OVI-RELATED CRASHES In 2018, 13,364 OVI-related1 crashes occurred on Ohio roadways resulting in 402 deaths and 7,811
injuries. This represents a 8% decrease in crashes from 2017, although the number of fatalities stayedessentially unchanged. OVI-related crashes accounted for 37% of all fatal crashes in 2018. Further,almost one in three OVI crashes involved drugged driving (4,126) either alone or in addition to alcohol.
In 2018, drivers aged 21-39 were at-fault in 54% of OVI-related crashes in Ohio while underage drivers(15-20) were at-fault in another 5%. In 67% of OVI-related crashes, the driver of the at-fault vehicle wasa male.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 10,874 people were killednationwide in alcohol-related crashes in 2017,2 about one death every 48 minutes. In 68% of alcohol-impaired driving fatalities, at least one driver involved had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) at orabove 0.15 g/dL, although every state makes it illegal to drive with a BAC at or above 0.08 g/dL.
OSHP OVI CITATIONS In 2018, OSHP troopers issued 26,614 citations for OVI. Troopers have written an average of 25,732
OVI citations per year over the last 5 years (2014-2018). In 2018, among the OVI arrests, OSHP troopers cited 1,785 people suspected of being under the
influence of marijuana. Additionally, 2,853 citations were written for suspected impairment by anotherdrug and 1,228 suspected of being under the influence of marijuana and another drug.
