Tenacious D is made up of Jack Black and Kyle Gass and play primarily Comedy Rock.
Their genre is the main thing that makes them a niche. Every single one of their songs has humorous lyrics which only appeal to certain type of people as some of the songs can have quite rude humour.
Another example of a band in this genreis The Lonely Island.

3. Promotion
As well as being a musician, during the time of the birth of Tenacious D, Jack Black was also an actor.
This gave him the opportunity to promote his album a long with his acting as he played roles in a lot of comedy films which helped him.
Tenacious D also included famous friends to appear in videos whilst they also performed cameos in their friends videos. For example, Dave Grohl from the band Foo Fighters appeared in their video Tribute and Tenacious D appeared in Foo Fighters video Learn To Fly.

4. How this could help me
As the musician I have chosen has a large internet following on YouTube, using this to my advantage and making full use of Web 2:0 would help create a niche.
Also, having guest stars in her music videos such as other YouTube stars would increase the following.
