Introduction
We live in an age that is data-‐driven

Introduction – Some Key Points
o Many things that we do today result in produc)on and consump)on of unthinkable amounts of data.
o The internet is an enormous source of data, but in terms
of data that is just the )p of the iceberg.
o Not everything you can easily access is consumable. o Most datasets are not structured and not organised o It is very difficult to correlate data reducing its value
o And, you may oOen find that not every dataset is
complete. A lot may be hidden.
Useful Data is Very Expensive
o Many Telcos sell their data to companies interested in the movement of people: o Transporta)on service providers o Highway agencies o Construc)on companies o Large retailers

Benefits of Open Data
o Is there any advantage in making open data available vs. selling data? o Improving quality of transporta)on – reduc)on in costs
of providing services o Improving living standards/environment – a healthier
popula)on results in less investment in healthcare, greater efficiency in produc)on over consump)on
o Helping people plan their day and authori)es plan their services – contributes to beTer quality of life
o There is a significant drive in UK’s public sector to produce open data.
Where to start? – An example from UK
o Improving quality of transporta)on o Conges)on on roads o Conges)on within within buses, trains and tubes o Conges)on at bus/train sta)ons and key ins)tu)ons
o Improving living standards/environment o Quality of life – health, housing, crime sta)s)cs, etc. o Environment – emissions, air quality & climate data
o Helping people/authori)es plan o Transport – routes and schedules o Urban planning and smart ci)es
Who uses Open Data?

What to keep in mind?
o Producing/providing data involves some cost – both capital and opera)onal expenses
o Just providing a spreadsheet/archive might not make your data accessible – defeats the purpose
o Benefits/Pay-‐back takes )me (ex:-‐ you can’t improve air quality overnight)
o It is important to know your audience
Why are APIs important?
o Producing the right kind of data for the right audience
o Proper structure/organisa)on and ability to correlate
o Ability to manage: o Controlling access (throTling and freemium models) o Sta)s)cs and understanding usage paTerns o Being consumer-‐friendly by suppor)ng mul)ple
versions o Other advantages such as developer resources
(documenta)on, self-‐service portals etc.)
Why are APIs important?
Open Data providers in UK use API Management pla^orms. See hTp://wso2.com/api-‐management.
How to promote the use of Open Data?
o Hackathons o BeTer engagement of audience o Well defined goals o BeTer interac)on between par)cipants
o Documenta)on and Demos o Self-‐paced learning and useful resources for
developers
o Public events/briefings
o Incen)ves/Awards
