Units out of contact move behind the in-contact units at the rate of 4 squares per campaign move (dismounted units) or 6 squares (mechanized units), this is called an out-of-contact move and may not be conducted through enemy lines into their rear without a scenario. Each square on the map represents one square foot of game board. Each map is roughly 27 by 19 feet of game area. If players game on a 4 by 8 game board there should be roughly (depending on the movement of the enemy) 5 scenarios for each division to move across each map. With 5 divisions in the German starting line up that should be a minimum of 25 scenarios per map, excluding any Soviet counter-attacks or successful holding actions. It is recommended that you make a clear template the size of your game board reduced to map size to place on the map as an aid to building the terrain on your game board. Campaign Replenishment The campaign turn track also has listed re-enforcements in terms of personnel and vehicle points that players can spend to replenish units. These points relate to the points value of the units as BKC stands which means an infantry platoon is roughly 30 points. Units can only be brought back up to strength if they are removed from contact and moved to the replenishment area. Replenishment areas are city or town nearest the friendly edge of the campaign map that is still in friendly hands. Players may not over build units but points maybe accumulated for use later on. There are also the historical re-enforcement units that will be added from time to time as both sides seek a decision. These re-enforcements detailed as to where and when they arrive.

Operation Barbarossa Campaign Introduction

The main objective of this campaign is to create a fun easy to use generator of multiple linked scenarios for club or tournament play. This first campaign is set against the backdrop of the drive on Moscow by Panzer Gruppe Gurderian during Operation Barbarossa.

This campaign is bath-tubbed, that is to say that the distance on the maps and the size of the forces involved has been reduced to make the campaign manageable on the tabletop. Each division represents roughly a re-enforced regiment in war game platoon scale. Each inch of ground represents 200 yards in real life and the map area has had the terrain simplified. Campaign Turn

A campaign turn is considered played when all units in contact have fought one scenario each or if the opposing side refuses contact then they have moved their forces back one out-of-contact move. All campaign movement is conducted in terms of scenarios played. Each unit in contact conducts a scenario and at the end of that scenario their positions on the game board are recorded correspondingly on the campaign map. Units out of contact move behind the in-contact units at the rate of 4 squares per campaign move (dismounted units) or 6 squares (mechanized units), this is called an out-of-contact move and may not be conducted through enemy lines into their rear without a scenario.

Campaign Map

Two maps are provided; Brest, which is the first stage of the operation and; Minsk, which is

the second stage of the operation. Each square on the map represents one square foot of game board. Each map is roughly 27 by 19 feet of game area.

If players game on a 4 by 8 game board there should be roughly (depending on the

movement of the enemy) 5 scenarios for each division to move across each map. With 5 divisions in the German starting line up that should be a minimum of 25 scenarios per map, excluding any Soviet counter-attacks or successful holding actions.

It is recommended that you make a clear template the size of your game board reduced to

map size to place on the map as an aid to building the terrain on your game board.

Campaign Replenishment The campaign turn track also has listed re-enforcements in terms of personnel and vehicle

points that players can spend to replenish units.

There are also the historical re-enforcement units that will be added from time to time as

both sides seek a decision. These re-enforcements detailed as to where and when they arrive.

Campaign Air War

Both sides have fighters and fighter-bombers. Each side allocates fighters to fly air patrol over the battle space in secret and fighter bombers to close support (again in secret). Once the allocation is decided both sides reveal the numbers of fighters they have allocated. The side with the excess fighters is considered to have air superiority (modern fighters count as 1 point each, while biplane fighters count as 1/2 point). No side may allot their total fighter strength at any one time except for the Germans on the first campaign turn.

The excess number of fighters has two purposes; one; it is the number of fighters the Losing side must lose from their inventory of fighters; and; it is the number of fighter-bombers that will not be available to the losing side after their allocation of fighter bombers during that campaign turn. Each time a side loses a bid for air superiority it must eliminate a fighter-bomber from its inventory for each enemy fighter in access.

After allocating fighters to air superiority, the Soviet player must roll two dice. The result of this roll is the number of fighters that the Soviet player must reduce from his air superiority bid due to mechanical failure.

Once fighters are allotted, the each player reveals how many fighter bombers he has

allotted. The player that lost the contest for air superiority now reduces his fighter bomber allotment by the excess of enemy fighters. This reduced amount is the number of fighter bomber available to the losing player for that campaign turn. Orders of Battle

There are 7 corps/divisional ORBATs that where used in this campaign; German Panzer Division, German Motorized Division, German Infantry Division, German Cavalry Division, Soviet Rifle Division, Soviet Cavalry Division, Soviet Mechanized Corp. All GHQ units have been reduced to companies in the case of battalions and battalions in the case of regiments unless their strength merited a different treatment.

German Panzer Division The Germans committed 19 Panzer divisions to this campaign with 4 in our area of operations. 1941 Panzer divisions had half the tank strength of their predecessors in 1940 but almost double the infantry. In our campaign each Kampfgruppe represents a reinforced Panzer Grenadier Battalion of which there were 4. German Motorized Division The German army committed 15 motorized divisions to this campaign with 2 in our area of operations. Motorized Infantry divisions were organized as per the infantry divisions except that everyone rode in vehicles. These divisions in 1941 were 9 battalion divisions at full strength and were well equipped. In our campaign each Kampfgruppe represents a reinforced motorized infantry regiment. German Infantry Division The German army committed 104 infantry divisions to this campaign with 6 in our area of

3

operations. Infantry divisions were true foot divisions relying on horses for pulling power and supply. These divisions in 1941 were 9 battalion divisions at full strength and well equipped. In our campaign each Kampfgruppe represents a reinforced infantry regiment. German Cavalry Division In 1941, the German army had just one cavalry division remaining, the 1st, and it was assigned to screen the flank of the main advance to Moscow. This division was picked for this job because it would be operating on the fringes of Giant Priyet Marshes in forested terrain unsuitable for vehicles. In our campaign each Kampfgruppe represents a reinforced cavalry regiment. Soviet Rifle Division The Rifle Division made up the bulk of the Soviet military with 137 available during the opening stages of this campaign. Like all units they were very under strength and, in later stages, very untrained, but they laid the friction carpet that slowed and then stopped the German advance and provided the needed time for the Soviet defense to harden. In our campaign each rifle regiment group represents a reinforced regiment. Soviet Cavalry Division The Soviet army still had the largest cavalry corps of any European power in 1941. These divisions like all others were under strength but represented the most mobile division the Soviets were able to field during the opening months of the campaign. This is because fodder was readily available and a supply of gas was not necessary to move the division. In our campaign each Kampfgruppe represents a reinforced cavalry regiment. Soviet Mechanized Corps Each of these corps had a different issue of tanks. All were under strength on 22 June 1941, most of them by half. In order to bathtub their organization it was necessary to take that strength deficiency into account. Thus I ended up with a divisional sized unit that is roughly twice the size of a bath-tubbed Panzer division. Each battle-group of the corps is a bath-tubbed division unlike the Germans where each Kampfgruppe is roughly a bath-tubbed battalion.
