ONGAONGA SCHOOL NEWSLETTER – 10TH DECEMBER 2019 - TERM 4 - WEEK 9
Greetings to the Ongaonga School Community.
Ngā Mihi nui ki a Koutou.
Prizegiving
Sports Prizegiving – Thursday, 12th December at 1.30pm –
acknowledging the outstanding sporting achievements of
our students throughout the year.
Whole School Prizegiving – Monday, 16th December at
5.30pm – acknowledging service awards and celebrating
excellence and achievement.
Both events will be held at school unless it is wet, in which case we
will utilise the Ongaonga Hall. Students are to wear uniform to both
prizegiving days, the only exception being the Year 8 students, who
for their final year, are expected to be dressed formally.
End of Year Reports
End of year reports are being issued today. They are issued at this
time of year so if you have a question about the content, you have
time to contact your child’s teacher before the end of the year,
rather than sitting on it over the break.
Classes for Next Year
Class placements for 2020 are tentatively set with the current
information we have. Students will visit their 2020 classes to meet
their new teacher or be informed of their new teacher and
classmates on Monday morning. This is a great way to remove
anxiety over the holiday break. I would like to clarify that the 2020
class placement is the most likely scenario to occur. If we have a
number of families move in or out of the area, we may have to
adjust classes accordingly at the start of school next year.
Class lists will be on the office window on Friday morning.
Room 1 - Melissa Jacobs
Room 3 – Theresa Beamish
Room 4 – Isabelle Berry
Room 5 – Rose Illsley
Room 6 – Amy McIlroy
Twilight Market
Our twilight Christmas market is this Friday and the students are
working hard creating their products and getting them ready to
sell. The market starts at 5.30pm in the evening and there will be a
sausage sizzle along with some demonstrations of different
activities. At the market, stalls will be selling their product using
Onga Dollars which can be exchanged with NZ dollars at the
Ongaonga Bank in the school office. Children can exchange their
money through their teachers, parents can exchange money at the
Ongaonga Bank in the school office. Today’s exchange rate is $NZ1
= $Onga1. As it is a Christmas theme, students can be dressed in
Xmas mufti. We would love to see you all there!
Last Day
We finish on Tuesday, 17th December at 12.30pm. Buses will leave
shortly after our finishing time around 12.40pm.
A final thought…
I wish you a safe and happy Christmas
and New Year break. Karen Barkle
Miniball and Athletics Tops not returned
There are 3 Miniball/sports t-shirts that have not been
returned. Invoices will be sent home with payment expected
please before the end of this term.
Colour Run 16th Dec @ 2pm.
Thank you to parents for returning your slips of paper.
This is a fun activity for the students with a course set up
around the back field with obstacles, water and music. Adults
with coloured powder in squeezy bottles/buckets will be
‘splatting’ the runners. The participants wear either white
T-shirts, costumes or old clothes and have a fun time! Mums
and Dads can come along too! Thanks to Mel King for the
idea and organisation! If this year is a success, we will look at
running another in 2020 as a school fundraiser involving the
whole community.
Some information regarding the powders are as follows;
Q: What dyes are used in the colour powder?
A: The synthetic food colourings used to colour the powders are:
Red: C.I. 16255 / E 124
Green: C.I. 19140 / C.I. 42090 / E 102 / E 133
Pink: C.I. 14720 / E 122
Yellow: C.I. 19140 / E 102
Orange: C.I. 19140 / E 102
Blue: C.I. 42090 / E 133
Purple: C.I. 42090 / E 133 E 124 / C.I. 16255
It is recommended that anyone with a known allergy to any of these
food colourings do not contact the powder.
Q: What are the ingredients of the powder?
A: It is predominantly (~98%) Corn starch (CAS #9005-25-8) known
as Cornflour in New Zealand mixed with the food colourings listed
above (~1%).
Small amounts of the following compounds are added:
Saleratus = potassium bicarbonate – it is also the main ingredient
of baking powder and is used to make to make the powder
non-flammable/dust-explosive
Sodium Chloride = salt for moisture absorption which increases
shelf-life
Tri calcium = calcium salt of phosphoric acid – it is an anticaking
agent which stops the formation of lumps. Commonly
found in baby powder and toothpaste
Q: Is the powder gluten free?
A: Yes. As there is no gluten protein in the starchy (carbohydrate)
portion of a corn grain. The facility that the colour powder is
manufactured in only produces colour powder so there is no concern
with cross contamination.
Q: Will the powder affect asthmatics?
A: The colour powder will create a cloud of colour powder in the air,
for most people inhaling a small amount of the colour powder as
they move through the cloud is not
problematic.
