1 Village centre, guided toursGuided tours every hour. Registration on site or via websiteArcheological finds show that the Plein and its surroundings were already inhabited since the 6th or 7th century. Most of its buildings have therefore great historical value. On the outside this is only partly visible, so a guided tour is highly recommended. Departure on the Plein.

2 Village church (Plein 3)The Dorpskerk has had a central position in the village since the Middle Ages. Remnants of the 11th century tuff church can be seen in the northern wall. In the following centuries the church was partly rebuilt and extended. In 1573, because of the threat of Spanish invasion, it was demolished bij the citizens of Leiden. After this episode the church was only partly restored. The impressive organ, erected by the well known Albert Anthoni Hinsz from Groningen dates from 1769.

3 Baljuwhuis’ gardens (Plein 1) Garden and stables free acces. The Baljuwhuis dates from 1742 and was commissioned by bailiff Joan van Gybelant, working for the lord of Wassenaar. Behind the house you will find a spacious garden with an 18th century winding wood, oaks along a path, beechhedges, a vegetable patch and an orchard. Close to the house there is a garden, a rare early design (1954) of garden architect Mien Ruys.

4 Shed (Gang 10)The origins of this oak shed is unknown. It has been part of the alley ‘Gang’ as far as people can remember. The Gang dates back to the Middle Ages and was an area of industry. Dealers in construction materials and contractors lived and worked here for example. Access to the Gang was narrowed to its current size when the Baljuwhuis was built in the 18th century.

5 Basement Just Haasnoot (Langstr. 29)

This building dates back to 1752, when the corn-chandler Cornelis Schoenmaker had it commissioned. Remains of older constructions were incorporated and the medieval cellar stayed in place. Since 1983 the house is owned by the Haasnoot family. The oldest part, the cellar with its brick alcoves, salt reservoirs, flagged floor and Delft blue tiles is worth the visit.

6 Corn-mill Windlust (Molenplein 10)

This is the place where traditionally villagers had their grain milled. The mill is still in use, thanks to commitment of volunteers. The lowest part of the current mill is from 1668. The mill itself is from 1705.

7 Miller’s house, Art Group Wassenaar (Molenplein 10a)

One part of the miller’s house is used by the Art Group Wassenaar. Since its establishment in 1976, the Art Group can boast of several

prominent members, such as Paul Schuitema, Paul Citroen en Piet Zwart. The miller’s house hosts a great variety of art shows throughout the year. They offer a stage to the active artist community in Wassenaar. See also under Activities.

8 St. Willibrordus church (Kerkstr. 77) In 1903 building began of the large cross-basilica in neo-gothic style. The architect was Nicolaes Molenaer. The elaborate interior, with leaded windows, pulpit and altar rail, was mainly produced from the sculptor F.M. Mengelberg’s workshop. This church, together with the rectory, the Warenar, the former boys school (now the Van Heeckerenhuis) and the headmaster’s residence across the street, form a unique group. All built around the same time, they are a reminder of Wassenaar’s flourishing catholic life in that period.

9 Meyland (Backershagenlaan 19)The grounds of Meyland belonged to the vast estate of Backershagen until 1911. The Rotterdam merchant, Frits Weise bought a large part, where he had two villas built, Meyland and De Wiltzangk. Meyland, which was built in english countryhouse style, dates from 1912. Weise was an active gardener and added a vegetable garden, greenhouse and an orchard to his property. Intended as an extension to the house, a geometrical garden was designed directly behind it, by landscape architect Dirk Tersteeg. Meyland is now the residence of the Indian ambassador.

10 Goede Herder church (Stoeplaan 4)In 1923 the parish ‘De Goede Herder’ was founded to accomodate the catholics living in the newly established villas in that area. The church was designed and built by the architects Leo van der Laan and his son Jan and was consecrated in 1932. The design is inspired by the Byzantine and early Christian basilica form. The church is part of an entire complex of buildings, under which a school, the house for the churchwarden and a cemetery.

11 Kieviet church (Oranjelaan 2)Mutters drew the plan for the church in 1923. Building was finished one year later. This hall-church is executed in a traditional-artisan style. The decorative masonry shows the influence of the Amsterdam School. In 1958 the church was drastically renovated under supervision of the architect Chris Nielsen. The table, pulpit and font are from the same period. They are produced by Nico Onkenhout.

12 Wilhelmina public garden (Wilhelminaplein)

Guided tours. Registration on siteThe Wilhelmina public garden is situated at the heart of De Kieviet. It was realised in 1923, but reached its current form in 1931, when the architectural gardenstyle was fashionable. Parts of the structure and details have been restored At the initiative of the residents a fruit and veg picking garden has already materialised.

13 Bunker complex Rijksdorp (Van der Doeslaan 3)

Acces via van der Doeslaan 3. Tours see acitivities.Hidden between the villas in the Wassenaar district of Rijksdorp is a bunker complex. Under the foliage of the majestic oaks, beeches and chestnuts, the bunkers are hardly visible from the air. This was a reason for the German occupiers to build a command post here in 1942. The infantrymen who supported the coastal defense line Atlantic Wall were housed in the meter-thick structures.

After the Second World War, the bunkers were taken into use by the Dutch army, which esta-

blished a communication center here. In the context of NATO, air force communication was set up here during the Cold War. This at a time when telex and coded telephone lines were the ways to keep in touch

14 Manor Ruijgrok (Oostdorperweg 201)

The Oostdorperweg is situated on an ancient dune and has been there for centuries. The bulbfields west of this road also belong to Wassenaar’s heritage. It is here where you can find Ruijgrok’s manor. It is first mentioned in 1581, but is far older. The house shows many traces of its rich history. Special feature is the cellar, dating from the early 16th century, with a well and lampniches. .

15 Manor Johanneshoeve (Oostdorperweg 208)

This farmhouse was built around 1630, but has undergone a major renovation after a devastating fire in 1932. In the fire, the cellar, the upstairs room and part of the front house with the spiral staircase to the first floor have been preserved. The upstairs room in particular still has beautiful details from the first half of the 17th century: an oak paneling with panel door and a bedstead from the same time. The yard is still quite authentic on the Oostdorperweg side; especially on the north side is a piece of land with many old trees and traditional stinse plants. The upper room, hall and basement are accessible via the mourning and wedding door.

16 Community center Deijleroord (Hofcampweg 3)

Please note: open from 11 am to 2 pmIn 1951 the Church Guardianship of the Dutch German Reformed Congregation gave architect J.W. Block the assignment to design a neighborhood building. This building in Traditionalist architectural style is typical of the post-war reconstruction period. It has a sober appearance but has been carefully built with a wealth of details. Also walk into the neighborhood garden “Deijlerhof”. Volunteers have laid out this garden themselves and wish you a warm welcome.

17 Villa Maarheeze (Rijksstraatweg 675)

Not freely accessible. Lecture (Dutch only). See Activities. Limited AvailabilityAlthough Villa Maarheeze is mostly known for housing Dutch intelligence services, it was originally intended for private habitation. In 1914 G.A. van Putten bought a part of the estate Oud Clingendael and commissioned the young architect Co Brandes for the design of the house. Brandes collaborated with the

garden architect Dirk Tersteeg. Brandes considered house and garden to be one, which can clearly be seen here. The house is lifted above the surrounding gardens. They are connected by a retaining wall, stairs and a terrace with a pond.

18 WaalsdorpervlakteOngoing tours starting at the monument, registration on site. Parking next to the sportsgrounds at the Buurtweg or the parking area next to the N440 ( both ca. 1 km) During the Second World War this area was used by the Nazis for torture and execution of people on deathrow. More than 250 resistors were shot here. Directly after the war those who survived decided on a monument for the fallen. For this they used wooden posts that were found in the area and on which the tortured men were bound for execution. Four wooden crosses (now bronze) were produced. In 1959 the bourdon clock was added to the site and is since then an essential part of the commemoration service.

19 Prince Frederiks park route See activities and toursPrince Frederick of the Netherlands built a ring road in the 19th century along his nine estates in Wassenaar and Voorschoten. With this park route he was able to inspect his property and enjoy the landscape diversity, the special views. He also took his guests along the route. There was undoubtedly a lot of walking around the Paauw and Backershagen park around his home, De Paauw. His possessions did not stay together after his death. The estates were sold in parts between 1890 and 1912. As a result, part of the route is no longer recognizable as such. Large parts of the route are still present. Parts of the route can be explored by coach or on foot with a guide.

Guided tours Admission only through registration via website. Limited availability.

20 Klein Haesebroek (Schouwweg 106) Strategically situated at the corner of the Stoeplaan and the Schouwweg, Klein Haesebroek was the first of the grand villas to be built in the new villa park Groot Haesebroek in 1910. It was designed by the architectural firm Hoek & Wouters. Wouters moved into the villa, with the purpose of using it as a showpiece for potential residents in the neighbourhood. With its English country style, combined with an old-Dutch interior it was an immediate hit with the prospective new owners. It is now the residence of the Peruvian ambassador.

21 Baljuwhuis (Plein 1)The middle section of this stately home (see nr 3) is adorned with a sculptured and painted coat of arms of Johan Hendrik, count van Wassenaer van Obdam. The inside is almost entirely in its original state. The owner will be pleased to elaborate on its rich history during the guided tour.
