What is Open Access?
3
Open Access literature is digital, online, free of charge, and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions.
Free and open online access

Publishers promote authors
and their research
Scholars provide original,
well-written
research articles
In exchange, publishers receive money.
In exchange, scholar-authors receive good reputation, tenured positions.
Print journals were purchased by individuals or libraries, where customers could read and make copies of articles if needed. Print issues were owned by the library & available to library customers.

Shop around for an OA journal
Use online tools to find a journal that meets your needs: ● Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)
● Web of Science
● Beall’s list of predatory and questionable publishers (507 journals and 693 publishers in 2015)
Questions to ask: ● How ‘open’ is this journal?
● Is this OA journal peer-reviewed, included in WoS?
● How much is the APC?
● What are the APC funding possibilities?
Read Publisher’s Agreement before selecting the journal ● Sherpa Romeo database

Observations:
1. In 2007-2012 already around 25% OA refereed articles
2. Decrease in OA refereed articles in 2013-2014
3. Long way to go before everything is OA
Who is publishing OA refereed articles?
We all do, while we might not be aware of it!
