For some, it is a time to welcome cooler weather, changing colors in our trees, pumpkin spice everything and the coming month’s holidays that are right around the corner. For others, it is a time to put away bathing suits and sunscreen, winterize their campers and cabins, and hesitantly start to wear long sleeves again. This time of year reminds me how difficult times of transition can be for us human beings. We don’t do well in the middle. We either find ourselves looking back at the things we are missing or looking forward to the things that we want but aren’t here yet as I have seen in people already starting the countdown to Christ- mas! We often live our lives in this way: looking forward or looking back. We don’t do well living in the moment. Even in our faith I find this to be true. We either look forward to all the good things that are coming our way when we get to heaven or we spend our time looking back at the times when we fell short of the standards we set for ourselves. In the midst of all of that, God calls us to live in the present. Yes, we remember our past but we don’t dwell on it. Yes, we look forward to the glories that await us in the future but we don’t let that stop us from participating fully in the lives we are living. In this time when the seasons transition, I would encourage you to take this time to find something to do for your faith in the here and now. Whether it’s joining the choir or participating in a bible study group for the first time. Maybe you are called to start a new ministry at the church or volunteer to serve on a church committee (hey, a pastor can hope!) Whatever it is, use this time when things are starting anew to do something that you haven’t done before. Don’t let the seasons pass you by waiting for the next one to come. Brothers and Sisters,

This is a time of year that people either look forward to or wish they

could avoid. For some, it is a time to welcome cooler weather, changing

colors in our trees, pumpkin spice everything and the coming month’s

holidays that are right around the corner. For others, it is a time to put

away bathing suits and sunscreen, winterize their campers and cabins,

and hesitantly start to wear long sleeves again. This time of year reminds

me how difficult times of transition can be for us human beings. We don’t

do well in the middle. We either find ourselves looking back at the things

we are missing or looking forward to the things that we want but aren’t

here yet as I have seen in people already starting the countdown to Christ-

mas! We often live our lives in this way: looking forward or looking back.

We don’t do well living in the moment. Even in our faith I find this to be

true. We either look forward to all the good things that are coming our

way when we get to heaven or we spend our time looking back at the

times when we fell short of the standards we set for ourselves. In the

midst of all of that, God calls us to live in the present. Yes, we remember

our past but we don’t dwell on it. Yes, we look forward to the glories that

await us in the future but we don’t let that stop us from participating fully

in the lives we are living. In this time when the seasons transition, I would

encourage you to take this time to find something to do for your faith in the here and now. Whether

it’s joining the choir or participating in a bible study group for the first time. Maybe you are called

to start a new ministry at the church or volunteer to serve on a church committee (hey, a pastor can

hope!) Whatever it is, use this time when things are starting anew to do something that you

haven’t done before. Don’t let the seasons pass you by waiting for the next one to come. Live your

faith and your discipleship now!

UMC Spotlight: United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR)

Instead of sharing one of our social principles, I thought it would be helpful in light of the recent

natural disasters in our world (i.e. Hurricane Florence) to highlight the United Methodist

Committee on Relief and the work that they do for disaster relief. One of the great things about

UMCOR is that because of the donations that they receive on UMCOR Sunday that covers their

administrative costs, 100% of your donation to disaster relief goes towards recovery. –Pastor Dan

UMCOR’s MANDATE ¶ 1330.1. General Provisions—Purpose: The United Methodist

Committee on Relief (UMCOR) exists to assist United Methodists and churches to become involved

globally in direct ministry to persons in need through programs of relief, rehabilitation, and service,

including issues of displaced persons, hunger and poverty, disaster response, and disaster risk

reduction; and to assist organizations, institutions, and programs related to annual conferences and

other units of The United Methodist Church in their involvement in direct service to such persons in

need.

UMCOR responds to disasters of great magnitude that overwhelm a community’s ability to recover on

its own. Through UMCOR, United Methodists extend loving care to suffering people throughout the

world. UMCOR works in partnership with United Methodist Churches and other local partners to

address immediate relief and achieve sustainable recovery. This is done in a manner that is consistent

with global initiatives, standards, and best practices, with respect for the individuals, families, and

communities who “own their recovery.”

In its holistic response to disasters, UMCOR:

• Offers disaster preparedness training

• Provides essential relief supplies

• Supports long-term rebuilding efforts

• Assists communities as they adapt

UMCOR provides funding, training, expertise,

and facilitates partnerships to achieve

programmatic goals.

For those of you wondering how past donations may have been used, such as in the

case of Hurricane Maria, see the graphic to your right.

Now, turn the page to find out how you can help.

CURRENT DISASTER RESPONSE

UMCOR and our partners are responding to Hurricane Florence in the United States and Super

Typhoon Mangkhut (Ompong) in the Philippines. Please join us in prayer for the areas affected and

consider a gift to UMCOR Disaster Response. As we assess the impact of these storms, we will

provide timely updates as we receive information. We will also share additional ways in which you

can provide assistance.

Hurricane Florence

UMCOR is pleased to report that conferences are as

prepared as possible to respond to the damage caused

by Hurricane Florence. We ask that those wishing to

assist to please not self-deploy or donate unsolicited

items.

Cleaning Kits, Tool Trailers, and other supplies are

strategically placed throughout the region. Moreover,

experienced Early Response Teams and Disaster

Response Coordinators are prepared to assist

immediately when conditions permit. These teams

bring supplies into affected areas, begin cleanup and

assess for long-term assistance. The South Carolina

and North Carolina conferences have both requested

$10,000 emergency grants, which UMCOR awarded.

These grants allow for the immediate use of funds for

response after the storm.

The North Carolina Conference is responding to

damage caused by Florence in unprecedented ways.

Moreover, the conference reports that the Early

Response Team response is the best they have ever

seen. These teams are deployed throughout the south-

eastern portion of the Conference, and are assessing

and responding to the needs of multiple communities

and damaged structures.

In South Carolina, ERTs began home clean-outs on Tuesday morning (Sept. 25) in areas where

flood waters have subsided. The Conference continues to work with local Emergency Operations

Centers and local churches to conduct assessments. The Conference is also partnering with the Sal-

vation Army to distribute UMCOR Cleaning and Hygiene Kits. Much of the potentially damaged

properties are in areas where flooding has not subsided. and Hygiene Kits. Much of the potentially

Merry Hearts OCT 17

Noon @The Batdorf

On Sunday October 7th, congregations around the globe will celebrate World Communion Sunday. Countless gifted and qualified people face financial obstacles that hinder them from preparing for the vocation God has given them, especially youth and young adults. For ethnic students who will be the first generation in their families to attend college, or for those people of color who haven’t historically had access

to resources that make higher education possible, the road toward education has often been unwieldy.

What would it look like if the church today imitated Jesus’ affirmation of the full dignity and God-given potential of all women and men—especially those who’ve historically been assigned to the world’s margins? On World Communion Sunday, your giving helps to provide scholarships for national and international graduate students whom God has gifted to learn and to serve.

Pastor Appreciation Day is the second Sunday in October (Oct. 14th) and the entire

month of October is celebrated as Pastor Appreciation Month.
