DESCRIPTION

Cloud storage providers and customers must also be mindful of geography. Though cloud computing assumes the actual data center location is unimportant, national privacy laws vary widely, and some governments will prosecute companies that allow data to cross “real world” borders. Sensitive data from European customers must reside in servers that are in Europe and must not travel outside of Europe on the way to being stored. Likewise, some types of data in the United States must reside in and be transmitted only in the United States.

To Cloud or Not To Cloud Backup

The latest fad in computing and technology these days is cloud computing. What cloud computing basically means is sharing resources over the Internet rather than investing money in hardware, software etc. Online Backup is a great example that demonstrates the advantages of using the cloud. Instead of buying a server or NAS appliance to backup your data you can subscribe to an online backup service.

What you are essentially doing by switching to this cloud backup solution is as follows:-

You are not depleting your capital budget. You are being green by reducing the carbon footprint. How? You are not buying backup servers or a

NAS or SAN that will consume more electricity and more energy. You are sharing resources such as the Infrastructure of your backup provider. Although it is

physically one central location, the data is logically separated for each customer so it is secure. You are getting rid of antiquated technology such as tapes which are unreliable and expensive to

maintain. Don’t forget about the pain your IT Manager had to go through to switch the tapes and check the backups on the tapes (and that’s if he/she is even doing it). Imagine how many hours he/she spends on managing this process every week.

You are automating the backup process because it runs on a schedule and requires no human intervention.

Recovery in most cases is as simple as logging in, finding the files your want to recover and pressing the “Recover Now” button.

You can scale with ease. Your data backup is growing in size. No problem! Just be prepared to pay a little more every month. You don’t have to go out and buy any hardware or software.

Another benefit of going with the cloud route is the managed services that come with it. In most cases, the backup provider will help you to setup your backup process, policy and schedule. They will also help you to recover your files when you need it most. All this without spending a single additional cent. In this economy, this should be considered a big plus.

Did you know that new compliance and government regulations are pushing businesses to reevaluate their data backup processes and many of these regulations also require businesses to store their data in an offsite secure location? Remember that tapes are unreliable and they fail over 50% of the time during a recovery scenario. So backing up to tapes and storing the tapes offsite is not enough.
