Congratulations to this year’s winners of Print Futures Awards. They impressed the judges with their enthusiasm, creativity, and passion for their chosen careers and, as one of the judges, I can say that the industry’s future looks to be in safe hands. The Printing Charity champions education and training and our flagship Print Futures Awards, which are grants of up to £1,500, help people aged 18 to 30 years gain qualifications and develop their workplace skills, as well as attract and retain new talent in the industry.

We spread our net far and wide this year and received a phenomenal response, with a record 275 applications from students and those already working in the industry.

We would like to thank our judges from across the industry sectors: Jane Allardice, Danny Arter, Steve Attwill, Louisa Bull, Julia Cole, Ursula Daly, Phil Foster, Amy Hutchinson, Charles Jarrold, Brett Lawrence, Janet Marshall, David McGuiness, Peter Melkowski, Andrew Neal, Bettine Pellant, David Phillips, Marian Stefani, Dale Wallis, and Susan Wright.

The 2017 Awards are sponsored by SAXOPRINT, who also printed this year’s brochure, The Book Trade Charity, and Unite the Union (GPM & IT Sector) and are supported by the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF), the Journalists’ Charity and St Bride Foundation.

Thank you to the Rt Hon the Baroness Dean of Thornton-le-Fylde for hosting this evening’s reception and to Lord Black of Brentwood for his continued support of the event.

Contact hours for Ben’s MSc journalism course finished in May, although he will be working on his dissertation until September. He will use the next four months to gain experience for a career as an investigative journalist, hopefully with an investigative organisation like The Bureau Local.

Jennifer works as a web editor for an independent publisher of translated fiction, for a literary prize, and as a freelancer for self-published authors and small publishers. She is developing her digital skill set, especially Photoshop and coding, to code her own websites and design graphics for book campaigns.

A recent textile design graduate, Mary has struggled since university to find an affordable and adequate print facility to continue her work. The Award will help fund a print membership of an open access screen-printing facility. She hopes to make more commercial interior prints to sell.

Dieter redeploys redundant analogue recording tape to create dynamic screen prints. He has developed a controlled drawing and print style through a process of exposing VHS and audio cassette tape onto silk screens, printing the results using a reductive screen print process. He will study for an MA Print at the RCA this year.

Amy is currently working at Fenwick in Tunbridge Wells as a full-time senior sales assistant. In September, she will be undertaking an MA in Publishing at UCL. Her aspiration is to work in the publishing sector as an editor of fictional book manuscripts.

Josh is studying graphic design at Shillington College in Manchester. He hopes to land a job with a design studio once the course finishes. If possible, he would love to continue studying, too, through workshops and other courses.
