OPEN HEMA WOLF 2017 – 1st Trial

Presentation This 1st Trial is part of the OPEN HEMA WOLF.

The Open HEMA Wolf is a ludic tournament which goal is to allow the participants to try the

basics of many disciplines while leaving their comfort zone.

The trials are made so that all participants practice technics and practices from historical

sources, combined with sport exercises.

The participants will have to be able to quickly get the technics and exercises they may not

be used to practice, in a context combining time limit, effort, rhythm and precision.

Participation Only registered people can participate

The registration is opened until Sunday 12 November 2017 at 10pm (France time).

Registration must be made here.

People who did not registered can, of course, do the trials, but their performance cannot be

communicated to the organizers for the final ranking.

This trial uses two different disciplines with a precise source for each, which you can

❖ The dagger according to FIORI DE LIBERI: translated from Latin to French by Paul

GETTY.

Results

To make the grading easier during the trial, an evaluation sheet to print will be available.

However, the results will have to be reported online to be taken in account for the raking.

Ranking The overall ranking and the one for this trial only will be communicated on Thursday 16

November 2017.

Difficulty For each exercise, the participants can choose the level of difficulty among those two:

❖ RX: maximum difficulty.

❖ SQUALED: minimum difficulty.

Once the difficulty level chosen for an exercise, the participant cannot change it during the

trial.

Trial This first trial is composed of two different parts, which must be made one right after the

other, as described below.

Total duration : 10 minutes.

First part

EMOM – 6' Every Minute On Minute

The first part lasts 6 minutes. It is composed of an alternation of 3 series of M1 exercise and

3 series of M2 exercise.

The participant must perform during the odd minutes (1, 3 & 5) the M1 exercise, and during

the even minutes (2, 4 & 6) the M2 exercise. The M1 and M2 exercises are described below.

The participant has precisely one minute to make a M1 or M2 exercise.

If the participant finishes the exercises before the end of the minute, the remaining time is

recuperation time.

If the participant does not finish the exercise within one minute, he immediately moves to

the exercise of the new minute.

❖ M1 – Perform twice Meyer’s Diagram completely, with a thrust in the center at the

end of each series of hits at the 4 openings (see the following page)

♦ RX : the moves are made with the false edge

♦ SCALED : the moves are made with the true edge

❖ M2 – Perform a serie of Burpees

♦ RX : 10 Burpees.

♦ SCALED : 6 Burpees.

MEYER’s Diagram

Meyer’s diagram is a tool used to work on the chaining of hits.

It is composed of 4 series of hits, which direction and order are numbered from 1 to 4.

You must start by the exterior series by hitting along the 1st axis (up right), then the 2nd axis (below

left), then the 3rd axis (bottom right), and finally the 4th axis (up left).

Once this first series fulfilled, you must do a thrust in the center of the diagram, then make the second

hitting series. The axis of this one corresponds to the 2nd numbers (starting for the exterior), the 1st

being at the bottom right.

Once the first part finished, immediately move to the second part.

Second part

AMRAP – 4' As Many Rep' As Possible

For 4 minutes, the participant must perform in this order the exercises described below, and

do them again as many times as he can.

1 - Parry 3 dagger assaults

The participant must parry 3 dagger assaults choosing for each assault the technic among

those listed.

❖ Assault 1 – Dagger attack from the up left of the unarmed participant.

♦ RX: First Master technic [11r-a].

♦ SCALED: First Master technic [10v-a].

❖ Assault 2 – Dagger attack from up left of the participant, who has a dagger.

♦ RX: Sixth Master technic [16r-d].

♦ SCALED: Sixth Master technic [16v-a].

❖ Assault 3 – Dagger attack from the bottom left of the unarmed participant.

♦ RX: Ninth Master technic [18r-c].

♦ SCALED: Ninth Master technic [17v-d].

Assault 1

♦ RX: First Master technic [11r-a].

Well covered to take your dagger off your hand, with this posture, I could also link you. If I

put my right hand under your right knee, I will make you fall, for I am good at this art.

♦ SCALED: First Master technic [10v-a].

I am the first master and I am called remedy, because remedy means I know how to remedy,

which means you don’t get hit, and on the contrary you can hit and hurt your enemy. And

thus, I have nothing better to do than throwing your dagger on the ground by turning my

hand on the left.

Assault 2

The Sixth Master that I am says that this cover is fine in armor and without armor. And with

such a cover, I can cover all sides, and enter in all keys and do all the grips and, to finish, hit

as will my students do. And each of my students does this cover, then does the plays he can

do.

♦ RX: Sixth Master technic [16r-d].

I did not leave the Sixth Master cover. My left arm turned above your right. And by according

Assault 3

I am the Ninth King, and I do not have my dagger any longer. And the grip I make from below,

is the grip made by the Fourth King from above, which I make from below.

But my plays are not made the same way as his. This grip has value with armor and without,

for I can make many strong plays. And with an armor as well as without, I certainly do not

have doubt about those who follow me.

♦ RX : Ninth Master technic [18r-c].

From my Master’s grip, I move to this one. And from this grip, it will not be long before I put

that I can have your dagger without fatigue.

♦ SCALED: Ninth Master technic [17v-d].

I followed my ninth Master with the grip he made. By releasing my right hand from the grip,

I took your dagger and I will make it turn to the top, close to your elbow. I will certainly put

the tip in the face, as did the student who is after me. I will do it this way, as I believe.

2- Perform a series of squats The participant must perform a serie of squats.

❖ RX: 12 Squats.

❖ SCALED: 8 Squats.

3- Perform the 5 master cuts

The participant must break, with the appropriated coup de maître, the various guards or

assaults. The technics are described in the next pages.

The guards or assaults will be performed in a random order. The participant only has one try

for each coup de maître.
