reminding the staff of the end ofthe therapy.

Additional call functionson the patient terminal

If a patient would like a glass of water, for example, the call should go to theservice staff rather than to a qualifiednurse. To this end, there was always acorresponding service button on thepatient terminal of VISOCALL IP. What

is new is that it is now possible to set awhole series of additional call functions. Thus, new mothers on the maternityward can specifically call the maternitynurse, service staff or a cleaner, forexample. These calls can be freelyprogrammed and so adapt to theorganisation and the possibilities ofthe operator.

New control panel

With the redevelopment of theVISOCALL IP control panel, convenientoperation is now available by means of atouchscreen. Furthermore, the individualscreen windows can be individuallyadapted to the needs of the staff. In thisway, only information that is reallyneeded is displayed on the monitor.

Fewer cables

Cost savings are achieved by the newsystem switch. This hardware is nowequipped with a safe and supervised 24-Volt output, which can power variousother system devices, so that in totalfewer and thinner cables must be laid. This results in further cost savings inplanning and installation.

new Schrack Seconet aspirating smoke detectorensures economical fire detection for smaller

monitoring areas. The ASD 531 is based onthe same functional principle as the larger ASD 535and is available immediately

The Schrack Seconet aspirating smoke detectors are amongthe most reliable early fire warning systems: they are robust, durable and highly sensitive to developing fires. In addition tothe proven ASD 535, a smaller model is now available: thenew ASD 531 is based on the same functional principle as itsbig brother and ensures efficient monitoring of small- andmedium-sized areas.

Compact unit for smaller monitoring areas

The ASD 531 has a connection cable up to 75 m in lengthand is thus optimised for the monitoring of clean rooms inlaboratories, ventilation ducts, hoistways and other difficult-to-reach areas.

The new aspirating smoke detector is not only highlysensitive (according to EN 54-20 for all three sensitivity

classes A, B and C), but also particularly reliable. For example, the airflow is constantly monitored for pipe breakage orcontamination of sampling points.

Planning is especially convenient thanks to the projectplanning software. The program automatically creates an orderlist for the required components and outputs parameters inaccordance with the relevant standards. The system is suppliedfully assembled, allowing for quick and reliable commissioning.

ven under difficult atmosphericconditions, the ADW 535 line-type heat detector provides

reliable fire detection. Now thereis the ADW 535 HDx, a new system, which was specially developedfor the special requirements inhazardous areas.

Extreme moisture, high temperaturesor corrosive gases: where simple firedetectors no longer work, the range ofoperation of the ADW 535 line-type heatdetector begins. The sensing tube is madeof sturdy materials and thus completelyshielded from mechanical or chemicalinfluences. Now, with the ADW 535HDx you have an additional device formonitoring the risk of explosion. It isapproved in accordance with VDE 0165

E for zones 2 and 22, itsresponse behaviour is testedaccording to EN 54-22,class A1I to GI .

Intelligentcompensation of

temperature fluctuations

The new ADW 535HDx comes intwo versions that have one or two sensingtubes. Simple systems can be configureddirectly on the device without a PC;however, for more complex systemsand specific adjustments, configurationsoftware is available. In addition, aproprietary planning tool is available, with which the tube layout can be drawnwith a few mouse clicks.

A

ASD 531: New compactaspirating smoke detector

Just like the standard versionADW 535, the new model makes useof a physical property of the air: whenthe ambient temperature rises in caseof a fire, the pressure increases in thesensing tube. This increase in pressureis detected by a sensor in the evaluationunit and evaluated by an algorithm.Once a defined value is exceeded, thesystem triggers an alarm.

s part of the refurbishment of the state hospital inBregenz, Austria, Schrack Seconet is equipping the

building gradually with the VISOCALL IPcommunications system including TV Mediastream forpatients. There will also be the possibility to charge and payfor these services on demand.

In the Austrian federal state of Vorarlberg, the nurse callsystems are now supplied by Schrack Seconet in all hospitals, with the exception of Hohenems. When refurbishment becamenecessary in 2015, the LKH Bregenz also decided on the installationof the modern communications system VISOCALL IP.

IP-TV and entertainment

The installation has been carried out in several stages sincelast year. In addition to VISOCALL IP, the patient rooms are

being equipped with convenient 15”MediStream terminals that providepremium quality television andentertainment. For this purpose, Schrack Seconet has installeda TV head-end station for IP transmission of the television signalfor the first time. During the refurbishment of the main building, all wards will be equipped with the new technology by 2018.

Easy billing

Altogether, Schrack Seconet will install around 250 BewatecMediStream systems. The project at the LKH Bregenz sets aprecedent, because the multimedia applications can beconveniently billed and paid for in all rooms by means ofVISOTAX IP for the first time. For this purpose, two cashpoints have already been installed and put into operation.

verything for the car under one roof and the testtrack on top of that – this is the concept of theAutopia shopping centre in Istanbul. There are no

problems with the exhaust gases during early fire detection, due to the intelligent systems of Schrack Seconet.

The Autopia shopping centre in Istanbul is uniqueworldwide. Covering an area of 117,000 m2 on three floors, thebuilding offers everything for the car. Around 500 shops exhibitnew and used cars and in addition to that, you find workshops, insurance companies, finance offices and around 50 restaurants.Directly from the shop, you can head to the roof in your desiredcar for a test drive on the 800-metre test track. It could hardlybe easier to buy a car. The project is also impressive with itsdesign, which won an international architectural prize.

The centre’s concept of foolproof early fire detection is alsoimpressive. Throughout the area, MTD 533X CUBUS multiple

sensor detectors are installed that can detect smoke and heat. Inthe corridors, they evaluate exclusively the criterion of heat, thusexcluding deceptive alarms caused by the exhaust gases fromvehicles. In other areas, the intelligent multiple sensor detectorsevaluate heat and smoke combined. Compared to a separateanalysis, this significantly reduces the risk of deceptive alarms.

Scarcely any deceptive alarms

A total of seven Integral IP fire alarm control panelsare used on the site to network the 1,250 multiple sensordetectors. In the long run, the continuous use of theMTD 533X provides important flexibility: the detectorcan be easily reconfigured, if necessary.

he largest, most modern and most famous hospital in thePakistani capital, Karachi, belongs to the foundation ofPrince Aga Khan. In terms of nurse call and fire safety, the

operator group, which currently also builds hospitals in Afghanistanand some countries in Africa, relies on products from the SchrackSeconet company. In Karachi, in particular the innovative remoteaccess to the fire detection and fire alarm systems has earned praise.

Aga Khan has built up a good reputation in Pakistan, as well in manyother emerging and developing countries, as an operator of high qualityhospitals and healthcare facilities. Its facility in Karachi, which was thefirst hospital in Pakistan to be certified by the recognised American JointCommission for its high international standards, is also open to patientsseeking medical help, who, thanks to support programmes, could notafford this otherwise. As a university hospital, the hospital also attachesimportance to the development and in-service training of doctors andnurses.

Technology from the Schrack Seconet company

Six years ago, Schrack Seconet equipped the Aga Khan Hospital inKarachi with nurse call systems. Since that time, VISOCALL IP hasensured smooth and convenient communication between patients andthe nursing staff.

As the building complex is being continuously rebuilt and expanded, new areas and wards are being created all the time. One and half a yearsago, Schrack Seconet was also awarded the contract for the installationof fire detection and fire alarm systems for new building areas due to theexcellent performance of the company’s communications systems.

The technical director of the hospital particularly likes the option ofremote access via RemoteMESSAGE. Sitting in front of his PC, he canconveniently query and operate all fire alarm control panels that arenetworked via the in-house LAN.

T Demo ward with live effect

In what is presumably a global first, a complete ward was recentlyset up for demonstration purposes only – including several rooms and anurses’ station – and equipped with communication and fire alarmtechnology from Schrack Seconet. This demo ward serves for demonstrationsfor a planned VIP hospital within the campus, which will provide 300beds for the wealthy patients from the world of politics, business andsociety when finally completed.

The management of the Aga Khan Group operates a centralisedpurchasing and planning department for their hospitals all over the world. Thanks to the pioneering technology of Schrack Seconet and the excellentsupport service of the local partners on site, the cooperation between thetwo companies will be continuously intensified. An Aga Khan Hospitalin Afghanistan, which has already been equipped with correspondingcommunication and fire alarm systems, will soon commence operations.Other projects, such as in Tanzania and Kenya, are under discussion.

ccess to the fire alarm system at any timeand from anywhere – with new

applications, this is now alreadypossible with Integral IP. Thanks to

IP technology, all systems can be accessed and dataanalysed in real time – and remote programmingof the control panel is possible too. The customerhas the choice: access via the Internet or via a

he Internet of Things dominatesthe headlines. According toestimates by Capgemini, around

50 billion devices are estimated to beInternet-compatible by 2020. Under theheading Smart Building the future hasalready begun in many cases. Alreadytoday, remote access to heating or alarmsystems in the home is possible. Similarly, building technology in factories or officebuildings can be controlled from anywhere.

Networking and remote access are alsomajor trends in fire alarm technology –Schrack Seconet is active in the forefront inthis respect and already offers two solutionsthat provide location-independent and full-scale access to Integral IP – RemoteMESSAGEfor PC and laptop, IACmobile for smartphoneand tablet. The specific requirementsdetermine the decision for one of the twoplatforms: Via the Internet or a proprietarycompany network, RemoteMESSAGEpermits the central display and managementof one or more systems, even at multiple sites. All data can be merged on a PC; messagescome automatically to the foreground of thescreen, even if RemoteMESSAGE is not justopened on the computer. Notifications arealso possible as an e-mail or SMS.

Remote access via PCor mobile devices

By contrast, IACmobile is the solution ofchoice if the information is to be accessedprimarily on a smartphone or tablet. The appworks on all major operating systems (iOS,Android, Windows Phone). Here, alarms, faultsand messages are also possible as a pushmessage. Thus, important messages appearautomatically on the display, even when theapp is not started. Moreover, IACmobile canalso be accessed in a web browser. Without

any installation and regardless of the operatingsystem, the operating panel is displayed fromthe Web. Both platforms stand for maximumsecurity. Several steps of identification andsecure data transmission protect againstunauthorised access.

Tesco: effective inspections

The British retail chain Tesco is oneof the front-runners in remote access.Together with the installer and service partnerANTES GM, RemoteMESSAGE has beeninstalled nationwide in stores in Slovakia.A total of 50 locations are interconnectedvia RemoteMESSAGE, all the informationgoes directly to the maintenance departmentof Tesco. This ensures optimum transparencyand facilitates the implementation of ongoinginspections. Thus, daily inspection rounds inthe stores are no longer necessary; theprescribed daily inspections in Slovakia canbe carried out remotely via RemoteMESSAGEwithin minutes.

Moreover, the specialists at ANTES GMcan see immediately if a fault occurs and canrespond quickly when necessary. Varioustasks, such as text changes or forwardingof accurate analysis results in case of failure, can be done remotely. This results in importanttime and cost savings, because many journeysare omitted. “We can also assist employeesin the operation of the fire alarm controlpanel in the stores. They are not so familiarwith the technology of course, most actionsare rarely required and their primary goalsare indeed in sales,” says Tomá s Marek, managing director of ANTES GM.

All events are stored in RemoteMESSAGE,intelligent filters can be used to create regularreports. “This also helps to identify recurringproblems that often remain otherwiseundetected for a long time,” says Marek. Thereports are also a key focus in the developmentof RemoteMESSAGE, which belongs to theinformation systems product range of SchrackSeconet. Product manager Rene Türk explains:“In the reports we have changed a lot, theycan now be created in a specific period andyou can also see which messages occurparticularly frequently in a particular system. Also, in the further development, the ease ofuse is an important concern to us. We improvethe structure, for example, we repeatedlyadd new messages and extend the displayoptions.” Also new with RemoteMESSAGE isthe connection to blaulichtSMS – notificationscan be sent via this service now, which ensuresa secure transmission.

he British company Tesco has more than 480,000employees and subsidiaries in eleven countriesand is one of the largest supermarket chains

worldwide. The launch in Central Europe took place inthe Czech Republic and Slovakia, where in 1996 a firstsupermarket chain was acquired. With further acquisitionsand new openings of smaller stores up to large retailcentres, Tesco expanded successively. In Slovakia alone,Tesco has now more than 150 stores and employs around9,000 people. Since 2013,the company has usedRemoteMESSAGE for firealarm systems to solvecurrent tasks for operatingand monitoring via remoteaccess.

Talking about the project:Dalibor Alföldi, Head ofMaintenance Tesco CentralEurope

F&C: : For which purpose is the RemoteMESSAGE systemused by Tesco in Slovakia?RemoteMESSAGE is our online monitoring system. Ourmaintenance employees can connect to it with any computerwithin our network and check the status of a fire alarm controlpanel. They run a daily check of the systems and always haveaccess to the devices from anywhere. In addition to this, theevent history of all events on the systems is a key factor for ourmaintenance employees, as well as for our area managers.

F&C: How is the system set up and how many peopleuse it?We have a hierarchy of different access authorisations within thesystem. Our maintenance group has access to a clearly definedarea in each case and managers get an overview of all thebuildings. Access rights can be set in a flexible way and we can

T adapt the hierarchy and the access to our current needs.Currently the system is used by about 20 employees in theTesco company. In addition, our external maintenance partnerANTES GM works with RemoteMESSAGE to help us quicklyin case of more complicated topics.

F&C: What are the main advantages of RemoteMESSAGEfor you?RemoteMESSAGE stores all events from our fire detection and

fire alarm systems. Thus, we have a verydetailed overview of what has happenedand everything is consolidated in acentral database. With this databaseand event filters, we can easily comparethe status of the fire detection and firealarm systems in all our subsidiaries. We definitely save costs when usingRemoteMESSAGE, as far less manpoweris required for the daily inspection of thefire alarm systems. In addition, we canbetter identify the problems we haveencountered. This also facilitates the

work of our external maintenance partner; the employees areaccurately prepared when they solve a technical problem at asubsidiary. Finally, RemoteMESSAGEalso supports our quality management:our area managers can easily seewhether the necessary ongoinginspections of fire alarm systemshave been executed properly.

In practice: RemoteMESSAGEused by Tesco

Dalibor Alföldi, Head ofMaintenance of Tesco CentralEurope, appreciates the overviewof the fire detection and fire alarmsystems that RemoteMESSAGEoffers at any time.

aced with massively growing datastreams, the topic of cybersecurity

becomes increasingly important.Security expert Alfred Czech talks toFire & Care of typical vulnerabilities inIT security, the most important measuresfor companies and new risks caused bythe Internet of Things.

Fire & Care: You support and advisemany larger and smaller organisationson cybersecurity. What are, accordingto your experience, the most commonvulnerabilities in technical terms?

Alfred Czech: Typical defects on thetechnical side are outdated softwareversions, no adequate virus protection, inadequate backup procedures, a lack ofencryption of critical communicationsand content, physically unprotectedserver rooms and an insufficient networksegmentation, for example, between officeIT and manufacturing IT. Frequently thereare also shortcomings in the authenticationor weaknesses in the overall authorisationand authentication concept.

Fire & Care: But cybersecurity is not justa technical issue. What are the prioritiesin terms of organisational and staffingmeasures?

Alfred Czech: The mostimportant aspect in thecontext of informationsecurity is the sensitisationof our own employees. This can only work ifthey accept certain securitymeasures. Against socialengineering, for example, the best firewall will nothelp. Companies can improve the situationwith awareness campaigns and active riskcommunication. Other staff-related measuresare background checks for employees in keypositions and advanced in-service trainingof your own security officers. Organisationalmeasures range from the security policyup to the definition of detailed standing

instructions and the establishment of amanagement system for information security.

Fire & Care: Who, according to yourexperience, is better protected fromcyberattacks: large or small companies?

Alfred Czech: Large companies tend to bebetter protected than small enterprises, because SMEs rarely have their own securitydepartments; the responsibility for protectionof information is often assigned to IT orfacilities management. When an SME doesnot rely on the expertise of external serviceproviders, there is often no one to officiallytake care of security. Basically, it makes senseif the IT department is primarily concernedwith their core tasks and may ask for externalassistance with respect to such issues. In thefield of office IT, both SMEs and big groupswork with the same operating systems andapplications, and vulnerabilities affect bothequally in this case. What matters here iswhether there are clear processes forprevention, detection and response.

Fire & Care: Which new risks exist nowas a result of the Internet of Things (IoT)?

Alfred Czech: You have to be awarethat each device will be provided with itsown IP address during the course ofthis development. Not only can this resultin an increased attack surface, but it is

also conceivable thatthese computers couldthen be used for DDoSattacks (editorial note:abbreviation of distributeddenial of service, attack ona computer from manydistributed computers).Currently, however, theconcerns related to the

IoT refer primarily to data protectionaspects. Unprotected ports could also openup new intrusion scenarios in future, however. It is conceivable that perpetratorscould thus try to gain access to the dangerdetection system, the intrusion detectionsystem and the closed-circuit televisionsystem.

The most important thing in the contextof information security is the sensitisationof our own employees, this is the convictionof expert Alfred Czech

Therefore, it is so important to use high-quality systems from high quality vendorswho take precautions here. This starts withthe risk-oriented planning of product safetyand includes both software development inaccordance with relevant safety standards aswell as regular product testing by means ofIT penetration testing, i.e. the simulation ofhacker attacks. The specified vulnerabilitiesmust then be promptly eliminated, andthis is why it is so essential to performregular updates as part of the patchmanagement process.

Fire & Care: As a matter of principle, how can companies protect themselvesagainst new security risks?

Alfred Czech: Basically, every companyis at risk of becoming a victim of anattack. First, it is important to gain amore accurate picture of the actual risksby means of a protection requirementanalysis. There are often surprises: the

sensitive issues are sometimes in veryunexpected areas. It is essential to protectyourself when the right topics areconcerned. Important steps for specificprotection include a meaningful networksegmentation for IoT devices, a sophisticatedauthorisation and authentication concept

and monitoring the data communicationin the network. With respect to theirorganisation, companies can only sustainablyprotect themselves if they have an ongoingsecurity risk management strategy andprepare themselves for potential attacks.

ybercrime is a digital special form of organised crime, which is exclusively for profit. In accordance withthe progress of technology, it is currently subject to

rapid changes. While earlier mass e-mails were distributedin broken German, today cybercriminals often spendsignificantly more time preparing attacks. When spearphishing is used, a few targeted e-mails are sent followingextensive scouting activities. A similar type of fraud is thefake president or CEO fraud, to which several companieshave already fallen victim. It is not a cyberattack in the strictsense, but a special form of social engineering, i.e. thetargeted influencing of people to manipulate their behaviour.

In addition, we are currently experiencing a huge increasein the range of Encryption Trojans. This malicious software

is introduced into networks or devices. It then encrypts allof the user’s data and transmits the decryption key only aftera bank transfer to a specified account. Mostly, criminals usethe digital cryptocurrency Bitcoin here. Another recent formof cyber-extortion are threatened (and in case of non-paymentof the sum claimed also often performed) DDoS attacks(short for Distributed Denial of Service) on companynetworks. Here, gigantic botnets, i.e. hijacked computers, are misused to paralyse corporate servers through an enormousnumber of enquiries. Industrial espionage also uses IT-based attacks. In competition spying, companies often useservice providers from the darknet on the rent-a-hackerprinciple.
