Disposal of the packing mate‐rialThe packaging is designed to protectthe washing machine from damage dur‐ing transportation. The packaging ma‐terials used are selected from materialswhich are environmentally friendly fordisposal and should be recycled.

Recycling the packaging reduces theuse of raw materials in the manufactur‐ing process and also reduces theamount of waste in landfill sites. Ensurethat any plastic wrappings, bags etc.are disposed of safely and kept out ofthe reach of babies and young children.Danger of suffocation.

Disposal of your old machineElectrical and electronic machines oftencontain valuable materials. They alsocontain materials which, if handled ordisposed of incorrectly, could be po‐tentially hazardous to human health andto the environment. They are, however,essential for the correct functioning ofyour machine. Please do not thereforedispose of it with your householdwaste.

Please dispose of it at your local com‐munity waste collection / recycling cen‐tre or contact your Dealer for advice.

Ensure that it presents no danger tochildren while being stored for disposal.

This washing machine complies with current safety requirements.Inappropriate use can, however, lead to personal injury and dam‐age to property.

To avoid the risk of accidents and damage to the machine, pleaseread these instructions carefully before using it for the first time.They contain important information on its safety, use and mainte‐nance.Keep these instructions in a safe place and ensure that new usersare familiar with the content. Pass them on to any future user.

Correct application

This washing machine is intended for use in domestic householdsand similar working and residential environments.

The washing machine is not intended for outdoor use.

It must be used only as a domestic appliance to wash itemswhich are specified by the manufacturer as being washable on thewash care label. Miele cannot be held liable for damage resultingfrom incorrect or improper use or operation.

The washing machine can only be used by people with reducedphysical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience orknowledge, if they are supervised whilst using it or have been shownhow to use it safely and recognise and understand the consequen‐ces of incorrect operation.

Safety with children

Children under 8 years of age must be kept away from the wash‐ing machine unless they are constantly supervised.

Children 8 years and older may only use the washing machine un‐supervised if they have been shown how to use it safely and recog‐nise and understand the consequences of incorrect operation.

Children must not be allowed to clean or maintain the washingmachine unsupervised.

Please supervise children in the vicinity of the washing machineand do not let them play with it.

Technical safety

Please observe the instructions in "Installation and connection"and "Technical data".

Before setting up the washing machine, check it for any externallyvisible damage. Do not install or use a damaged machine.

Before connecting the washing machine, ensure that the connec‐tion data on the data plate (fuse rating, voltage and frequency)match the mains electricity supply. If in any doubt, consult a quali‐fied electrician.

Reliable and safe operation of this washing machine can only beassured if it has been connected to the mains electricity supply.

The electrical safety of this washing machine can only be guaran‐teed when correctly earthed. It is essential that this standard safety requirement is met. If in anydoubt, please have the wiring system of the building tested by aqualified electrician. Miele cannot be held liable for the consequences of an inadequateearthing system (e.g. electric shock).

Do not connect the washing machine to the mains electricity sup‐ply by a multi-socket adapter, extension lead or similar. These donot guarantee the required safety of the machine (fire hazard due tothe risk of overheating).

Faulty components must only be replaced by genuine Miele origi‐nal spare parts. Only when these parts are fitted can Miele guaran‐tee the safety standards of the machine.

The electrical socket must be easily accessible after installationso that the machine can be disconnected from the electricity supplyif necessary.

Unauthorised repairs could result in unforeseen dangers for theuser, for which the manufacturer cannot accept liability. Repairsshould only be undertaken by a Miele authorised service technician,otherwise any subsequent damage will not be covered by the guar‐antee.

If the electrical connection cable is faulty it must only be replacedby a Miele authorised service technician to protect the user fromdanger.

The machine must be isolated from the electricity supply whencleaning and maintaining the machine and in the event of a fault.

The machine must only be connected to the on-site water supplyusing a new hose kit. Old hose kits must not be re-used. Check thecondition of the hoses regularly so that you can replace them ingood time and avoid the risk of any water damage.

The water flow pressure must be at least 100 kPa and should notexceed 1000 kPa.

In areas which may be subject to infestation by cockroaches orother vermin, pay particular attention to keeping the machine and itssurroundings in a clean condition at all times. Any damage whichmay be caused by cockroaches or other vermin will not be coveredby the guarantee.

The machine must not be used in a non-stationary location (e.g.on a ship).

Do not make any alterations to the machine, unless authorised todo so by Miele.

Correct use

Do not install the washing machine in a room where there is a riskof frost. Frozen hoses may burst or split. The reliability of the elec‐tronic control unit may be impaired at temperatures below freezingpoint.

Before using the machine for the first time, check that the transitbars at the rear of the machine have been removed (see "Installationand connection - Removing the transit bars"). During spinning, atransit bar which is still in place may result in damage to both themachine and adjacent furniture or appliances.

Turn off the stopcock if the machine is to be left for any length oftime (e.g. holiday), especially if there is no floor drain (gully) in theimmediate vicinity.

Flooding danger. If hooking the drain hose into a wash basin, check that the water candrain off quickly enough to prevent the sink from overflowing. Makesure the drain hose is secure, so that the force of the water flowingout of the hose does not dislodge it.

Take care to ensure that foreign objects (e.g. nails, pins, coins,paper clips) do not find their way into the machine with the laundry.These may damage components of the machine (e.g. suds contain‐er, drum), which in turn can result in damage to the laundry.

Take care when opening the drum door after using the steamfunction. Danger of burning due to escaping steam and the hightemperature of the surface of the drum as well as the porthole glass.Stand back away from the machine and wait until the steam has dis‐sipated.

The maximum load for this washing machine is 8 kg (dry weight).See the "Programme chart" for the maximum recommended loadsfor individual programmes.

If the correct amount of detergent is dispensed, the machineshould not need to be descaled. If, however, you do wish to descaleit, only use a proprietary natural citric acid based descaling agent.Miele recommends using Miele descaling agent which is available toorder online at www.miele-shop.com or from Miele. Strictly observethe instructions on the packaging.

Textiles which have been pre-treated in solvent based cleaningagents must be thoroughly rinsed in clean water before being wash‐ed in the machine.

Do not use solvent based cleaning agents, e.g. those containingbenzine, in this machine, as this may result in damage to componentparts and create toxic fumes. Such agents also pose a fire and ex‐plosion hazard.

Do not use solvent based cleaning agents, e.g. those containingbenzine, to clean the surfaces of the machine. They can cause dam‐age to plastic surfaces.

Only use dyes specified by the manufacturer as being suitable foruse in a domestic washing machine. Always observe the manufac‐turer's instructions carefully.

Colour run and dye removers contain sulphur compounds whichcan cause damage such as corrosion. Do not use these products inthis machine.

If detergent comes into contact with the eyes, rinse them thor‐oughly with lukewarm water immediately. If swallowed, seek medicalassistance immediately and retain the packaging or label for refer‐ence. Those with skin problems or sensitive skin should avoid theirskin coming into contact with detergent.

Accessories

Accessory parts may only be fitted when expressly approved byMiele. If other parts are used, guarantee, performance and productliability claims will be invalidated.

A Miele tumble dryer can be stacked on top of a Miele washingmachine using the appropriate stacking kit (available as an optionalaccessory). Please make sure you order the correct one for the Mielewashing machine and Miele tumble dryer.

If installing the machine on a Miele plinth, (available as an optionalaccessory, depending on country), please make sure you order thecorrect one for this washing machine.

Miele cannot be held liable for damage caused by non-compli‐ance with these Warning and Safety instructions.

Scrolling through a list

The arrows in the display indicatethat a list is available.

Language

Touching the sensor scrolls down thelist to the next option and touching the sensor scrolls up the list to the nextoption. The OK sensor is used to acti‐vate the option which is currently in thedisplay.

If an option has been activated, this willbe indicated by a tick next to it.

Setting numerical values

A numerical value is highlighted inwhite. Touching the sensor decrea‐ses the value and touching the sen‐sor increases it. The OK sensor is usedto activate the value which is currentlyin the display.

Exiting a sub-menu

Select Back to exit a sub-menu.

Before using for the first time

Before using the machine for thefirst time ensure that it is correctly in‐stalled and connected. See "Installa‐tion and connection". Also checkthat the drain filters are securelytightened to prevent the risk of waterleaks during use.

This washing machine has undergonea complete functional test at the fac‐tory and there will be some residualwater in the drum from this process.

For safety reasons, spinning is not pos‐sible until the machine has been pre‐pared for using for the first time. To ac‐tivate the spinning function you mustrun a wash programme without laundryand without detergent.

Using detergent could result in an ex‐cessive build-up of foam.

This also activates the ball valve. Theball valve prevents detergent escapingfrom the suds container into the sumpduring a wash programme, thus makingmaximum use of the detergent.

Press the button in.

The welcome screen will light up.

Setting the languageYou will be asked to select the lan‐guage you want for the display. It ispossible to change the language at anytime via "Settings".

Removing the detergent car‐tridges from the drumThere are two cartridges containingUltraPhase1 and UltraPhase2 detergentfor automatic detergent dispensing inthe drum.

Reach under the door grip and pullthe door open.

Take the two cartridges out of thedrum.

Shut the door with a gentle swing.

Running the first programme

The TwinDos unit needs to be activa‐ted before running the first pro‐gramme.

The detergent dispensing unit can beused with

1. the Miele 2 Phase System

or2. any other liquid detergent and/or fab‐

ric conditioner

The Miele 2 Phase System

The Miele 2 Phase System uses a basedetergent (UltraPhase 1) and a deter‐gent enhancer (UltraPhase 2). In orderto achieve optimum results, the agentsare dispensed separately during thewash process. The 2 Phase Systemcleans both white and coloured textilesthoroughly. UltraPhase 1 andUltraPhase 2 single use cartridges areavailable to order from Miele or via theinternet at www.miele-shop.com (seeend of this booklet for contact details).

Liquid detergent/Fabric conditioner

The washing machine is supplied withtwo refillable containers which you canfill with liquid detergent and/or fabricconditioner.

How TwinDos works

Automatic detergent dispensing for awash cycle is activated via the Dos sensor.

To use the TwinDos function, you needto specify the following information forthe electronic unit:

1. the detergent type and/or fabricconditioner with which the contain‐ers are filled.

2. the dosage amount of the liquid de‐tergent or fabric conditioner. Thedosage amount for Miele products ispre-set at the factory.

Do not fill the containers with anyspecialist detergents. Use cap dos‐ing or the detergent dispenser draw‐er for these.

Automatic dispensing cannot be selec‐ted with some programmes, dependingon the detergent present in the TwinDossystem. For example, automatic dis‐pensing cannot be activated for theWoollens programme if the Miele 2Phase System is being used. This pre‐vents woollen garments being dam‐aged by a detergent which is not suita‐ble for washing wool.

Inserting cartridges/containers

Keep filled containers or car‐tridges out of the reach of children.Observe the instructions for use andwarning instructions given by the de‐tergent manufacturer.

Press the TwinDos container accesspanel.

The panel will spring open.

Drop the panel down.

Using cartridges

UltraPhase 1 and UltraPhase 2 aresupplied in single use cartridges.

Press the yellow release button (1.)and pull the container out (2.).

Remove the cap from the cartridge.

Push the UltraPhase 1 cartridge intoCompartment 1 until it locks into po‐sition.

Remove container 2 and push theUltraPhase 2 cartridge into Com‐partment 2 until it locks into position.

Keep the containers in a safe place.They can be used for other types ofdetergent.

Using containers

Take the containers out of the com‐partments.

Open the yellow stopper and fill thecontainer with your detergent ofchoice.

Close the stopper and push the con‐tainer back into the compartment.Make sure that it locks into position.

Tip: Make a note of which detergentsyou have filled the containers with sothat you then enter the correct settingsin the electronics later on.

The following liquid detergents and/orfabric conditioners can be used in thecontainers:

Running the first programme

The TwinDos system needs to beprimed before you can use the wash‐ing machine.

To do this you must run a wash pro‐gramme without laundry.

Open the stopcock.

Turn the programme selector to Cot‐tons.

The following will appear in the display:

Degree of soiling

The display will change automatically tothe degree of soiling query:

Select the Heavy degree of soilingsetting with the sensor and con‐firm your selection with the OK sen‐sor.

If the Miele 2 Phase System is beingused, a query about the colour mix ofthe items will also appear.

For whites

Confirm the For whites option with theOK sensor.

Press the Start/Stop button.

Switch the washing machine off atthe end of the programme.

The TwinDos unit is now ready for use.

Energy and water consumption

– Water consumption and energy us‐age are determined by the size of theload. To make the most of your machine,load the maximum dry load for theprogramme you are using.

– When smaller amounts of laundry arewashed, the automatic load recogni‐tion system will reduce the amount ofwater and energy used.

– Use the Express 20 programme forsmall, lightly soiled loads.

– Modern detergents make it possibleto wash at lower temperatures (e.g.20°C). Washing using lower tempera‐ture settings will save energy.

– To maintain the hygiene of the ma‐chine, carry out a hot wash (60°C orabove) using powder detergent atregular intervals. Hygiene info will ap‐pear in the display to remind you tocarry out a hot wash.

Detergent

– For precise dispensing use automaticdetergent dispensing.

– Adjust the dosage to the degree ofsoiling of the laundry.

– Do not exceed the amounts of deter‐gent recommended by the manufac‐turer on the packaging.

When drying with a tumble dryer

Selecting the highest possible spinspeed for the wash programme willsave energy when drying in a tumbledryer afterwards.

EcoFeedbackYou can call up information about theenergy and water consumption of yourwashing machine with the EcoFeed‐back sensor.

The following information will appear inthe display:

– an estimate of the consumption be‐fore the programme begins.

– the energy and water consumption todate during the programme.

– the energy and water consumption ofthe programme which has just beenrun at the end of the programme.

1. Estimate

After selecting a programme, touchthe EcoFeedback sensor.

The estimated energy consumption lev‐els will be displayed as a bar chart.

Touch the or sensor to changeto the estimated water consumptionlevels.

The more bars () visible, the higher theenergy or water consumption.

The estimate will vary depending on thewash programme, temperature and anyoptions selected.

The display will change automatically oryou can return to the standard displayby touching the OK sensor.

Tip: At the end of the programme, be‐fore opening the door, you can view theactual amount of energy and waterused by the programme which has justbeen run.

Empty all pockets.

Foreign objects (e.g. nails, coins,paper clips, etc.) can cause damageto garments and to components inthe machine.

Sort the laundry Sort the laundry by colour and by

care label. Most garments have a tex‐tile care label in the collar or sideseam.

Tip: Dark textiles often contain excessdye and should be washed separatelyseveral times before being included in amixed load. Always wash whites andcoloureds separately.

Pre-treat stains

Badly soiled areas, stains etc. shouldbe cleaned as soon as possible, pref‐erably whilst still fresh. Spillagesshould be carefully dabbed off usinga soft, colourfast cloth. Do not rub.

Tip: Badly soiled areas can be pre-trea‐ted with liquid detergent, stain remov‐ers etc. first, following the manufactur‐er's instructions. With particularly stub‐born stains ask your dry cleaner for ad‐vice.

If you use a solvent-basedcleaning agent (e.g. one containingbenzine) to pre-treat a stain, makesure that any plastic parts (e.g. but‐tons) are protected, and that thecleaning agent is rinsed off beforewashing the garment in the machine.

Do not use solvent-based clean‐ing agents in or on this machine.

General tips

– Curtains: Remove lead weights firstor place in a laundry bag.

– Underwiring and collar stiffeners: Anyloose wiring in bras, shirt collar stiff‐eners, etc. should be removed orsewn in.

– Close any zips, attach velcro fasten‐ers, fasten hooks and eyes etc. be‐fore washing.

– Fasten duvet covers, pillow casesetc. to prevent small items from beingrolled up inside them.

Do not wash any items in this washingmachine which are specified by themanufacturer as not washable on thecare label ( symbol).

Please note the maximum load for thedifferent wash programmes. The rele‐vant programme load is always shownin the display when you select a pro‐gramme.

The most efficient use of energy andwater is achieved when a full load iswashed. However, do not overload asthis reduces cleaning efficiency andcauses creases.

Close the door

Make sure that no items are caughtbetween the door and the seal.

Shut the door with a gentle swing.

The optimum amount of UltraPhase1and UltraPhase2 will be dispensed au‐tomatically according to the colour mixof the load.

Base detergent and detergent en‐hancer will be dispensed in the appro‐priate dosage mix at the ideal timeduring the wash cycle.

Liquid detergent/Fabric conditioner

The most suitable agent will appear inthe display with a tick () beside it.

If both the agents present in the con‐tainers are suitable (e.g. detergent forcoloureds and fabric conditioner) thenboth agents will be selected.

Confirm the option displayed with theOK button or select another deter‐gent or fabric conditioner with the and sensors.

Detergent and/or fabric conditioner willnow be dispensed in accordance withthe wash cycle.

Adding stain remover

There are two options for adding stainremover in addition to using the auto‐matic dispensing system:

– Use cap dosing.

– Add the stain remover to the compartment.

Detergent dispenser drawerToo little detergent results in:

– Laundry not getting properly cleanand with time it may become greyand hard to the touch.

– Greasy particles clinging to laundry.

– Limescale deposits on the heater ele‐ments.

Too much detergent results in:

– Excessive foam which causes a lowlevel of agitation and poor wash,rinse and spin results.

– High water consumption (an addi‐tional rinse cycle will automaticallyswitch in).

– A burden to the environment.

Pull out the detergent dispenserdrawer and add detergent to thecompartments as follows:

Detergent for the pre-wash (divide thetotal recommended amount as follows:add 1/3 to compartment and 2/3 tocompartment )

Detergent for the main wash, includingSoak, if selected

The capsule is opened by the act ofinserting it in the detergent dispenserdrawer. The contents can run out ofthe capsule if you then remove itfrom the drawer before it is used.In this case, dispose of the capsuleand do not re-use it.

The wash programme will dispense thecontents of the capsule at the correcttime.

Remove the empty capsule at theend of the programme.

Deactivating/changing CapDosing

Touch the Cap sensor and followthe instructions in the display.

If a capsule is being used, fabricconditioner cannot be added to the compartment at the same time,as water intake into the compart‐ment when using CapDosing is sole‐ly through the capsule.

6. Start the programme - the end of a programme

The door will lock (the will appear inthe display to show this) and the pro‐gramme will start.

If a delay start time has been selected,then this will count down in the display.At the end of the delay start time or im‐mediately after the programme hasstarted (if no delay start time has beenselected), the programme duration willappear in the display.

The programme sequence is alsoshown in the display. The washing ma‐chine lets you know which section ofthe programme has been reached.

At the end of a programmeThe door is still locked during the anti-crease phase and the following will ap‐pear alternately in the display:

Close the door. Otherwise there is adanger of objects being placed inad‐vertently in the drum. If these re‐mained unnoticed and were washedin the next load, they could damagethe laundry.

Rinse and interim spinThere is a spin after the main wash andbetween the rinses. A reduction in thefinal spin speed will also reduce the in‐terim spin speed. If a spin speed of lessthan 700 rpm is selected for the Cot‐tons programme, an additional rinse isintroduced.

To omit the final spin (Rinsehold) Use the Spin speed button to select

the setting (Rinse hold). The laun‐dry is not spun after the final rinseand remains in the final rinse water.This helps prevent creasing if thelaundry is not going to be removedfrom the drum immediately after theend of the programme.

– To start the final spin:The washing machine will display themaximum spin speed possible. Youcan select a spin speed lower thanthis. Start the final spin by pressingthe Start/Stop button.

– To end the programme:Use the Spin speed button to selectthe 0 rpm setting (Without spin) andpress the Start/Stop button.

The water will drain away.

To omit rinse and interim spinand the final spin Press the Spin speed button.

Select the 0 rpm setting.

After the last rinse, the water will bepumped away and the anti-creasephase will switch in.

In some programmes an additionalrinse is introduced with this setting.

With delay start you can choose whenyou want the programme to start. Youcan delay the start of the programmefrom 15 minutes up to a maximum of 24hours, allowing you to make use ofnight-time economy electricity rates, forexample.

Water plusThe water level in the wash and rinsestages is increased and a second rinseis carried out in the "Separate rinse /Starch" programme.

The correct detergentAll detergents produced for automaticwashing machines are suitable. Followthe manufacturer's instructions anddosage recommendations on the pack‐aging.

The right amount to dispensewill depend on the following:– the soiling level of the load

– the quantity of the laundry

– the water hardness level.Check with your local water supplierif you do not know the hardness levelin your area.

Water softenersA water softener can be used to cutdown on the use of detergents in areaswith water hardness levels II and III.Dispense according to the amountspecified on the packaging. First adddetergent and then the water softener.

You can then use the recommendedamount of detergent for water hardnesslevel I.

Fabric conditioner and liquidstarch at the end of the pro‐grammeYou can dispense fabric conditioner ei‐ther by using automatic dispensing orvia the detergent dispenser compart‐ment.

Automatic dispensing

One of the automatic dispensing con‐tainers must be filled with fabric condi‐tioner.

Touch the Dos sensor.

Activate the appropriate container.

Fabric conditioner will be dispensed inthe last rinse.

Manual dispensing

Add the fabric conditioner or liquidstarch to the compartment or in‐sert the appropriate capsule. Do notexceed the maximum level mark.

The agent will be automatically dis‐pensed in the last rinse. At the end ofthe programme a small amount of waterwill remain in the compartment.

If starching frequently, thoroughlyclean the dispenser compartment,especially the siphon tube regularly.

Colour run and dye removers/dyes

Do not use colour run or dye re‐movers in this washing machine.They can cause corrosion in the ma‐chine.

Dyes suitable for use in domestic wash‐ing machines can be used. However,please note that the salt used in thedyeing process can cause corrosion tostainless steel components in the ma‐chine if you dye frequently. Always ob‐serve the manufacturer's instructionscarefully.

Adding fabric conditioner or liquidstarch separately

Prepare the starch in accordance withthe manufacturer's instructions on thepackaging.

Tip: When adding fabric conditionerseparately, activate the Water plus op‐tion.

Add fabric conditioner to the com‐partment or insert the appropriatecapsule.

Add liquid starch to the compart‐ment and powder or viscous starchto the compartment.

Cleaning the drum(Hygiene info)Washing at low temperatures and/orusing liquid detergent can cause bacte‐ria and unpleasant odours to build up inthe washing machine. Use the Mainte‐nance wash programme to clean themachine. Run this programme regularlyor at the latest when Hygiene info ap‐pears in the display.

External casing and fasciapanel

Disconnect the machine fromthe mains electricity supply beforecleaning or maintenance.

The washing machine must notbe hosed down.

Clean the casing and fascia panelwith a mild non-abrasive cleaningagent or soap and water using a wellwrung-out cloth. Wipe dry with a softcloth.

The drum can be cleaned with a pro‐prietary stainless steel cleaningagent, following the manufacturer'sinstructions on the packaging.

Do not use solvents, abrasivecleaners, glass cleaners or multi-pur‐pose cleaning agents. These coulddamage plastic surfaces and otherparts.

Cleaning the detergent dis‐penser drawerThe pre-wash and main wash compart‐ments of the detergent dispenser draw‐er are self-cleaning. For hygiene reasons, clean the entiredrawer at regular intervals.

Pull out the detergent dispenserdrawer until a resistance is felt. Pressdown the release button and at thesame time pull the drawer right out ofthe machine.

Clean the drawer with hot water.

Cleaning the siphon tube and thechannel

Clean the siphon.

1. Remove the siphon from the com‐partment and rinse under hot runningwater. Clean the siphon tube at thesame time.

2. Replace the siphon.

Clean the fabric conditioner channelwith a brush and hot water.

Liquid starch can cause the siphonto become clogged. Make sure thatyou clean the siphon and siphontube particularly thoroughly after us‐ing liquid starch a few times.

The washing machine has a cleaningprogramme for cleaning the Twin Dossystem containers and the hoses in‐side the washing machine.

Miele 2 Phase System cartridges donot need to be cleaned.

Cleaning the containers and hoses

Clean the container or containers andhoses every time you change brand ofliquid detergent or fabric conditioneror if the system has not been used fora long period of time (more than threemonths).

If the system has not been used for along time the detergent in the hosescan become viscous.The hoses could become blockedand would then need to be cleanedby a service technician.

Cleaning the water inlet filtersThe washing machine has two filters toprotect the water inlet valve. These fil‐ters should be checked every sixmonths or so, or more often if there arefrequent interruptions to the water sup‐ply.

To clean the filter in the union in theopen end of the inlet hose:

First turn off the stopcock.

Unscrew the inlet hose from the stop‐cock.

Remove the rubber seal 1 from therecess.

Using pointed pliers, take hold of theplastic filter bar 2 and remove it.

Clean the filter.

Replace the filter and seal back in thereverse order and reconnect thehose.

To clean the filter in the water inletvalve:

Using pliers, carefully loosen the rib‐bed plastic nut on the inlet valve andunscrew.

Use pointed nose pliers to withdrawthe plastic filter by the bar (see illus‐tration).

Clean the filter.

Replace the filter in the reverse order.

After cleaning the filters, turn on thestopcock and check the connectionis watertight. If water drips out, tight‐en the connection.

The two filters must be put back inplace after cleaning.

Minor faults in the performance of the washing machine, some of which may resultfrom incorrect operation, can be put right without contacting the Service Depart‐ment.

The following guide may help you to find the reason for a fault, and to correct it.You should, however, note the following:

Repair work to electrical appliances should only be carried out by a suitablyqualified person in strict accordance with current local and national safety regu‐lations. Repairs and other work by unqualified persons could be dangerous.The manufacturer cannot be held liable for unauthorised work.

Some of the messages in the display are more than one line long. Touch the or sensor to read them in full.

The programme does not start

dosage amount set. Observe the instructions on the detergent packag‐

ing and the degree of soiling of the laundry. If necessary, reduce the dosage amount by incre‐

ments of 10%.

Hygiene info A programme using a temperature above 60°C hasnot been run for a long time. In order to prevent bacteria and unpleasant

odours building up in the machine, run the Mainte‐nance wash programme using Miele machinecleaner or powder detergent.

The TwinDos container (or containers) is empty. Fill the container or containers with liquid deter‐

If the fault message appears again, contact the Serv‐ice Department. The washing machine can still beused but with reduced functionality.

No detergent and/orfabric conditioner wasdispensed.

Automatic dispensing has not been activated. Touch the Dos sensor before running the next

No detergent/fabric conditioner was dispensed eventhough automatic dispensing was activated. Try again. If detergent is still not dispensed, call the Service

Department.

There are dark specksin the liquid detergent.

Mould has developed in the detergent. Pour the liquid detergent out of the container and

then clean the container thoroughly.

General problems with the washing machine


The machine shakesduring the spin cycle.

The machine feet are not level. Level the machine and adjust the feet correctly.

The laundry has notbeen spun properly andis still wet.

The machine detected an imbalance during the finalspin cycle and reduced the spin speed automatically. Include both large and small items in the load as

this will give better distribution during spinning.

Strange pump noisescan be heard.

This is not a fault.These slurping noises occur at the end of the pumpsequence as a normal part of operation.

Large amounts of de‐tergent residue remainin the detergent dis‐penser drawer.

The water pressure is too low. Clean the water inlet filter. It may be useful to select the Water plus option.

Powder detergent used in conjunction with watersofteners tends to become sticky. In future, add washing powder into the dispenser

drawer first, and then add the water softener.

Fabric conditioner isnot completely dis‐pensed or too muchwater remains in the compartment.

The siphon tube is not correctly positioned or is clog‐ged. Clean the siphon, see "Cleaning and care - Clean‐

ing the detergent dispenser drawer".

General problems with the washing machine


At the end of the pro‐gramme there is still liq‐uid in the capsule.

The small pipe in the detergent dispenser drawer ontowhich the capsule is placed is blocked. Clean the small pipe.

This is not a fault.For technical reasons a small amount of water will re‐main in the capsule.

There is water next tothe capsule in the fabricconditioner compart‐ment.

The Cap sensor was not activated or an emptycapsule was not removed at the end of the last pro‐gramme. Make sure that you remember to activate the Cap sensor the next time you insert a capsule.

Remove and then dispose of the empty capsule atthe end of each programme.

The small pipe in the detergent dispenser drawer ontowhich the capsule is placed is blocked. Clean the small pipe.

The display is in a dif‐ferent language.

A different language has been selected in "Settings,Language ". Set the language you want. The flag symbol will

guide you.

The display is dark. The display has switched off automatically to saveenergy (Standby mode). Press a button. Standby comes to an end.

An unsatisfactory wash result


Liquid detergent doesnot give the required re‐sult.

Liquid detergents usually contain no bleachingagents. They do not remove fruit, coffee and teastains. Use the Miele 2 Phase System. The targeted addi‐

tion of UltraPhase 2 during the wash process re‐moves stains effectively.

Use a general purpose powder detergent contain‐ing a bleaching agent.

Grey, greasy particlescling to washed laun‐dry.

Insufficient amounts of detergent were used to breakdown the particles of grease in heavily soiled laundry. Use more detergent. Before washing the next load, run the Mainte‐

nance wash using Miele machine cleaner or apowder detergent.

White residues whichlook like powder deter‐gent are seen on darktextiles after washing.

The detergent contained compounds (zeolites) to aidwater softening which are not soluble in water. Thesehave ended up on the laundry. Try and brush off the residues with a soft brush

once the laundry is dry. Wash dark textiles using a detergent which con‐

tains no zeolites. Liquid detergents usually containno zeolites.

Use the Dark garments / Denim programme fordark coloured laundry.

The door will not open


The door cannot bepulled open during aprogramme.

The drum is locked during a programme. Press the Start/Stop button. Use the sensor to select Cancel programme or

Add laundry.

The door will unlock and you will be able to pull itopen.

There is still water in the drum and the machine is un‐able to drain. Clean the drain filter and the drain pump as de‐

scribed in "Opening the door in the event of ablocked drain outlet and/or power failure".

The water level in the drum is too high. Cancel the programme. The water will be pumped

away.

Comfort coolingappears in the displayafter a programme hasbeen cancelled.

For safety reasons the drum door cannot be opened ifthe suds temperature is higher than 55°C. Wait until the temperature in the drum has de‐

creased and the message has gone out in the dis‐play.

The following appearsin the display: Service Door release

The door lock has jammed. Call the Service Department.

Opening the door in the eventof a blocked drain outletand/or power failure Switch off the washing machine.

Press the drain pump access panel.

The panel will spring open.

Blocked drain outlet

If the drain outlet is blocked, a largequantity of water can remain in thewashing machine.

Caution: If laundry has beenwashed at a high temperature, waterdraining out of the machine will stillbe hot. Danger of scalding!

Procedure for draining the washingmachine

When draining water from the ma‐chine, do not unscrew the drain filtercompletely or take it right out.

Place a suitable container, e.g. aMiele universal oven tray under theaccess panel.

Slowly and carefully unscrew the filterto let the water out. Be careful not torelease too much water at once. If theflow of water is too strong, some wa‐ter can seep into the washing ma‐chine base and activate the waterprotection float switch. This will pre‐vent the washing machine from func‐tioning.

Tighten the drain filter back up againif you need to interrupt the flow ofwater.

Once the flow of water ceases:

Remove the drain filter completely.

Clean it thoroughly.

Remove any foreign objects (e.g. but‐tons, coins, etc.) and fluff from the fil‐ter housing. Turn the impeller by handto check that it rotates freely.

Replace the drain filter correctly andtighten it securely.

Make sure the drain filter is se‐curely tightened. Otherwise there is arisk of water leakage during use.

Opening the door

Always make sure that the drumis stationary before reaching in to re‐move laundry. Reaching into a mov‐ing drum is extremely dangerous.

Use a screwdriver to unlock the door.

Pull open the door.

Installation surfaceA concrete floor is the most suitable in‐stallation surface for a washing ma‐chine, being far less prone to vibrationduring the spin cycle than woodenfloorboards or a carpeted surface.

Please note:

The machine must be level and se‐curely positioned.

To avoid vibrations during spinning,the machine should not be installedon soft floor coverings.

If installing on a wooden joist floor:

We recommend a plywood base atleast 59 x 52 x 3 cm). The baseshould span several joists and bebolted to the joist and not only thefloorboards. Check for the presenceof pipes and cables first.

Tip: If possible, install the machine in acorner, as this is usually the most stablepart of the floor.

If the machine is installed on araised plinth, it has to be securedagainst slippage during spinning us‐ing retaining clips (available fromMiele). Otherwise there is the dangerof the machine moving and falling offthe plinth.

Transporting the washing ma‐chine to its installation siteTo manoeuvre the washing machine outof its packing case to its installationsite, hold it by the front feet as well asby the edge of the lid where it protrudesto the rear of the machine.

Ensure that the machine feet andthe floor are dry to prevent the ma‐chine from slipping during the spincycle.

Removing the transit bars

To remove the left and right covers

1. Pull on the attached stopper,

2. then use a screwdriver to release thecatches at the top and bottom.

pull the transit bar out.

To avoid the risk of injury, theholes for the transit bars must becovered after the transit bars havebeen removed.

Plug the holes with the plastic capsas illustrated.

Secure the transit bars to the back ofthe washing machine. Make sure thetop catch is located above the holder.

The washing machine must notbe moved without the transit bars inplace. Store them as shown or keepthem in a safe place for future use.They must be re-fitted if the machineis to be moved again (e.g. whenmoving house).

Re-fitting the transit barsRe-fitting is carried out by reversing theprocedure.

Levelling the machineThe washing machine must stand per‐fectly level on all four feet to ensuresafe and proper operation.

Incorrect installation may increase elec‐tricity and water consumption and maycause the machine to move about.

Screwing out and adjusting the feet

The four adjustable screw feet are usedto level the machine. All four feet arescrewed in when the machine is deliv‐ered.

Using the spanner supplied turncounter nut 2 in a clockwise direc‐tion. Then turn counter nut 2 togetherwith foot 1 to unscrew.

Use a spirit level to check that thewashing machine is standing level.

Hold foot 1 securely with a pipewrench. Turn counter nut 2 again us‐ing the spanner supplied until it sitsfirmly up against the housing.

All four counternuts must befirmly up against the housing. Pleasealso check this for the feet which didnot need adjustment. Otherwisethere is a danger of the machinemoving about.

Building under a continuous work‐top/ in a kitchen run

Building under kits* must only be in‐stalled/dismantled by a suitablyqualified fitter in accordance with theinstructions supplied.

– A special building under kit* with acover plate to replace the machine lidis required. It must be fitted by a suit‐ably qualified fitter to ensure electri‐cal safety. N.B. If there is space topush the washing machine under theworktop without removing the lid, thebuilding under kit is not necessary.Otherwise it is essential.

– Connections for electricity, water anddrainage should be installed in sucha way that they remain accessiblewhen the machine is in its final posi‐tion.

Fitting instructions are supplied with theconversion kit.

Washer-dryer stack

The washing machine can be combinedwith a Miele tumble dryer in a washer-dryer stack. The appropriate "WTV"stacking kit* to match your dryer is re‐quired.

The water protection systemThe Miele water protection system pro‐tects all parts of the washing machinefrom water damage.

The system consists of three maincomponents:

– the inlet hose

– the electronic unit and drainage andoverflow protection

– the drain hose

Inlet hose

– Protection against bursting

The inlet hose is tested to withstandpressure of at least 7,000 kPa.

Electronic unit and washing machinehousing

– SumpAny leaking water is collected in asump in the base of the machine. Afloat switches off the water inletvalves, preventing any more waterfrom flowing into the machine andwater in the suds container is pum‐ped away.

– Overflow protectionThis prevents the washing machinetaking in too much water. If the waterlevel exceeds a certain level, thedrain pump switches in and pumpsthe excess water away.

Drain hose

The drain hose is protected by a venti‐lation system which prevents the wash‐ing machine from being emptied com‐pletely.

Connection to the water sup‐plyThe washing machine should be con‐nected to a mains water supply in ac‐cordance with current local and nation‐al safety regulations. The German au‐thorities do not require it to have a non-return valve as the washing machinehas been designed to comply with DINregulations.

The machine is designed to operatewith a flow pressure of between 100and 1,000 kPa. If it is higher than 1,000kPa it is essential to fit a pressure re‐ducing valve.

Connection to the mains water supplyshould incorporate a mains stopcockwith 3/4" threaded union. The stopcockshould be fitted by a qualified plumber.

The connection point is subjectto mains water pressure. Turn on thestopcock slowly and check for leaks.Correct the position of the washerand union if appropriate.

The washing machine is not suitablefor connection to a hot water supply.

Maintenance

Only use a genuine Miele hose shouldyou ever need a replacement or exten‐sion. These are tested to withstandpressure of at least 7,000 kPa.

In order to protect the water inletvalve, the two dirt filters (one in theopen end of the inlet hose, the otherin the inlet point in the machine)must not be removed.

Extension hose

Longer hoses 2.5 or 4.0 m in length areavailable from your Miele Dealer orMiele as optional extras.

Connection to the drainagesystemThe machine drains via a drain pumpwith a delivery head of 1 metre*. Thedrain hose must not be kinked as thisrestricts drainage. The swivel elbow atthe end of the hose can be turned in ei‐ther direction, or can be detached if re‐quired, with a sharp twist and pull.If required, the drain hose can be exten‐ded to a length of 5 m. The necessaryparts can be purchased from your MieleDealer or Miele.

* For a delivery head of more than 1 m(up to a max. of 1.8 m) a replacementdrain pump will need to be fitted.Please contact Miele or your MieleDealer for advice. If necessary, thedrain hose can be extended to a lengthof 2.5 m. The necessary parts can bepurchased from your Miele Dealer orMiele.

Drain hose connection:

1. Direct into a sink or basin.

Please note the following:

– Hook the hose over the edge andsecure.

– Make sure that the water can drainaway freely without hindrance.Otherwise there is a risk of wateroverflowing or of some of thedrained water being sucked backinto the machine.

2. Connected securely to a plastic drainpipe with a rubber nipple. There is noneed to use a non-return valve.

Electrical connection U.K.All electrical work should be carried outby a suitably qualified and competentperson, in strict accordance with cur‐rent national and local safety regula‐tions (BS 7671 in the UK).

Ensure power is not supplied to the ap‐pliance until after installation work hasbeen carried out.

The appliance is supplied with a mainscable with moulded plug ready for con‐nection to a 230-240V mains supply.

Please ensure the connection data quo‐ted on the data plate match the house‐hold mains supply.

Connection should be made via a suita‐ble switched socket which is easily ac‐cessible after installation.

For extra safety it is advisable to protectthe machine with a suitable residualcurrent device (RCD). Contact a quali‐fied electrician for advice.

Do not connect via an extension lead.Extension leads do not guarantee therequired safety of the appliance (e.g.danger of overheating).

Non-rewireable plugs BS 1363

The fuse cover must be refitted whenchanging the fuse, and if the fuse coveris lost, the plug must not be used untila suitable replacement is obtained. Thecolour of the correct replacement coveris that of the coloured insert in the baseof the plug, or the colour that is em‐bossed in words on the base of theplug (as applicable to the design ofplug fitted).

Replacement fuses should be ASTA ap‐proved to BS 1362 and have the cor‐rect rating. Replacement fuses and fusecovers may be purchased from your lo‐cal electrical supplier.

You can use the settings menu to alterthe machine's electronics to suitchanging requirements.

Settings can be altered at any time.

Opening the Settings menu

Before you begin, ensure that:

– The washing machine is switched on.

– The standard display is showing.

Language

You are now in the Settings menu.

Selecting a setting

Touch the or sensor until thesetting you want appears in the dis‐play.

– The sensor scrolls down the list.

– The sensor scrolls up the list.

Touch the OK sensor to select thesetting displayed.

Changing a setting

Touching the sensor will call up thedifferent options for the setting.

The option which is selected will havea tick next to it.

When the option you want shows inthe display touch the OK sensor toactivate it.

Exiting a setting

Touch the or sensor repeatedlyuntil Back appears in the display.


Tip: After a while the display will revertautomatically to the standard display.

Language

The display can be set to appear inone of several different languages.

The flag after the word Languageacts as a guide to prevent a languagewhich will not be understood from be‐ing set.

The selected language will be stored inmemory.

Detergent/amount

For specifying the type of detergentpresent in the automatic detergentdispensing containers.

See "TwinDos" for more information.

Degree of soiling

You can select the default setting forthe degree of soiling or switch off thedegree of soiling query.

Options

– Default settingYou can choose between the Light,Normal or Heavy degree of soilingsettings.Factory default setting: Normal.

– QueryYou can switch the degree of soilingquery on or off. Factory default setting: On

Buzzer volume

You can select one of seven differentsettings for the buzzer volume.

The settings are represented by a barchart. At the lowest setting, the buzzeris switched off.

Keypad tone

Each touch of a sensor or press of abutton is confirmed with an audibletone.

Factory default setting: the keypad toneis switched off.

Total consumption

In this setting you can check thesaved energy and water consumptionvalues.

Options

– DisplayShows the sum of the energy and thesum of the water used by the previ‐ous programmes.

– Reset functionThe energy consumption and waterconsumption totals are reset to zero.

Code

The code prevents the washing ma‐chine being used without your knowl‐edge.

Options

– ActivateThe code is 125 and can be activa‐ted.When the code has been activated,you have to enter the code afterswitching the washing machine on.Otherwise the washing machine can‐not be operated.

– DeactivateFor using the washing machine with‐out entering the code. This only ap‐pears if the code has been activatedpreviously.

– ChangeYou can enter a code of your own.

Important. Make a note of your newcode. If you forget the code, thewashing machine will need to be un‐locked by Miele Service.

Temperature unit

The temperature can be displayed asdegrees Celsius (°C) or Fahrenheit (°F).

Factory default setting: Celsius (°C).

Display brightness

There are seven different displaybrightness settings.

The brightness changes as soon as youselect a different setting.

Dark display

To save energy, the display will go outand the Start/Stop button will flashslowly.

Options

– OnThe display will go out after 10 mi‐nutes.

– On (not in current programme)The display will remain on while theprogramme is running but will go out10 minutes after the end of the pro‐gramme.

– OffThe display will remain on.

Factory default setting: the On (not incurrent programme) option is selected.

Machine switch-off

The washing machine will switch offautomatically after the end of the pro‐gramme/anti-crease phase or afterbeing switched on if no further selec‐tion is made.

Options

– 15 minutes (Factory default setting)The washing machine will switch it‐self off after 15 minutes.

– 20 minutesThe washing machine will switch it‐self off after 20 minutes.

– 30 minutesThe washing machine will switch it‐self off after 30 minutes.

Memory

The washing machine will save thesettings (temperature, spin speed andsome of the options) which have beenselected for a programme after theprogramme has started.

When this programme is chosen again,these saved settings will appear in thedisplay.

Factory default setting: the Memoryfunction is switched off.

Pre-wash Cottons

If you require a longer pre-wash youcan extend the Cottons programme'sstandard pre-wash time of 25 minutes

Soak duration

You can set a duration for the soakprocess of between 30 minutes and 5hours.

You can select the duration in 30 mi‐nute increments. When the Soak optionis selected the laundry will be soakedfor the duration selected.

Gentle action

Activating gentle action reduces thedrum action and is suitable for wash‐ing slightly soiled items more gently.

Gentle action can be activated for theCottons and Minimum iron pro‐grammes.

Factory default setting: Gentle action isswitched off.

Reduce temp.

The boiling point for water is lower ataltitudes of more than 1000 m abovesea level. In order to avoid water boil‐ing, the maximum temperature is re‐duced to 80°C even when a highertemperature is selected.

Factory default setting: the reduce tem‐perature setting is switched off.

Water plus

You can increase the set amount ofwater in the wash programmes.

Options

– Water +The water level is increased in thewash and rinse stages.

– Extra rinseAn extra rinse is carried out.

– Water + and Extra rinseThe water level is increased in thewash and rinse stages and an extrarinse is carried out.

The water level can be increased in 4stages by activating the Water plusoption.

Maximum rinse level

The water level in the rinse cycle canbe permanently set to the highest val‐ue.

This function is useful for allergy suffer‐ers as it achieves an excellent rinse re‐sult. Water consumption will increase.

Factory default setting: the maximumrinse level setting is switched off.

Suds cooling

When this is activated, additional wa‐ter flows into the drum at the end ofthe main wash to cool the suds down.Hot suds can damage plastic drainagepipes.

Suds cooling takes place when a tem‐perature of 70°C or higher is selectedfor the Cottons programme.

Suds cooling should be activated:

– to prevent the danger of scalding ifthe drain hose is hooked over theedge of a sink or basin.

– where drainage pipes do not complywith DIN 1986.

Factory default setting: Suds cooling isswitched off.

Anti-crease

The anti-crease function helps preventcreasing if laundry is not going to beremoved immediately after the end ofthe programme.

The drum continues to turn at intervalsfor up to 30 minutes at the end of theprogramme. The door can be opened atany time.

Factory default setting: anti-crease isswitched on.
