1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

PPEPCA realizing the need for greater collaboration between Academia and the Petroleum

Industry has focused to strengthen the cooperation between the two stake holders. Its Expert

Committee on HRM took this initiative under the visionary and dynamic leadership of Lt Gen

Raza Muhammad Khan (Retd), who is also the Managing Director Mari Petroleum Company

Limited and the current Vice Chairman of PPEPCA.

Initiatives undertaken to reinforce academia-industry relations include conduct of Symposiums,

Imparting of Trainings and visits by students E&P facilities especially in the field. In this

connection first symposium was held at Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad in collaboration

with its School of Management Sciences and Department of Earth Sciences on March 22, 2012

under the title “Exploring HR Practices in the Oil & Gas Industry".

HRM Committee has organized its second symposium entitled “Industry Academia

Collaboration” in coalition with the Department of Petroleum Engineering, NED University of

Engineering & Technology, Karachi. The symposium organized at NED University on

Wednesday, May 29, 2013 provided an opportunity to students and faculty members of

Universities located in the south of the country to participate. Presence of representative from

PPEPCA and PPEPCA’s HRM Committee, MD/CEO’s, senior executives from petroleum

companies, Government organizations and delegates from Academia including faculty members

and students from all Universities of Sindh Province that offers Petroleum Engineering and

Geosciences discipline highlighted the event. The NED University of Engineering & Technology

was represented by Vice Chancellor, Deans, Chairmen, Faculty members and students. The

symposium included an inaugural session chaired by Prof Dr. M. Afzal Haque, Vice Chancellor

NED University and a post tea Technical Session was presided by Lt Gen Raza Muhammad

Khan (Retd), President PPEPCA’s Expert Committee on HRM. This session was marked by

presentation of four papers; two each from Industry and Academia and a very interactive panel

discussion. The symposium was concluded with closing remarks by MD/CEO MPCL and Vote

of thanks by Dean (CEA), NED University. The shields distribution, Lunch and visit to

Petroleum Engineering laboratories marked the overall wrapping up of the event. An amount of

Rs. 400,000/- was allocated by PPEPCA for meeting the expenditure incurred in the conduct of

the symposium. MPCL & PPL also distributed souvenirs on first come first served basis.

This report presents the details of all activities related to the conduct of this one day symposium

on “Industry Academia Collaboration”.

2. ORGANIZING COMMITTEE

The PPEPCA’s HRM Committee vide its letter No. PPEPCA/137(XIII)/2013 dated April 24,

2103, formulated an organizing committee for successful conduct of the symposium. The

committee included the representatives from PPEPCA, MPCL, PPL & NED UET. Well defined

responsibilities were assigned to each. Details of the same are provided as under:

4. REGISTRATION.

About 350 participants representing both Industry and Academia registered for the Symposium.

Over 40 members representing PPEPCA, its HRM Committee, MD/CEO’s of PPL, MPCL,

KUFPEC and senior executives from OGDCL, PPL, MPCL, Eni Pakistan, GHPL & POPH

attended the symposium. DG, NIO and others were also present. A large number of (over 300)

faculty members and students representing almost all the Universities of Sindh Province offering

Petroleum Engineering or Geosciences discipline attended the seminar. These included Mehran

University of Engineering & Technology, Jamshoro (MUET); Dawood University of

Engineering & Technology, Karachi; NED University of Engineering & Technology, Karachi;

Sindh University, Jamshoro; University of Karachi; Federal Urdu University, Karachi; and

Bahria University, Karachi. NED University of Engineering & Technology was represented by

Vice Chancellor, Deans, Chairmen, Faculty members and students. Details are provided at

attached Annexure 1. & 11.

5. INAUGURAL SESSION

The session was chaired by Prof Dr. M. Afzal Haque, Vice Chancellor, NED University.

Ms. Mizna Zaidi and Ms.Yemna, Lecturers at Petroleum Engineering Department took the

podium as moderators. They briefed the participants about emergency exits available in the

Auditorium in case such a situation arises. Guests were invited to take their seats on the stage.

The session started with the recitation of Holy verse by Mr. Waleed Anwer, a final year student

of Department of Petroleum Engineering.

5.1. Welcome Address

Lt Gen Raza Muhammad Khan (Retd), President

PPECA Expert Committee on HRM delivered the

welcome address. On behalf of PPEPCA, he

welcomed delegates from different Universities of

Sindh and from other parts of the country

representing the Industry and the Academia. He

thanked NED University for arranging the

Symposium. He applauded the quality of education

imparted at this institution and its laboratory

facilities. Lt Gen Raza Muhammad Khan (Retd), who

is also the current Vice President of PPEPCA, emphasized on the importance of Industry

Academia collaboration and highlighted the efforts of PPEPCA and particularly the PPEPCA’s

Committee on HRM /MPCL for its valuable contributions in this direction. He with a visionary

outlook projected the Road map for this very important linkage that has to play a vital role in

meeting the energy challenges of Pakistan.

5.2. Inaugural Address

Prof Dr. M. Afzal Haque, Vice Chancellor NED

University delivered the Inaugural Address. He

thanked PPEPCA & PPEPCA’s Committee on HRM

for selecting NED University for conducting

Symposium on “Industry Academia Collaboration” and

for inviting him to chair this important event. He

emphasized that the present energy scenario of the

country warrants a much deeper collaboration between

academia and the industry to build robust technological

base within the country. He added that new discoveries, optimization of production and effective

management of available resources can help Pakistan to move towards self-reliance in energy

sector and this objective can only be realized through the availability of highly professional

human resource. While expressing his hope that the symposium will conclude successfully and

shall set goals for strengthening the linkage between the Industry and Academia for the

development of the country in general and the two entities in particular, the Vice Chancellor

strongly suggest that the Academia MUST focus to produce quality engineers and scientists to

overcome the energy crises in our country and for that the industry MUST also come forward to

join hands in this Nation Building Process. He also praised the efforts of PPL & MPCL and

Petroleum Advisory Board in this regards.

5.3. Distribution of Shields.

After the inaugural ceremony the shields / mementos of the symposium were distributed among

the Chief Guest, President PPEPCA Committee on HRM and other dignitaries on the stage.

5.4. Group Photo

Before the conclusion of inaugural session a memorable group photo was taken with the Chief

Guest & other dignitaries.

5.5. Refreshment.

A high tea was served to all participants and related staff outside the Auditorium in a well

partitioned arrangement set for Guest and Students by La Rosh Caters, Karachi.

6. TECHNICAL SESSION

This session was presided by MD/CEO Mari Petroleum Company Limited; Lt Gen Raza

Muhammad Khan (Retd). The major activities covered by this session included paper

presentations, panel discussions, closing remarks, vote of thanks and distribution of shields.

6.1 Paper Presentations

Four papers; two each from Industry and Academia were presented. The papers mainly focused

the present HR & Technical issues being faced by the Oil Industry and on the importance of

Industry-Academia Collaboration for addressing these issues. Brief of each presentation is

provided as under:

Presentation No. 1. HR Retention Strategies in Today’s Oil Market by Zahid Momin,

(Organization Development Advisor, Eni Pakistan)

The paper highlighted the serious issue of draining out of trained

professionals from the oil companies in response to lucrative offers

from foreign countries especially Middle East. It discussed the need

to implement new retention strategies and highlighted that the

businesses must improve their working environment to retain

existing workforce and to keep it motivated.

Presentation No. 2. Academia Industry Linkages for Better Pakistan by Prof Sarosh H. Lodi,

(Dean CEA, NED University)

The presentation highlighted Academia and Industry as the two major contributors in the

development of economy of the country. A realistic, reliable and sustainable linkage between

them leads to innovations and prosperity. It addresses the problems and put forward a strategy

for strengthening this linkage between the two stake holders for better Pakistan. The paper

concluded with identifying a need for more effective collaboration between Industry and

Academia in Pakistan.

Presentation No. 3. Integrated Workflow From Rocks to Flow Simulation by A. Rauf,

(Sr. Geophysicist, MPCL).

The paper presented the use of integrated workflow technique as a tool for rock characterization

to flow simulation. It describes a case study of systematic and logical workflow for

characterizing a UAE outcrop of the Upper Thamama reservoir (of Cretaceous age) by

integration of sequence stratigraphy, geologic modelling and fluid flow simulation. The

presentation showed that Reservoir modelling with element models is very instrumental in

developing an integrated workflow, understanding the influence of various reservoir features on

fluid flow behaviour, and in evaluating strategies for managing water production.

Presentation No. 4. Development of Unconventional Hydrocarbon Resources in Pakistan –

Prospects and Limitations, by Prof Abid M. Khan,

(Chairman Petroleum Engineering Department, NED University)

The presentation focused on the need of systematic study for reliable estimates of unconventional

hydrocarbon resources in Pakistan. While highlighting the available potential estimates of shale

gas, tight gas, gas hydrates and CBM in Pakistan, it emphasized on the need of special

development techniques for reliable data acquisition. It also discussed the challenges in

unconventional resources that start from geology and petro physics with emphasis on

completion, production and reservoir analysis; maximizing the recovery, minimizing the

development costs and maximizing the revenue. It suggests overcoming the technical and

financial limitation in development of these resources with joint efforts of Industry and

Academia.

6.2 Panel Discussion

The panel discussion was presided by President PPEPCA’s HRM Committee, and included the

following:

Lt Gen Raza Muhammad Khan (Retd) while initiating the panel discussion, deliberated

on the Importance of Industry Academia collaboration. He explained the commitments

of PPEPCA in this regards and informed about various activities accomplished by the

committee/ MPCL and the activities planned for future. “The industry MUST support

the Academia for the effective development of hydrocarbon resources of the country”,

stated MD/CEO, MPCL.

Prof Dr. Afzal Haque stressed on the need of linkage between the Academia and

Industry, “The Industry Academia collaboration is a key to success and is a prerequisite

for research and development,” emphasized by the Vice Chancellor, NED University.

Prof. Haque shared with the participants about the NED University on going

collaborative projects with industry and about the availability of laboratory facilities at NED

University and offered his support for utilization of these facilities by the industry.

MD /CEO PPL, Mr. Asim Murtaza Khan while agreeing in principle to take all

initiatives to facilitate students with trainings and internships, emphasized that

these should add value to the capacity of the recipient, which means designing all

programmes according to what university is seeking and what the industry can

offer. He elaborated further that the gap between academia and the oil and gas

industry must be bridged if Pakistan wants to produce ground-breaking research

that contributes to the country’s socioeconomic progress. The country also needs to

move on from small projects and start developing a broad vision for education and

research, which will not only help the industry, but will also generate the required

human resource and create employment openings.

MD KUFPEC Mr. Shahid Salim Khan while speaking on the Industry Academia

relationship emphasized on utilizing institution's capabilities to update syllabi and

producing best product which University can deliver. He added that faculty

members should be given opportunities to visit industry and be well versed in

fieldwork so that they can prepare students accordingly. The collaboration will bear

fruit in few years, he concluded confidently.

NED Professors and industry representatives called for more investment in the research sector

and a greater focus on innovation. Speakers also suggested area-specific university consortiums,

faculty capacity building and more collaboration between universities and oil and gas companies

so that enhanced professional opportunities are created for students. A need for more such

interactive symposiums was highlighted while utilization of university laboratories for training

the industry staff, updating the syllabus in consensus with the industry stakeholders and ample

exposure of field work to the students were few other points raised at the sessions.

6.3 Recommendations

Based on the deliberations by the panellists and responses from the participants the following

recommendations of the symposium were established:

1. Holding of symposiums / seminars / conferences such as this one by PPEPCA/MPCL in

Collaboration with NED University was highly appreciated and it was suggested that

such seminars should also be held in future.

2. To move forward, short and long term tangible time-lined goals pertaining academia-

industry collaboration needs to be identified / chalked out.

3. E&P Companies should arrange short duration orientation visits / programme for the

faculty members and selected students at their field sites. That will, exposure the

participants practical aspects of drilling and to new technologies. Efforts of MPCL /

PPL in this regards were highly appreciated.

4. E&P companies should provide more opportunities to the students for internships at

their field locations.

5. To strengthen the bondage between industry and academia PPEPCA should facilitate

assigning of small research projects to academic institutions on a limited scale.

6. E&P Companies should consider utilization of Universities laboratory facilities for

training of their staff and for R&D purposes.

7. For sustained relationship between industry and academia occasional participation of

university representatives in PPEPCA’s HRM Committee may be considered.

6.4 Closing Remarks

The MD/CEO of MPCL, Lt Gen Raza Muhammad Khan (Retd) thanked the

PPEPCA and NED University for organizing this symposium. He assured that

PPEPCA’s Committee on HRM will continue to contribute in bridging the gap

between the industry and the Academia and the industry will fulfil its

obligations in facilitating Academia to produce quality education. He showed

his confidence that together with more effective role of Industry and the

Academia the challenges including the recent energy crises in the country can

be resolved.

6.5 Vote of Thanks

Professor Sarosh Lodi, Dean (CEA&BME), thanked PPEPCA, MD/CEO of

MPCL, PPL, KUFPEC and senior executives of other participating

companies for their participation and contributions. He also thanked all the

speakers, delegates from the universities for making this symposium a

success through their participation. Professor Lodi also acknowledged the

organizers, faculty, students & staff of Department of Petroleum Engineering,

and NED University for their untiring efforts to make this event a success. He

hoped that in future similar events will be conducted again by PPEPCA at

NED University.

7. LUNCH & VISIT TO PETROLEUM ENGINEERING LABORATORIES

The event was wrapped up at the delicious lunch served to all participants. After the lunch the

senior executive members of MPCL, Head of Departments, faculty members and students from

other participating universities visited the Petroleum Engineering laboratories of the department

of Petroleum Engineering.

8. MEDIA COVERAGE.

Both print and electronic media were invited for coverage of the event. A press release was also
