Welcome to Austin’s AWM!
June marks the beginning of a new year for the Austin Alliance for Women in
Media Board. We have some amazing talent that will lead this organization to
great success this coming year and I am honored to serve as the new
President.
One of AWM’s goals is to work to improve the quality of media. In this industry
with constant change, we hope to create a dialogue and provide useful
information to help develop and advance those in the Austin media community.
We have (3) big events each year: Battle of the Media Stars in October, Spirits
in early December and Gala in late April. We look forward to your support for
each of these events in the coming year that will contribute to the annual
Student Scholarship. In addition, our monthly luncheons will provide AWM
members with a chance to interact and listen to the latest happenings in our
industry.
Remember that everyone has the potential to give something back so we
encourage all to participate. Please reach out to myself or anyone on the board
for more information. We look forward to a tremendous year for Austin’s AWM!

MEDIA MILESTONES
PATTI C. SMITH, President & General Manager of KVUE-TV
This month, AWM would like to recognize one of the 2002 Alliance for Women in Media Trailblazer: Patti C. Smith, President & General Manager of KVUE-TV. Patti will be leaving KVUE at the beginning of July after 17 years as the station’s GM and a storied career.
Patti began her career while still in college as a master control operator at KTBC-TV. After graduation, she returned to her native Rio Grande Valley and took a job at KGBT-TV in Harlingen as a receptionist and ran the camera at night and on weekends. She returned back to the Austin station where she got her start and eventually became the first women to direct a newscast at KTBC. After stints as operations manager, news director and local/regional sales director at KGBT, she took her first GM gig at KVEO-TV, taking it from the brink of bankruptcy to profitability within a year. She returned back to Austin in 1999 to take the helm of KVUE. Under her leadership, the station has won countless awards, including the NAB Education Foundation’s Service to America Award, the highest honor in the country for public service performed by a radio or television station. In 2004, Patti was honored by her peers with the TABs Broadcaster of the Year Award, one of Texas broadcasting’s most coveted honors, and served as TABs Chairman of the Board in 2006.
Patti’s guiding principles of leadership are honesty, integrity and fairness. Her biggest accomplishments have been the friendships and relationships formed since the launch of her career in 1975. Her advice to those entering our industry is that she hopes that they love it as much as she does and that they realize they have the opportunity to change lives every day. Patti plans to travel, spend more time with her family and continue to hone her photography skills.
On behalf of the Austin Alliance for Women in Media, THANK YOU, Patti for your many years of service, your dedication to the Austin community and your support of AWM!
