Installation
BEFORE INSTALLING!
NOTE: It is recommended that you quit all other applications before running this program.
NOTE: Some virus detection programs can be set to scan files on open. This setting can interfere with the running of this program.
BEFORE YOU RUN THE PROGRAM!Before you use the program set up a folder/directory on your Hard Drive in which youwish to save your student’s results, say Phonics3.res on WIN.
Installation Instructions 1. WIN:InserttheCDintoyourCDROMdrive.Theinstallprogramshouldautomaticallyrun.On
systemswithAutorundisabled,youwillneedtorun“setup.exe”fromtheCDyourselfas follows: -FromtheDesktop,doubleclickwiththeleftmousebuttononthe“MyComputer”icon. -DoubleclickwiththeleftmousebuttononyourCDDriveicon. -Thiswilldisplayalistoffiles.Doubleclickwiththeleftmousebuttononthefilethatis
called“setup.exe”.2. Click“RuntheInstaller”.3. Thistakesyoutoa“Welcome”screen,click“Next”.4. PleasereadtheLicenceAgreementandifyouagreetoitstermsclick“YesIagree”.5. Select“Singleuser”.Click“Next”.6. Selectyourchoiceofinstallation:Defaultrequires30mb.Fullinstallationrequires55mband
willallowtheprogramtorunatmaximumspeed.Click“Next”.7. Selectwhereonyourharddriveyouwouldliketheprogramtobeinstalled.Ifyoudonotwish
toinstalltheprogramintothedefaultlocationdisplayedonthescreen,usethe“ChangeLocation”button.Click“Next”.
8. Thisscreenwilldisplayyourinstallationchoices.Ifyouarehappywiththesechoices,click“Next”.
9. Adialogboxwillask“Doyouwanttouselocalresultsonthismachine?”Ifyouwishtorecordresultsclick“OK”.Ifyouclick“Cancel”youwillhavetosetuparesultslocationthefirsttimeyouentertheAdministrationorNameListpages.
Minimum System Requirements Inordertoruntheprogramyouwillneed:
WINDOWS–ANYVERSIONS30MbofHardDrivespaceavailableforthestandardinstallation,CD-ROMplayer.Theprogramwillrunatitsoptimumifthemonitordisplayissetto640x480.

InstallationTo Run the Program after installation
WINDOWS:InserttheCDintoyourCDdrive.Clickthe“RunTheSpeller”buttonthatshouldappearautomaticallyonyourscreen.OnsystemswithAutorundisabled,youwillneedtoruntheprogramfromtheprogramgroupinyour“Start”menu.(Note: The CD must be in your CD drive.)
To Uninstall(orreinstallifrequired)
WINDOWS:InserttheCDintoyourCDdrive.Clickthe“RuntheInstaller”buttonthatshouldappearautomaticallyonyourscreen.OnsystemswithAutorundisabled,youwillneedtorun“setup.exe”fromtheCDyourself.Clickonthe“RuntheInstaller”buttonandselectthe“Uninstall”optionwhenasked.

Quick Access to Main Menu at StartupToskiptheintroductorygraphicsandanimationsatstartup,simplyclickthemousebutton.
Skipping Other AnimationsThe“witchinstruction”animationandthebeginningofthe“A”modulescanalsobeskippedbyclickingthemousebutton.
Task Numbers and Task List Eachinteractionhasa“task number”thatappearsineachpageoftheprogrammodules,(bottomleftofthescreen).It is useful to note this number if you wish to go back to a particular task at a later time!Todothis,gototheMainMenuandclickontheTaskListDrawerabovetheNameListbook.ThiswillbringuptheTaskList.Clickonatasknumbertobetakendirectlytothatpartoftheprogram.
Quitting Out of the Program or a ModuleToquittheentireprogramwhileyouarestillinamoduleusingthemouse:clickonthe“MAIN MENU”buttonatthebottomleftofeveryscreen/page.ThiswilltakeyoubacktotheMainMenuwhereyoucanclickonthe“QUIT BUTTON”.
Return to Main MenuTherewillbetimeswhenyouwillwishtoreturntothemainmenuwhileyouarestillinamodule.TheusercanreturntotheMainMenubyclickingonthe“MAIN MENU”button,whichisdisplayedatthebottomleftofeachscreen/page.
Repeat the QuestionShouldyouoryourstudentrequireaquestiontoberepeated,simplyclickonthe“REPEAT”button,whichisdisplayedatthebottomofeveryscreen/page.
Volume ControlsTochangethevolume,usethevolumebuttonslocatedattheleftofthescreen.Youmayalsousethefollowingkeyboardcommands:Toincreaseordecreasethevolume,presscontrol +orcontrol -respectively.

Operating Instructions
The Main Menu ThenumbersonthedrawersbelowthebooksrepresentTheSpeller’s15modules.Afterclickingonadrawer,studentswillbeaskediftheywishtorecordtheirresults.Iftheyselect“no”theywillbetakendirectlytotheirchosenmodule.Iftheyselect“yes”theywillbetakentotheNameListtoselecttheirname,oraddtheirname.(SeeNameListParagraphbelow).

The Name List (run the program)Whenstudentsfirstenterthispage,adialogboxwillaskthemtoselectorcreateafolderinwhichtheirresultswillbestored.StudentsinahomesituationwillnormallyaccesstheprogramthroughtheNameList.Student’swilladdtheirnameintheNameListpage.Onceadded,studentscansimplyselecttheirnameandtheprogramwilltakethemtowheretheyleftoffaftertheirprevioussession.Theycanalsoselectanotherplacetostarttheirnewsessionbyclickingonthe“select another task”button.Ifstudentsdo notwishtorecordtheirresultsanddo notrequiretheprogramtorememberwhichtaskstheyhavecompleted,enterbyclickingonamodulenumberonthedrawsintheMainMenu,orviatheTaskListbook.To add a new name:1.Clickthe“NewName”buttonatthebottomofthescreen.Ifclasseshavebeendefinedbyaparentintheadministrationpages,thentheappropriateclassshouldbeselectedbeforeclickingtheNewNamebutton.Howevertheclasssectionisnormallyusedbyteachersinaclassroomenvironment.2.Enterthename.Clickon“OK”.
Names can be deleted from the Administration page.
The Task List TheTaskListgivestheusertheabilitytoproceeddirectlytoanytaskwithintheprogram.Clickonthe“TaskList”draweratthebottomoftheMainMenu.ThisfunctionisparticularlyusefulwhenithasbeenestablishedfromtheStudentResults,thatthestudenthasaproblemwithcertainwords.Ratherthanrepeattheentiremodule,theparent/teachercanplacethestudentbacktotheareainquestionandstartremedialtrainingfromthattaskonwards.AllTaskswithintheprogramarelistedbymodule.Clickonthelinerepresentingthetaskyourequiretobetakendirectlytothatpartoftheprogram.

Custom Word ListsTheCustomWordListsectionisaccessedthroughtheAdministrationpage. For access to this page command/control click on Admin book in main menu.Some important points to remember:WordlistsareusedintheDmoduleSightWordsactivities.TheCustomWordListjar,givingaccesstothestudent,will only appearifacustomlisthasbeencreatedandassignedtothatmodule.Eachwordlistcanhaveamaximumof8words.Eachlistisassignedtooneormoremodules.Itwillonlybeaccessiblefrommodulestowhichithasbeenassigned.
To create a custom word list1.FromtheAdministrationscreenselect“CustomWordLists”2.Youwillbeaskedwhereyouwishtosaveyourcustomwordlists.Youmaycreateanew folderhere,(orselectyourchosenfolder)andclickonit.2.Clickthe“CreateNewList”button.3.Enteranameforthenewlistandclick“OK”.4.Enteramodulenumber(from1to15)toassignthelistto.Click“OK”.5.Selectawordcategoryfromthefirstcolumn.Ifnocategoriesarelistedusethe“Change SourceDirectory”buttontofindtheextendedwordlistsyouwishtouse.6.Selectawordfromthesecondcolumn.7.Click“AddWord”toaddthewordtoyourlist.8.Repeatsteps5through7asneeded.Thereisamaximumof8wordsperlist.9.Wordscanberemovedfromthenewlistatanytimebyselectingthewordandclickingthe“RemoveWord”button.
To edit an existing list1.Selectthewordlisttobeeditedbyclickingonit’snameinthe“CustomWordList”.2.Clickthe“editexistinglist”button.3.Addordeletewordsinthesamewayassteps5to9in“Tocreateanewlist”above.
Word lists can be copied for use in other modules:1.Clickonthe“Assignlisttomodule”button.2.Selectthelistyouwouldliketocopy.3.Enterthenumberofthemodulewhereyouwishtousethelist.Note: Thisprocessactuallymakesacopyoftheoriginallist.Subsequenteditingordeletingofindividuallistswillnotaffectcopiesassignedtoothermodules.

Creating extra word lists.To select the existing word lists which are included within the Speller CD, use the “Change Source Directory” button and select the “content” folder (directory) on the CD.ExtrawordsmaybeaddedtotheprogrambydownloadingnewwordsfromTheSpellerwebsite(www.phonicsalive.com/wordlist).Whenyoudownloadnewwordsfromthewebsitethenewwordswillbeplacedinafileonyourharddrive.Toselectthesenewwordsandplacethemintotheprogram,pleaserepeatsteps4–8inthe“createacustomwordlist”paragraphabove.

Student Performance ResultsTheprogramfollowsastudent’sprogressthroughouteachmoduleandarecordofachievementcanbeviewedwhilstintheprogram,orcanbeprintedforlateranalysis.Thisreportcanthenbeuseddiagnosticallytodeterminewhetherastudentneedsfurtherrevisionorcanproceedtothenextmodule.Withthiscapacitytheparent/teacherisabletomonitorstudentresultstodetermine:• anindividualskilllevelforeachcomponentofamodule.• astudent’ssuccessratethroughouttheprogram.• whetherastudentisreadytoproceedtoanothermodule.• whetherastudentrequiresadditionalworkonaparticularskill.
TheResultsfilewillincludethefollowinginformation:• ModuleNumber• Student'sName• Dateandamountoftimetakentocompletethemodule• Interactionswithinthesection• Incorrectresponsesforindividualquestions• Percentagescoresforcorrectresponses
TheabilityofPhonicsAlive!toactasadiagnosticprogramallowstheinformationtobeassessedbytheparent/teacher,asanindicationofthestudent’sinabilitywithcertainareasofspelling.Thisdiagnosiscansavemanyhoursofremedialteachingasitgivestheteacherabasisonwhichtoworkwithastudent’slevelofunderstandingSpellingRules.
Saving Student’s ResultsIfyouDID NOTchoosetosetthestoragelocationoftheResultsFileswheninstallingtheprogram,youwillbeaskedtodosothefirst timeyouentertheAdminorNameListpages.Whenthedialogboxcomesupsaying“Pleaseselectwheretocreatethenewresultsfiles,orthelocationofexistingresultsfiles”,clickontheOKbutton.NavigatetowhereyouwishtosavetheResultsfiles,and,ifyouwish,createandnameanewfolderinwhichtosavethem.Whenyouhaveselectedthedesiredlocationclickthe“OK”button.
PLEASE NOTE: Results cannot be written to a locked disk or the Phonics Alive! CD.

The CertificateOnceastudenthascompletedanentiremodule,includingall6wordlists,theywillbegiventheopportunitytoprintacertificate.ThecertificatecanbeprintedinB/Worcolour.Onthecertificatethestudentisawardedapercentagemarkwhichisbasedonthenumberoftimesthattheyselectedthecorrectanswerontheirfirstattempt.Thepercentageonthecertificateistheaverageofthepercentagesachievedforthesectionswithinthatmodule. Ifforanyreasonthecertificatecannotbeprintedatthattime,parentsorteachersmayreprintthecertificatefromtheadministrationpage.
Please note:Acertificatecanonlybeprintediftheentire modulehasbeencompletedandyousavedresultsforthestudent.
Printing and Exporting Results FilesStudentresultsmaybeprintedfromwithintheprogramand/orexportedastextfilesifrequired.Dothisthroughtheadministrationsection/page.For access to Admin section, go back to the Main Menu page and use the keyboard.
