History of Windows

1975- Bill Gates and Paul Allen (co- founders of Microsoft) team up to create a partnership called Microsoft.

1980- Steve Ballamer joins. IBM proposes they create an operating system for IBM PCs. Microsoft creates “Ms-DOS”.

Fun Fact: Ms-DOS stands for Microsoft Disk Operating System.

1981- IBM PCs with Ms-DOS released to public.

1982-1985- Microsoft works on Interface Manager. Chooses name Windows instead due to ‘boxes’ or ‘windows’.

1983- Windows is announced.

1987- Upgraded version of Windows: Windows 2.0.

History of Windows 1990- Microsoft releases Windows 3.0 and

3.1 two years later. Upgraded graphics performance and icons. 10 million combined copies sold.

1993- Windows NT released.

1995- Windows 95: email, internet, games and software. Sells 5 million in 5 weeks.

1998-2000– Windows 98, Windows 2000, and Windows ME released. Speed/graphics.

2006- Windows Vista released: stronger security.

Created by Apple, based on Unix.

Runs on Apple Macintosh computers only.

GUI similar to Windows, but there are some differences.

Known for being named after cats.

History of Linux Began in 1991 by computer science student

Linus Torvalds.

Linux has become a free, open source, worldwide operating system.

Linux competes to become one of the best operating systems.

Companies take advantage of Linux’s security and cheap licensing costs.

1985- Free Software Foundation established.

September 1991- Linux version 0.01 is created and put on the Internet.

October 1992- First version of Linux. 10MB of space on disk was recommended.

1993- Version 1.0 of Slackware is released.

First issue of Linux Journal published. V1.0 of Suse Linux released. First version of Red Hat Linux. Caldera Linux distributor is founded.

1998- The Open Source Initiative is founded. Google search runs Linux. Penguin Computing the first hardware company to only produce Linux systems.

1999- Linux kernel v.2.2 is released.
