To: Parents/Carers of Girvan Academy and Primary 7 Pupils
The purpose of the Open Evening is to allow you to view the school and the work of the school in an informal, relaxed fashion. Various activities and displays have been organised by departments and you are invited to view these at your leisure during the course of the evening. Please note that some of the activities will be taking place at set times as shown overleaf eg English, Home Economics To help you to find your way about the school:
You will receive a map of the building on your arrival
The building is well signposted
Senior staff and students will be on hand to act as guides – please ask! The purpose of this leaflet is to give you advance information so that you can plan your evening and ensure that you see everything that is on offer. During the course of the Evening you will be able to see the following activities in the

Expressive Arts Faculty

Art & Design
Displays of work in Rooms 1 and 2 plus display areas outside Art Rooms
Christmas card competition for the parents and visitors to judge.
This will be in the ceramics room.
Dance
Opportunity to watch the students perform dance pieces that have
been created in curricular and extra-curricular time.
Parents are invited to join in if the mood takes them!
Music
Music Department will be open to parents and pupils
Department resources and courses will be available to view and Staff
will be available for answering questions

Come along to Beastly Biology and see what the creepy crawlies look like
close up. Are you brave enough to look a wasp in the eye or suck up to a
leech?

Range of experiments set up. These will be “hands on” – you are invited
to take part.

Get zapped by the Van “de” Graaff generator and discover the wonders
of electricity

1. General display of work: Graphics, Product Design, Craft and
Design, Engineering craft skills, Woodwork craft skills.
2. Elective S1/2 work; Project with Culzean and Grants – Bird
Boxes and Bird Feeders Display. Items for sale.
3. Technical Challenge build a cube as quickly as possible to win a
Bird Box
4. Engineering Club Radio Controlled Rampaging Chariots running
around a set course.
5. Senior pupils in workshops producing ECS and PCS projects.

Demonstrations of equipment, hardware and software used in the
department, examples of pupils’ work and staff will be available to
answer questions and provide information
Computing
Room split up into 4 different areas:
1. Scratch Games and Kodu Games (Examples of pupil work), Pupil
Animations , Internet webwise quizzes, Internet Safety site, and
online Words-Per-Minute typing test.
2. Computer Devices – Old BBC Microcomputer v Modern PC,
display of different text books and departmental website, Pupil
Programming demos, Robots on Show! Pupils will demonstrate how
to program a robot using a mobile phone using blue tooth!
3. Warriors of the Net video. Multimedia Class example web sites.
Careers section.
4. Computer Science Inside workshop – How text messaging
actually works!
Computer Science 4 Fun – card tricks demonstrating computer
science principles.
