OMP’s Intent

• Raise awareness of issues

• Reach out to eligible youth

• Connect youth across all branches of the military

• Create and promote local partnerships

*The 2012 and 2014 JSTC trainings identified the same military youth program issues.

“Teens should be placed in as many leadership roles as possible within youth programs. Ideally, if we are trying to attract teens, OMP needs to be youth-directed, staff supervised.” – OMP Planning Committee Member

Service ProjectGathering necessary resources (food, clothing, etc.) for a local youth homeless shelter,

Visiting or sending hand written letters to a local children’s hospital,

Tutoring children from the local school,

Creating an awareness video about local childhood issues and possible solutions,

Encouraging families to sponsor children in need from reputable organizations

2013-2014 Lessons Learned

• Use the CDC cooks to support meal services at your OMP event.

• Plan a few outside and off-site events to provide a scenery change.

• Provide separate activities for younger and older teens, males and females.

• Use OMP as a platform for the current MYOY to speak about his/her experience.

• Ask the PAO to capture high resolution photos/video.

• Create a back-up plan for inclement weather and possible scheduling conflicts (Prom).

• Ensure all sites have equal responsibilities (Partnered events).

2014 Event Spotlight

Atsugi, Yokota, Yokosuka Joint Event (Japan)

• Staff created a difficult riddle and hid clues throughout the building.

• The riddle became a talking point all night.

• Only 1 teen solved the riddle and it took him 5 hours to solve!

Naval Station Everett (Washington)

• OMP event featured a campout at the MWR Outdoor Recreation property.

• Each youth challenged themselves on the Alpine Climbing Tower (seen right).

US Coast Guard Base Kodiak (Alaska)

• OMP allowed USCG Kodiak to have their second overnight lock-in EVER!

• Velcro (Spiderman) inflatable wall.

• Dodgeball tournament!

JB McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst (New Jersey)

• What’s Done in the Dark? Discussion facilitated by AF Teen Council Rep.

• Awareness on violence, teen suicide, and self harm.

Hill Air Force Base (Utah)

• Organized a pie-in-the face fundraiser.

• $120 was raised to Aid the Philippines.
