ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation, Inc. is next to use the Department of Agriculture-Philippine Rural Development Program’s (DA-PRDP) Applied Geo-tagging Tool for better monitoring of its development projects.
The technology is an innovative use of geo-tagging, pioneered to improve transparency in government infrastructure projects to avoid fraud and corruption especially in remote areas with the use of Global Positioning System (GPS).
Users need to have GPS-enabled phones and internet connection in order to upload the captured photos to Google then the data will be embedded to Google Earth. Right now, DA-PRDP is sharing this procedure to different agencies to help in project managements and development programs.
WHO SAID GEO-TAGGING IS ONLY FOR ENGINEERS?The good thing about geo-tagging is that, one does not need to be an engineer to do it.
ALKFI To Use
With the use of the technology, Local Government Units and citizens can now monitor the before, during, and after of different projects in different areas.
But according to Engr. Samuel Belamide, the Geo-mapping and Governance Specialist of DA-PRPD, geo-tagging does not end after project completion. “Geo-tagging does not stop after a project has been completed or only until the operation and maintenance,” he said. “It can also be used in impact evaluation. So after three years, what is the impact of this particular project? We can also know that using geo-tagging.”
BENEFITS FOR ALKFIDA-PRDP’s Applied Geo-tagging tool is a great assistance to ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation, Inc.’s projects and programs.
It is cost-efficient and for easy reference. Because of the technology used, it will allow project managers, agencies, donors and partners, to verify and monitor the changes and developments of the projects being done in the community without travelling to the site or going to the exact location of the community.
It will also provide important information of the projects such as dates, locations, and be able to get rid of forged data.
The next goal of ALKFI is to use geo-tagging in the communities of Samar and Tacloban to monitor the reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts being done, to train the residents of BNJ who will be the front liners to help in supervising the progress in the community of BayaNiJuan sa Southville 7 may it be about the projects or the residents, and to administer the ongoing rehabilitation of different esteros under Kapit Bisig Para sa Ilog Pasig, through its Information Technology Department.
ALKFI is also looking forward to more possibilities to use geo-tagging to its other programs.

KAPIT BISIG PARA SA ILOG PASIG
Releasing around 10 inches of raindrops that drowned most of the cities in Metro Manila and nearby provinces, Typhoon Mario now joins the roster of the worst typhoons together with Ondoy and Yolanda. Within the 24-hour period of September 19, Typhoon Mario caused massive flooding displacing at least 37,000 residents from their homes.
Such was not the case in the esteros of Manila. The residents living nearby remained unruffled recognizing the lush and unclogged waterways that surround them. ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya’s Kapit Bisig para sa Ilog Pasig (KBPIP) and notable partners endeavored to rehabilitate these esteros connected to the Pasig River. The strategy is to clean the river’s tributaries to genuinely revive the entire river system.
Two years ago, residents from Estero de Paco were also spared from the flood brought by habagat in August 2012 – a notable feat after the estero was ravaged by Typhoon Ondoy in 2009. The clogged-free estero prevented waters from overflowing; instead it just went straight into the streams. As stated by MMDA Manila Flood Control Head Alexander Mohammad, “The perennial flooding of Estero de Paco catchment decreased. The flooding
Esteros in Manila remain untouched by Typhoon Mario
problem was solved. Hopefully all the esteros will be like Estero de Paco.”
686 Paco Manila said.
KBPIP is the non-government partner of the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission, transforming 17 tributaries of the Pasig River from dangerous, flood-prone slums into green parks in the city. PRRC is the lead agency in rehabilitating the Pasig River and its tributaries. Esteros de Paco, Pandacan, Concordia and Santibañez are under the management of KBPIP.
The success of this project affirms that the dream of having flood-free Metro Manila can be achieved.
