Operating Functions

The condition and process of cooling

• If the indoor ambient temperature is equal to or greater than the room set temperature, COOL mode will act, the compressor and outdoor fan will run, and the indoor fan will run at the set speed .

• If the indoor ambient temperature is equal to or lower than 2°F below the room set temperature, the compressor will stop, the outdoor fan will delay 30 seconds to stop, and the indoor fan will run at the set speed .

• If the indoor ambient temperature is lower than the room set temperature, yet higher than 2°F below the room set temperature, the unit will keep running in the previous mode.

In this mode, the reversal valve will not be powered on and the temperature setting range is 61°F ~ 86°F.

The unit will adjust the running frequency of the compressor automatically according to the change of ambient temperature.

Anti-freezing protection

1) Under cooling or dehumidify mode, if T indoor tube senor has detect a temperature that is below 32 °F continuously for 3 minutes, the unit will go into freeze protection mode and shut down. Once the unit shut down because of freeze protection, the unit will not restart until T indoor tube sensor is above 42.8 °F. The compressor has to wait at least 3 minutes to restart after shutting down due to freeze protection.

2) Under cooling or dehumidify mode, if T indoor

tube senor has detected a temperature that is below 42.8 °F but higher than 32 °F, the compressor may decrease its speed to prevent the temperature to go below 32 °F.

3) If the unit has been shut down six times because

of the freeze protection, it will not restart again automatically. Instead, user or service technician needs to completely power off the unit before he/she can try to restart the unit manually. But, once the compressor runs continuously for more than 10 minutes normally (no freeze protection detected), the number of freeze protections will be cleared to zero.

The condition and process of drying

• If the indoor ambient temperature is greater than the room set temperature, DRY mode will act, the indoor fan, outdoor fan and compressor will run, and indoor fan will run at low speed.

• If the indoor ambient temperature is lower than the room set temperature, yet higher than 2°F below the room set temperature, the unit will keep running in the original mode.

• If the room ambient temperature is lower than 2°F below the room set temperature, the compressor will stop running, the outdoor fan will delay 30 seconds to stop and the indoor fan will run at low speed.

In this mode, the reversal valve will not be powered on and the temperature setting range is 61°F ~ 86°F.

The unit will adjust the running frequency of the compressor automatically according to the change of ambient temperature.

The condition and process of heating

• If the indoor ambient temperature is equal to or less than 2°F above room set temperature, HEAT mode will act, the compressor, outdoor fan and 4-way valve will run simultaneously, and the indoor fan will delay up to 2 minutes before running.

• If the indoor ambient temperature is lower than 9°F above room set temperature, yet higher than 2°F above room set temperature, the unit will keep running in the original mode.

• If the indoor ambient temperature is greater than 9°F above room set temperature, the compressor will stop, the outdoor fan will delay 30 seconds then stop, and the indoor fan will blow for 60 seconds at the original speed and then stop.

In this mode, the temperature setting range is 61°F ~ 86°F.

The air conditioner will adjust the running frequency of the compressor automatically according to the change of ambient temperature.

When the unit is turned off in HEAT mode, or switched to another mode, the 4-way valve will be powered off 2 minutes after the compressor stops.

The condition and process of defrosting

What parameters have been used in the defrost algorithm?

There are two temperatures that basically determine if the system goes into defrost mode or not, and they are Toutdoor ambient and Toutdoor tube.

One intermediate parameter, Tcompensation, has also been created and involved in the calculation. Tcompensation can be determined by Toutdoor tube,

1) If Toutdoor tube > 35.6 °F, Tcompensation = 0°F 2) If Toutdoor tube ≤ 35.6 °F, Tcompensation = 5.4°F

Page 11: Operating Functions

Operating Functions

When will the system go into defrost mode?

When the system continuously runs in heating mode for more than 45 minutes or the compressor accumulated run time is more than 90 minutes, the unit will switch to defrost mode under any of the following conditions,

1) Toutdoor ambient ≥ 41 °F, Toutdoor tube ≤ 28.4 °F2) 28.4 °F > Toutdoor ambient < 41 °F, Toutdoor tube ≤ 21.2 °F3) 23 °F ≤ Toutdoor ambient < 28.4 °F, Toutdoor tube ≤ 17.6 °F4) 14 °F ≤ Toutdoor ambient < 23 °F, Toutdoor tube ≤ Toutdoor ambient - 5.4 + Tcompensation 5) Toutdoor ambient < 14 °F, Toutdoor tube ≤ Toutdoor ambient - 5.4 + Tcompensation

Other than these 5 conditions, the system could also switch to defrost mode under the following condition,

6) Toutdoor ambient ≥ 41 °F, compressor has more than 180 minutes accumulated run time, and Toutdoor tube sensor continuously report the temperature is < 32°F for more than 1 minute.

Note: Compressor accumulated run time can be cleared to 0 only under the following conditions.

• System finished a defrost cycle. • System switched to cooling mode

Compressor accumulated run time will NOT be cleared for any other conditions including

• System stops running when reaching the set indoor temperature• System stops running for any protection• System switches to fan mode

Operating Functions

When will the system stop defrost mode?

The system will stop defrost cycle if ANY of the following conditions are satisfied

1) Toutdoor tube ≥ 50 °F2) Defrost cycle reaches maximum defrost set time, typically this value is around 7 - 10 minutes and it varies

model by model

Operating Functions

How does each component respond in sequence during a defrost cycle?

Once the system determines to run a defrost cycle, first the indoor fan stop running and subsequently the compressor reduces the speed and stops within a minute. The outdoor fan will continue to run for another minute, and then stop. Fifteen seconds later, the switch over valve will switch the position from heating to defrost (or cooling). The compressor starts up again and increases into a relatively high speed to defrost.

Once the system determine to exit a defrost cycle, the compressor decreases the speed and stops within a minute. A few seconds later, the switch over valve will switch the position from defrost (or cooling) to heating. After one minute, the compressor will operate again, and subsequently the outdoor fan and indoor fan will return to normal and run in heating mode.

Operating Functions

The Multi-Split Heat Pump system has special protection modes that may be entered should the inverter board detect abnormal system operation. The special protection functions descriptions are as follows:

Multi Zone Special Functions

Introduction

Mode Conflict is an indication that a wall unit is calling for a different mode of operation than the first unit that called. For example, the first unit that called for comfort operation indicated a cooling mode need and the second unit indicated a heating mode need.

System Response

The system will satisfy the first unit call before switching modes to satisfy the conflicting call.

If the unit is in Fan Mode and a Heat Mode call is initiated, the Heat Mode call will satisfied immediately.

Mode Conflict

The temperature of the liquid leaving the outdoor coil is monitored to ensure it is not too hot. Causes include dirty outdoor coil, high heat load on system, hot outdoor air temperature.

Response

If the outdoor coil temperature gets too hot, the compressor frequency is reduced. If the temperature of the outdoor coil is too low, the compressor frequency is increased.

Overload Protection Function

Page 34: Operating Functions

Operating Functions

The compressor discharge line temperature is monitored to ensure the compressor hot gas temperature is at optimum operating range. If the temperature of the discharge line gets either too hot or cool, the system efficiency and reliability are affected.

Response

When the discharge line is too hot, the compressor frequency is reduced. If the line gets too cool, the compressor frequency is increased.

If the line is too hot, the compressor will shut off momentarily. If this happens 6 times the outdoor unit will lock out and power will have to be restored. If at any time, the compressor can run for a period of 7 minutes without stopping, the event timer is reset to 0 and another count begins.

Multi Zone Special Functions

Compressor Discharge Temperature

The system is protected against high refrigerant pressure. Causes include over charging, dirty outdoor coil, outdoor fan motor problems.

Response

If the system shuts off on high pressure protection, the system will need to be re-powered before it will restart.

Compressor High Pressure Protection

Page 35: Operating Functions

Operating Functions

42 size models have a low pressure switch. The switch protects the system against low operating pressures that can be due to undercharging, low heat loading or restrictions.

Response

When the low pressure switch opens the system will shut down. If the switch recluses, the system will operate. If the low pressure switch opens twice in one hour, the system will lock out and power will need to be shut off and then restored for operation to occur.

Multi Zone Special Functions

Compressor Low Pressure Protection

This error indicates the high temperature overload limit on the compressor has opened. Causes include lack of refrigerant, restrictions, high heat loading.

Response

The system will shut the compressor off. If the compressor temperature cools within 3 minutes, the system will automatically resume operation. If the system experiences 6 of these events, the system will lock out and will need to be re-powered to run. If at any time prior to the 6 events, the compressor runs for at least 30 minutes, the timer is automatically reset to 0.
