DIRECTOR'S NOTESGood evening and welcome to our concert!
We will open our concert with several works by Eric Whitacre, a Grammy-winning American composer, conductor, and speaker, known for his choral, orchestral and wind ensemble music. His concert music has been performed throughout the world by millions of amateur and professional musicians alike, while his ground-breaking Virtual Choirs have united singers from over 110 different countries.
The second half of the concert features music from movies. Some of the selections will be easily recognized by most of you, but others may not be. They are songs that were featured in films over the last several decades and, though they are not often heard anymore, they are beautiful pieces of music. King of Kings is from the 1961 Biblical epic film of the same name. The movie is a dramatization of the story of Jesus Christ from his birth and ministry to his crucifixion and resurrection. The theme song from the movie Exodus is from the 1960 epic film about the founding of the modern State of Israel. Produced and directed by Otto Preminger, the film was based on the 1958 novel Exodus by Leon Uris. Dry Your Tears, Afrika is from the movie Amistad, a 1997 historical film directed by Steven Spielberg and based on the true story of the 1839 mutiny aboard the slave ship La Amistad, during which Mende tribesmen abducted for the slave trade managed to gain control of their captors’ ship off the coast of Cuba, and the international legal battle that followed their capture by a U.S. revenue cutter. As Time Goes By was written by Herman Hupfeld in 1931. It became famous in 1942 when part of it was sung by the character Sam (Dooley Wilson) in the movie Casablanca.
We hope you enjoy our concert. Thank you for coming.

2017 DON BARROWS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP WINNER
Cecilia Isabelle LewisThe Federal Way Chorale is pleased to announce Ms. Cecilia Isabelle Lewis as the recipient of the 2017 Federal Way Chorale “Don Barrows Memorial” Scholarship. Ms. Lewis will receive $2,000 toward her college tuition.
Ms. Lewis is a graduating senior at Bellarmine Preparatory School and has spent most of her academic life in vocal performance, band and musical theater. She credits her middle school band director as her inspiration, bringing the written ink on the page to life. Her most influential experience is the award-winning performance of her singing role of Jo March in Bellarmine’s production of Little Women. Giving back to the community is demonstrated by her involvement in such programs as Tacoma Rescue Mission. She is working her way to college through employment at the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium and anticipates being accepted into Pacific Lutheran University. Ms. Lewis loves listening to classical music and remembers her mother’s saying, “Classical music makes you smarter.” When asked for her advice for the youth today, her response is simply “ ... Someone’s gotta do it!”

Lyric Translations
“Dry Your Tears, Afrika” (from the 1997 movie Amistad)
Original poem by Bernard Binlin Dadie (translated from French)
Dry your tears, Africa!
Your children are returning to you in the storm and the tempest of unsuccessful journeys, on the ripples of the wave and the babble of the breeze, on the gold of the levants, the purple of the sunsets, the tops of proud mountains and of the savannas watered with light.
They return to you in the storm and the tempest of unsuccessful journeys.
Dry your tears, Africa
Having drunk at all fountains of misfortune and glory, our senses have opened to the splendor of your beauty, to the enchantment of your waters, to the clarity of your sky, to the caress of your sun, and to the charm of your green, beaded with dew.
Dry your tears, Africa!
Your children come back to you, hands full of toys and heart full of love
They come back to clothe you with their dreams and hopes.
“Frozen Medley” (from Disney’s 2013 movie Frozen)
