Council has requested the trial of a pesticide free park within the City of Nedlands.

Masons Gardens in dalkeith has been identifi ed as a suitable location for this 24 month trial and this began in december 2011.

as part of the trial, there will be no pesticides used in Masons Gardens over this period.

This will include, but is not limited to, the application of herbicide and insecticide treatments.

information will be collected during the period of the trial and compiled for Council to consider in reviewing the policy. information to be collected will include cost implications, park usage and community feedback.

The City welcomes community feedback on the condition of the reserve over this period. should you have any comments, please forward these to the City at the following email or mailing address: [email protected] - City of Nedlands, Po Box 9, Nedlands Wa 6909.

dc cRuickshank MasTeRPlaNThe City of Nedlands has begun engaging the community in the master planning process for the re-development of the david Cruickshank Reserve in dalkeith.

Two workshops have already been held at dalkeith Nedlands Bowling Club. These workshops were attended by local residents, community groups and sporting groups in which they went through an ‘enquiry by design’ process in order to come up with some ideas for the future of the reserve.

Throughout the next fi ve months the City will be engaging and consulting the community further to ensure that their needs, ideas and concerns are refl ected in the plans. By the end of the process the City looks to have an agreed concept plan from which detailed construction drawings can be created for the reserve.

if you would like to be involved or for further information, please contact the City on 9273 3500 or email [email protected]

in april 2012, the City’s Parks department proposes to undertake the following projects:

• Stabilisation of the grassed embankment surrounding the Nedlands skate Park at Charles Court Reserve. This will involve the removal of turf, to be replaced with a rubber soft fall.

• Installation of bollards and mulch along a section of stephenson avenue, Mt Claremont, between Challenge stadium and Montgomery drive.

• Reticulation upgrades to Mossvale Gardens, Zamia Park, Campsie Park and Tresillian Centre.

NeW BUildiNG aCT The new building act will be implemented on the 2/4/2012.

The City’s rehabilitation of Masons Gardens ponds in 2011 earned a finalist award in the department of environment and Conservation’s Wa environment awards – Rivers, estuaries and Wetlands award. The turtles were suffering a bacterial skin infection. This was attributed to a number of factors, including a lack of suffi cient UV light

(as the turtles were not basking in the sun), poor water quality, and weakening of the skin from biting each other when competing for food.

Remedies included drying the ponds to kill feral Gambusia fi sh, removing noxious weeds, installing basking sites, introducing native fi sh and invertebrates as a natural food source, and treatment

of the turtles offsite for the skin infections.

if you are interested in assisting with the ongoing management of the ponds, enquire about joining the friends of Masons Gardens group by contacting the City’s sustainability offi cer on 9273 3500 or phuigens@nedlands. wa.gov.au

from the 28th april, residents of the City of Nedlands can purchase up to 80 plants per household for $1.50 each from apace Nursery in North

to apace from 28th april to 26th May to take advantage of this fantastic program. Call apace Nursery (9336 1262) for opening hours and species availability.

as part of the City’s commitment to reducing water use, the lawn at the front of the Nedlands library is being converted in to a Waterwise demonstration Garden.

By removing the lawn and installing native plants and mulch, the City will signifi cantly reduce water use in this area. other benefi ts include reducing the need for chemicals, increasing biodiversity, and encouraging birdsand butterfl ies.

This Waterwise garden hopes to also provide an educational opportunity, whereby visitors can learn about Waterwise gardening and native plants. Paths, interpretive signage and seating areas are also being installed, to invite visitors to enjoy this new Waterwise space. if you’d like information or advice about converting your own verge or gardens in to Waterwise landscapes, please contact the City’s sustainability offi cer on 9273 3500.
