Mission Statement

New Alternatives for Children (NAC) was founded on the belief that allchildren, including those who are chronically ill or physically challenged, have the right to live in safe, loving and permanent family homes. NAC’s mission is to provide innovative, high quality services in supportof birth, foster, and adoptive families who are caring for children withspecial medical needs at home. Working primarily with children whosebirth families live in poverty, NAC seeks to enable them to remain in, or return to, their homes whenever possible, or to be adopted by loving families when necessary. NAC’s innovative services ensure thatthe physical, social, educational, recreational, health care, and mentalhealth needs of medically fragile children are met. By supporting families, NAC prevents the institutionalization of children, precludeslengthy stays in foster care, and facilitates the timely discharge of children from hospitals where they may have lived well beyond medicalneed. NAC builds on family strengths, provides opportunities, and assistsall family members in reaching for and realizing their dreams.

Honors and Achievements

New Alternatives for Children’s Post Legal Adoption Network (PLAN)was honored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services(HHS) with the 2008 Adoption Excellence Award in the category Supportfor Adoptive Families. NAC was recognized for the extraordinarycontributions it has made in providing adoption and other permanencyoutcomes for children in foster care. The agency was one of just 20organizations nationally to receive an HHS Adoption Excellence Award.

NAC WINSNational Honor with an

Adoption Excellence Award

“NAC has maintained its standing as the preeminent healthcare and socialservice agency for children with special medical needs. The PLAN programhas demonstrated success at keeping families together and away from further involvement with the child welfare system.”

New Programs and Services

In February 2008, NAC was officially approved to become a Bridges toHealth (B2H) healthcare integration agency. NAC is one of only five initial agencies in New York City to be designated a B2H program site by the State of New York. B2H is a Medicaid Waiver foster care add-on program for children who are medically fragile, have a developmentaldisability or who are seriously emotionally disturbed. Services include:health care integration, intense in-home supports and services, supportedemployment, and crisis avoidance and management.

The Post Legal Adoption Network (PLAN) at NAC initiated the AdoptMentmentoring program. The program, which was started by the organization“Changing the World One Child at a Time” (CTWOCAT), is designed tomatch a teen who has been adopted or who is working toward adoptionwith an adult mentor who was also adopted. The focus of AdoptMent is tohelp the teens explore their feelings about adoption in a safe environmentwith mentors who have had similar experiences and feelings related toadoption, to raise the self-esteem of members and to give them positiveexperiences in the community.

NAC initiated a regular series of Health Fairs as part of our efforts to helpNAC children and families improve their nutrition. The Fairs supply fresh, frozen and canned foods to NAC families as well as share healthy recipesand nutritional information.

NAC strengthened its One Step Forward youth development program with the support of New Yorkers For Children (NY4C) and the BodmanFoundation. One Step Forward focuses on the needs of the growing number of teens at NAC. Special youth development services are providedto ensure that these teens are prepared for education, employment, andgreater independence as they move toward adulthood.

Highlights

NAC was honored to be chosen by the nycTIES as a recipient of their2008 fundraising efforts. The organization of young professionals hasbeen an invaluable asset and advocate for NAC. In addition to raising$20,000 for NAC through several fundraisers throughout the year, thegroup has enthusiastically volunteered their time to help make a differ-ence in NAC children’s lives. nycTIES participated in the NAC Olympicsand Holiday Party as well as volunteered at several smaller eventsthroughout the year. Two nycTIES members joined NAC’s mentoring program and are wonderful role models for our youth. The group consistently went above and beyond in their efforts to help the agency. One volunteer arranged a free trip to the Sports Museum of Americafor NAC children and others secured holiday gift donations. We arepleased to announce that our partnership will continue into the next year.

Have you ever wishedyou had someone supportive to talk to,or ever needed a rolemodel to show how toreach your goals?

These are some of the manythings that a good mentor cando. A mentor is an adult whogives you support and has a positive impact on your life.

I connected with Danny rightaway. Danny and I talked aboutschool, life at home, movies, music, television, even politics.During our talks, he’ll ask meabout school and I’ll tell himwhere I’m at in terms of graduation or college. We onlytalk about personal things, likearguments with my mother orfights with my brother, if I bringit up. I feel comfortable tellinghim if I’m angry or depressed.

I know a lot of people say a mentor is most like a parent, but to me Danny’s more like abrother. He’s there when I needhim and he’s easy to talk to.

Highlights (continued)

The Taproot Foundation awarded NAC a Service Grant to redevelop the agency’s website. NAC staff have been collaborating with a ten personteam of very energetic volunteers who bring along their extensive professional experience in web and graphic design, programming, mar-keting and copywriting. The new NAC website will launch in Summer 2009.

NAC initiated its first LITERACY FOR ALL book fair in June. Over 100NAC children of all ages attended and received new books donated byScholastic, Inc. and the ASPCA. NAC’s Parent Advisory Committee helpedto organize the LITERACY FOR ALL day, which included lunch donated byMcDonald’s Restaurant and a special appearance by Coco the Love Dog.

The generosity of in-kind donations from new and old NAC friends alikewas unparalleled in 2008. Gatorade, PepsiCo and Ben & Jerry’s donatedproducts to the NAC Kids Olympics; the Knit Wits knitted new sweaters, hats and scarves for NAC children; Kids In Distressed Situations (K.I.D.S)donated children’s clothing, backpacks and school supplies; the TigerFoundation donated Halloween Candy; new pajamas and bedtime bookswere donated by the Pajama Project; the Robin Hood Foundation donated Thanksgiving dinners and warm blankets for NAC families; andPayless Shoe Source gift cards were donated to NAC children by NY4C.These are just a few examples of how a little generosity can go a longway toward helping children and families who are living in poverty.

NAC held its 3rd Annual NAC Kids Olympics on June 21 at RiverbankState Park. Over 500 NAC children of all abilities and ages participatedin the games. The finale was a run down “Olympians’ Alley” where eachchild received their Gold medal. We are very grateful to the many individuals who supported NAC’s Kids Olympics as well as NewsCorporation, HGI Foundation, and Société Générale for underwritingthis event.

NAC celebrated the holidays with more than 1,000 individuals, includingmedically fragile children and their families on December 13 at its Annual Holiday Party at the Jacob Javits Center. Some 150 communityand corporate volunteers helped to make the festivities of the day possible. Holiday gifts for all the children and families were donated by The Today Show Gift Drive, NYCares Winter Wishes Program,Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies, Bertelsmann Inc., Disney/ESPN, the Estée Lauder Companies, K.I.D.S., Zoo York, Vineyard Vines,Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP & Affiliates, Concept OneAccessories, and Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP. NAC is grateful toacknowledge its Parent Advisory Committee’s efforts in raising nearly$1,000 in support of the party.

During the holiday season, several companies found another way to giveback to their community. Richards, Kibbe and Orbe LLP and CliffordChance LLP included NAC as their charity of choice in their HolidayCards. Both firms used artwork created by NAC children as the designof their Holiday e-cards and presented NAC with a generous contribution.
