Q:What are the physical and chemical behavior of acids and bases?

Physical Behavior of ACIDS: taste sour turn blue litmus paper to red

Physical Behavior of BASES: taste bitter feel slippery turn red litmus paper to blue

Chemical Behaviour of ACIDS: releases H- ions have a pH below 7 sometimes corrosiveChemical Behaviour of BASES: they provide OH- ions in solution combine with H+ donate electrons for sharing with an

electron-pair acceptor are proton acceptor

Q:How do we differentiate an acid from a base?

We can identify if a substance is an acid or a base through the use of an acid base indicator/ pH indicator.

How are the strength of acids and bases identified?

An important consideration when dealing with acids and bases is their strength; that is, how chemically reactive they act as acids and bases. The strength of an acid or base is determined by the degree of ionization of the acid or base in solution—that is, the percentage of dissolved acid or base molecules that release hydrogen or hydroxide ions. If all of the dissolved acid or base separates into ions, it is called a strong acid or strong base. Otherwise, it is a weak acid or weak base.

Q:What are pH indicators? pH indicator is also known as acid-base

indicator is a weak acid or a weak base The undissociated form of the indicator is a

different color than the iogenic form of the indicator. An Indicator does not change color from pure acid to pure alkaline at specific hydrogen ion concentration, but rather, color change occurs over a range of hydrogen ion concentrations. This range is termed the color change interval. It is expressed as a pH range.

Q:What are common applications/uses of acids and bases?

Acids and Bases are present in our everyday life. We use acids and bases in a lot of ways: for cleaning(muriatic acid), medicine(ascorbic acid), bathing(soap) etc. Here is a list for some common uses of Acids and Bases:

Acids: Backyard swimming pool Car Battery Soft Drinks Detergents lemons & oranges

Base: Backyard swimming pool Detergents toothpaste (in small amounts, used to

neutralize acids on your teeth) baking soda Soap toilet cleaner
