It might be very easy to pass up Algoma Trad’s property on F&G Line if you don’t know what you’re looking for, but in the not too distant future that is going to change. On a beautiful Saturday afternoon volunteers continued their work at the property. While you may know Algoma Trad for the various dances, concerts

and of course the camp they have in the summer, you may not know they are in the long process of building a heritage arts centre on F&G. While they do have some events, there are many more planned for the future.

and shrubs were planted on site thanks to school chil-dren and other volunteers. The river runs along the beautiful property and this is where the planting has taken place.

This project is something that is obviously going to take a number of years. While quite a few trees planted last year had taken, there is also a lot of die off. Turns out this was expected, with as much as 70% of the seedlings expected to die. Transplanting seedlings is a difficult task but with lots going on at the property, the hard work will pay off Julie Schryer and Pat O’Gorman are not only working at restoring the property but improving it as well.

We are sure to be hearing more from them and the work they do in the near future.

Voter Turnout In Algoma—Manitoulin Lower than average

By now, pretty much everyone knows MPP Micheal Mantha has been relected in Algo-ma—Manitoulin. With voter turnout up in gen-eral in Ontario to over 58%, it’s interesting to see that in our neck of the woods turnout was about 6% lower. Just 52.40% of registered voters cast a ballot. Black Swallowtail Butterfly

If you have a flower garden, dandelion explosion or honeysuckle or lilac, then you’ve probably seen these butterflies all over your property. Black Swallowtails are found all over North America and are the state butterfly of New Jersey and Oklaho-ma. The Latin name for these butterflies is papilio polyxenes, named after Polyxena, the youngest daughter of King Priam of Troy. The caterpillars are fat and green and sometimes known as parsnip worms because they mainly feed on parsnips. The caterpillars will spend the winter in chrysalis form, then in the spring the adult butterflies emerge in search of food.

Males emerge from cocoons first in order to se-cure territories which might have no significant sources of nectar or larval host plants. They will spend 95% of their time in their territory and will aggressively chase other males away. The males that emerge first will most likely defend territory that is preferred by females, but why they prefer the territories is unknown.

Male and female swallowtails have different wing patterns. Females tend to be much larger, and the large the female the more fertile she is. Female wing patterns mimic the poisonous pipevine swal-lowtail to deter predators and some males will have also adapted the same colouring patterns as well. Males have large rows of yellow dots on their black wings where females will have prominent blue areas between the yellow dots.

Greetings from the museum, we are now open for the 2018 season. I am happy to report that despite the brutally cold winter that lasted for almost 6 months that the museum faired just fine. I got off to a later start this year because of the weather so the past three weeks I’ve been cramming a lot into my days getting pre-pared for the season. The warm spell we had at the end of May made opening a pleasure. The museum is open and ready for visitors, there will be some changes this season start-ing with a major maintenance project, a new roof on the log school. It’s been deteriorating over the past few years and it was decided that before it gets to too far that it would be re-placed. Janet Callahan, a board member had a great idea for a fundraiser and she pulled this successful fundraising event together rather quickly at the end of May and it is allowing us to proceed with this project. Way to go Janet, all museum board members, friends and pre-senters that volunteered their time for this worthwhile event! Your efforts are greatly appreciated. All names have been added to our friends of the museum board list at the mu-seum. This little schoolhouse is so important to us as it was the Island’s first school built in 1877. Its original location was on Sailor’s Encampment and it was moved to the museum site in 1983. If you haven’t seen this gem, I in-vite you to come and visit, when you step inside it’s like taking a step back in time.

The other major change around the museum this year is an acting curator, I’d like to intro-duce Colleen Stubbe, Colleen is an Islander born and raised and is part of the Kent fami-ly. She will be looking after the museum this season while I take a leave of absence. So, do drop in and say hello to Colleen, renew your membership or become a member, take a look around and “take a stroll back in time”.

The museum moment column won’t be a regu-lar column each week this season but there will be the odd one throughout the summer to keep museum happenings up to date.Carrie Kennedy-Uusitalo
