The Challenge
The NASA Workforce Plan includes five principles:
Plan and Position for Mission Success
Enable Efficient Human Capital Services
Recruit and Employ a Highly-Qualified, Diverse Workforce
Train and Develop Talent
Sustain a High – Performing Workforce
Enhancing NASA’s Diverse, Highly Qualified and Multi-generational Workforce
3
Our Method
Implement an Agency-Wide workforce development initiative: OSSI
Transition a high-performing and diverse student pool into the NASA workforce, including industry and academia
Recruit students from ALL Institutions of Higher Education (IHE)
4
Enhancing National Branding of NASA’s Internship & Fellowship Opportunities
Create Two National Programs
- NASA Internship Program
(Undergraduate Students)
- NASA Fellowship Program
(Graduate Students)
OSSI Strategic Model
Nationally Brand NASA’s Student OpportunitiesPillar I: Recruit, Retain, &
Develop
To enhance the recruitment, retention and professional development of highly qualified STEM students for the NASA workforce pipeline. This will include career path liaisons who engage, inspire, and guide students toward career self-understanding.
Key Partners: Students, Broker-Facilitators Corps, Business Manager, Mentors, Project Managers, Center OSSI Administrators & System Administrator
Pillar II: Select, Place, & Mentor
To select students for opportunities and provide placements that most appropriately match students’ academic preparation, competencies and interests with NASA workforce goals; To provide mentoring and support that ensure successful navigation throughout the internship and fellowship experience from beginning to end.
Key Partners: Students, Business Manager, Mentors, Project Managers, Center OSSI Administrators, Center Selection Panels, & System Administrator

STEM Workforce Development Processes
Pillar III. Workforce Entry
To formalize the transition of student participants in NASA Education internship and fellowship opportunities into the workforce, including NASA, the aerospace industry and academia. Therefore, providing a greater return on NASA’s investment in Education interns and fellows.
Key Partners: Students, Project Managers, Human Capital, & Diversity Staff
Pillar IV. Longitudinal Study
To support the evaluation and longitudinal study processes of the NASA Office of Education Performance Management (OEPM) System; To provide alumni OSSI participants opportunities for re-entry into the OSSI processes.
Key Partners: Students/Alumni, Education Performance Management System, System Administrator, Business Manager, & Broker-Facilitators Corps

In Summary the One Stop Shopping Initiative is…
Working to build and sustain a more diverse, flexible, high performing, scalable, and multi-generational workforce
Utilizing the four pillars of the OSSI Strategic Model to nationally brand NASA’s student opportunities and develop the STEM workforce
Forming partnerships and identifying key stakeholders
Standardizing internship and fellowship recruitment and selection processes
Creating the groundwork for process evaluation and longitudinal study
14
TO NASA: By supporting the development of a high-performing and
diverse pipeline of students able to meet NASA’s future strategic workforce needs in STEM and allied disciplines
TO STUDENTS: By providing access to various NASA opportunities
through a single portal and a single application
TO ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS: By making NASA opportunities
readily accessible to students and their parents, mentors and academic advisors (e.g., faculty, placement and other university staff and administrators)
TO INDUSTRY: By providing opportunities that help prepare students for
the nation’s workforce needs in STEM and allied disciplines through experiential learning opportunities and educational financial support
OSSI Provides Value…
