The Italian Parish of Indianapolis

B envenuto! Welcome to Holy

Rosary Church! Whether you

are a lifelong parishioner, a first-

time visitor to our parish, or

someone in between, we are

grateful you have joined us today.

Founded in 1909 as the Italian

Parish of Indianapolis, we continue

to serve as the parish home of

people of Italian heritage and also

embrace all Catholics in union with

Rome, including those devoted to

the Traditional Latin Mass

(Extraordinary Form) and the

Anglican Usage of the Roman Rite.

In the words of our founding

pastor, Msgr. Marino Priori:

“The church is the temple of the

Lord, the gate of heaven. Come

after a week of earthly cares, after

so much toil, after so many

sorrows, after so much pain. Rest

your limbs. Regenerate your spirit

at the sources of grace. Raise your

mind to God; thank Him for the

benefits received through His

creation and in daily life; ask for

strength so you can win all of life’s

struggles, and be able to possess

the fruits of redemption.”

points of potential contamination at a minimum, the weekly bulletin will remain available only through electronic

means. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause to those who prefer to pick up a paper bulletin at

church, but the health of our parishioners and guests is of great important to us.

Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, pray for us!

At this time, the Archdiocese of Indianapolis is limiting the size of congregations in its churches; therefore, we are re-quiring advance signups for indoor Saturday evening and Sunday Masses. A link to the online signup site will be emailed weekly to parishioners who subscribe to our parish email notification service.

CONFESSIONS: AFTER each weekday and Saturday morning Mass, or by appointment.

RECITATION OF THE ROSARY: English — Saturday at 4:15 p.m.; Sunday at 9 a.m. & 11 a.m.; Spanish — after 11:30 Sunday Mass.

MASS INTENTIONS: The standard stipend for Masses in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis is $10. Requests should indicate whether people are living

or deceased, and must be typed or written legibly. We will attempt to honor requested dates, but cannot guarantee they will be available. We recom-

A call is being made for all faithful Catholics to

stand up and reclaim our city and state for Christ.

Armed with the three weapons of the Eucharist, the

rosary and fasting, it’s time to go on the offensive

through a “Soldiers for Peace” Rosary Walk on

Wednesday, June 17. Meet for the 5:45 p.m. Mass at

Holy Rosary Church, then immediately after Mass

walk the mile square around downtown (South,

West, North and East streets) praying the rosary and

Chaplet of Divine Mercy. The plan is to spread Je-

sus’ and Mary’s grace and protection throughout the

entire city. The walk will take about an hour and a

half; those unable to complete the walk are invited to

join for as long as they are able. Future walks will be

planned for other downtown streets. If interested, call

Matt Evans at 317-370-5743 or Eric Slaughter at 317-

T he feast of Corpus Christi (the literal translation from Latin is “Body of Christ”) dates back to the twelfth and

thirteenth centuries. In English we now refer to it as the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. The feast devel-

oped after centuries of the Church experiencing and growing in understanding and devotion to this Great Sacrament of

Christ’s Love.

From the earliest times of Christianity — in fact, from the time of Christ Himself — the Church has understood the

Eucharist as a unique encounter with Him. St. John in his Gospel records the teachings of Christ Himself. In the fa-

mous Bread of Life Discourse, the Lord said to His disciples that in order to have real and true life within them they

must eat His flesh and drink His blood. Many of Christ’s disciples, not surprisingly, questioned the Lord on this teach-

ing. To them it sounded strange, impossible and even disgusting. They asked for clarification. Christ then repeated

and emphasized what He had already said:

Amen, amen, [Since taking an oath was “forbidden” by Jewish law, this is the way in which Jews in the time of Christ

would say, “I solemnly swear that what I am about to say is true, so help me God”] I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of

the Son of Man and drink His blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has

eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. Whoever eats My

flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me and I in him (Jn 6:53-56).

This teaching causes the first big division among His disciples. John makes a point of telling us that many could not

accept it, and so they left Christ.

In the Eucharist, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the Church teaches that we receive Christ. We receive Christ sacra-

mentally but entirely: His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. Everything that Christ IS, we receive in Holy Communion.

How Christ is truly present in this sacrament has been the subject of much theological discussion and development

over the last two millennia. That He is truly and substantially present has never been doubted by the Church. The Host

we receive at Holy Communion is a “who” not a “what.” Christ teaches us: “No greater love has a man than to lay

down his life for his friends” (Jn 15:13). At each and every Mass, out of love for us, He does just that.

How beautifully and intimately Christ embraces us from within when, out of His great love for us, He physically and

spiritually enters into “my” body and soul. Our faith and our souls are put into danger when we fail to prepare our-

selves by the Sacrament of Confession and by acts of love in our lives and prayers. As St. Paul teaches: “Whoever,

therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the Body and

Blood of the Lord” (1 Cor. 11:27).

Let us pray that we might seek this “kiss” of divine affection only out of true love, and that we may never approach

this sacrament selfishly, indifferently or having failed to reconcile ourselves to Him, but always with the love, rever-

ence and devotion we owe to Christ. In approaching Holy Communion, we declare ourselves free from all serious sins

and “in love” with the Lord. May every act of communion be an offering of our lives to the Lord as He has offered

Himself to us.

Appunti del Parroco: a Message from the Pastor

The Rev. C. Ryan McCarthy

Pope St. John Paul II calls police to understand ‘special value of each person’

The following quote comes from an address made April 12, 1985, to the Catholic Police Guild of England and Wales:

Y ours is a work of service and of brotherhood. As such it needs the support of a profound sense of

the unique dignity of every human being. The special value of each person can only be fully un-

derstood where each one is accepted as an image of God Himself and a brother or sister of Christ. I

hope that your work, which sometimes brings you into contact with the darker side of human nature,

will not deter you from enthusiastically serving the cause of civic harmony and well-being with sensi-

tivity and Christian hope.
