No Wrong Door Sarnia-Lambton

Have you ever contacted an agency with a question or problem concerning your child, only to be told that they don’t have the answer? Instead they give you a phone number to call someone else?

Community partners in Sarnia-Lambton have joined together to help families find the services they need, in an efficient and informative manner. Parents looking for services for their children will always be at the right place. Community partners include:

St. Clair Child and Youth Services Pathways Health Centre for Children

Ontario Early Years County of Lambton Child Care Centres

Family Counselling Centre Lambton Public Health Children’s Aid Society

Through a Ministry of Child and Youth Services Innovation Fund Grant, the No Wrong Door Sarnia-Lambton System was developed. Resources and training have taken place to familiarize front line staff with the system. On July 2, 2013 the process was launched across Sarnia-Lambton. The process allows program staff to gather initial information from the family, help them to complete a Family Information Form, and with consent, fax the form directly to the intake person at a specific agency. Once the form is received, the agency will contact the family directly to set up a plan for screening or assessment. This streamlined process should eliminate confusion for families and create a user friendly system for referrals.

TIPS FOR INSTALLING

FORWARD-FACING CHILD CAR SEATS

Installing child car seats can be confusing, and sometimes overwhelming. Always refer to the child seat manual and your vehicle’s manual when installing a child car seat. Here are some things to remember when installing a forward-facing child seat:

Harness System and Chest Clip – Make sure the harness is properly buckled and tight. The straps on forward-facing seats should be at or above the shoulder. You should not be able to get more than 1 finger between the harness and the child. The chest clip should be at the child’s armpit level.

Child Seat Tight to Vehicle Seat – Once completely installed, the child car seat should not move more than 2.5 cm (1 inch) from side-to-side. Always use a tether attached to the appropriate anchor as described in your vehicle’s manual.

Tip – While facing the back of the vehicle, use your body weight to push down on the centre of the child car seat. Thread the UAS (universal anchor system) or the seat belt system (not both) through the appropriate path and attach the child car seat to the vehicle. The best system is the one that gets the tightest fit. Move the padding if necessary and pull the webbing up through the bottom of the car seat near the child's thigh area and pull it toward you. If you are able to kneel in the child car seat, try rocking the car seat side-to-side while pulling the webbing toward you. Pulling the webbing away from the child car seat makes it more difficult to tighten.

For more information on child restraint systems, upcoming clinics or videos visit www.lambtonhealth.on.ca, or call 519-344-2062 ext. 2346 or

toll free 1-800-387-2882.

Sowing the Seeds for Literacy … 2014

“Sowing the Seeds for Literacy-2014” is a one-day early literacy training event for early years educators including ECE and kindergarten teachers, librarians, and others working with young children. In its eighth year, we focus on multiple literacies, including numerical literacy and media literacy. Brenda Smith-Chant (Trent University) will share a morning Key Note presentation focusing on the importance of early numeracy experiences. In the afternoon, participants will create practical numerical literacy programming resources in our ever-popular book-inspired Make and Take sessions. In addition, participants will attend a session about media literacy in the context of the early years. Keep posted for more information about the “Sowing the Seeds for Literacy” 8th Annual Conference. Flyers will be distributed and will be available at www.soundstart.org in December 2013.
