FALL 2014 ONE CALL FOR ALL WWW.ONECALLFORALL.ORG PAGE 3

By Cecilia Garza

For Bainbridge Islanders, October doesn’t just welcome fall.

It’s the beginning of red envelope season.

Over the last several years, One Call for All has raised more than $1 million in support of community philanthropy by distributing donations to nonprofit organizations around Bainbridge Island.

“We want to do better than last year,”

said Bruce Weiland, president for One Call for All.

“And most importantly we want to have more people participating.”

Earlier this month, more than 100 volunteers gathered at the Bainbridge Island Filipino-American Hall to stuff 14,000 red envelopes.

And the envelopes have been sent out Bainbridge mailboxes.

In each one, residents will find a list of 96 nonprofits they can select from to make donations.

It is the highest number of One Call-supported organizations yet, Weiland said, and also an impressive number for any community with 25,000 residents.

One Call for All adds groups to its growing list based whether the nonprofit has tax-exempt status, good standing with the IRS and the state and if it serves

the community in some way.Organizations range from health and

human services to arts and humanities.Environmental groups join education

and emergency services organizations on the list also.

These include nonprofits like the Madrona School, IslandWood and Hope House of Bainbridge.

“There are dozens and dozens of little groups that work on roller hockey for kids, counseling for high school students, services for pets and animals,” Weiland explained.

“You will find dozens of things that excite you and make you want to give.”

One Call for All began 54 years ago and has since become an island tradition.

It started with a small group of community members walking door-to-door. The group of citizens asked residents to support the community by giving back to the nonprofits that helped raise it.

They handed out red envelopes and wrote names of nonprofit organizations down in a ledger book, Weiland explained.

It has grown to be the largest philanthropy campaign on Bainbridge

Island.Through One Call for All, residents

can choose directly donate to particular nonprofit groups. They can also opt to give to the One Call for All general fund, which is distributed evenly to the entire list of organizations.

One Call for All distributes 100 percent of the donation directly toward the residents’ selected groups. No operating costs are covered through the donations unless a donator designates an amount to One Call for All itself.

“We really hope that people will recognize that giving to one organization is great, but giving through One Call raises the philanthropy consciousness on Bainbridge Island,” Weiland said.

Red envelope season makes its way to Bainbridge mailboxesOne Call for All list grows to include 96 nonprofits

Something special happens when a group of people sings together—and it’s more than just the lovely harmonies or

pleasing tempos. “There is a synchronicity that happens with

singers,” said Stephanie Harris, managing director of Bainbridge Chorale. “Research has shown that when people sing together, their breaths and heartbeats synch as one, and they become a group that completely transcends the individual.”

Harris believes this is one of the reasons choral singing evokes such a strong emotional reaction from the audience.

“Great music reaches into your heart and shares its transcending power,” she said.

And thanks to Bainbridge Chorale, great music has been performed on the Island since 1971. The group has grown steadily, and now boasts an adult chorus of 125 members. Over the years, the non-profit group expanded its repertoire to include a Young Singers program for children in grades 1-8, and the

newly formed Olympic Girls’ Choir for grades 5-8, which focuses on vocal development and classical training.

Harris describes Bainbridge Chorale as an

avenue where the community can be carried to another time and place through the power of music, and it offers many opportunities

throughout the year to experience the glory of chorus music.

If you’re the sit-and-listen type, you might enjoy one of the concerts p e r f o r m e d each winter and spring. These are the times when the chorus s h o w c a s e s what they’ve been rehearsing and perfecting for months.

Or if you’re the type of person who just can’t keep silent when music is performed, you might enjoy one of the Chorale’s outreach concerts: Community Caroling and Summer Sings. These are fine times to exercise your vocal cords, experience singing under the guidance of choir director Michael Austin Miller and add your voice to the group.

“The sing-a-longs are open to anyone who wants to come and sing great music,” Harris said. “It’s quite amazing how well it comes

together.”The Chorale’s annual performance (and

sing-along) of George Frideric H a n d e l ’ s “ M e s s i a h ” brings people “out of the w o o d w o r k , ” and some

participants even bring their own

dog-eared copy of the sheet music from their

high school or college days. For this concert, the Chorale hires professionals to sing the solos.

“We mainly do that so people can have a break between the choruses, as the Messiah is fun to sing, but very vocally challenging,” Harris said.

The money received from

One Call for All is something the Chorale counts on—and it helps keep its doors open and the music flowing. “It’s a very stable source of money for us and the mainstay of our funding. We are truly appreciative of what we receive,” Harris said.

For Chorale members like Patty Schwartz, the group provides an outlet for a lifelong hobby. Schwartz joined the Chorale in 1993 and since then, she’s only missed one concert. The Chorale is a wonderful place for her to stretch herself musically, as well as provide a valuable social and community outlet.

“The Chorale has a real passion for music and we believe in sharing it with the community,” Schwartz said. “It’s so fun to perform and often gives me head-to-toe goose bumps.”

Harris encourages Islanders to see, er—listen, for themselves. “Come open yourself up to the experience,” she said.

“Great music reaches into your heart and shares its transcending

power,”- Stephanie Harris,

managing director of Bainbridge Chorale

If a modern-day Norman Rockwell wanted to paint a quintessential slice of Island

life, the artist would need to look no further than the Bainbridge Roller Hockey rink on a summer Saturday.

The rink’s perimeter is strewn with hand-written posters of encouragement. Kids glide by, looking like a cross between football players and figure skaters. Nicknames like “Syd the Kid” and “Ghost” are stitched to jerseys. Game days are festive yet low-key.

“We’re just out here to have fun and fun is what we’re all about,” said league president Dawn Janow.

Roller Hockey on Bainbridge got its start in 1996 when an out-of-state family moved to the Island and the two sons were disappointed to learn there wasn’t a local hockey team.

“The story goes that the mom told her boys, ‘Don’t worry, I’ll make hockey happen on Bainbridge.’ And it was this woman’s d e t e r m i n a t i o n and strength that started the program,” Janow said.

This popular league now attracts kids between the ages of 7 and 18 and last year 165 youth participated in the 2014 season, which runs May through July. Players are divided into three divisions based on age and teams created within the divisions play each other. There is no off-Island play and all games take place on Saturdays at the Battlepoint rink.

Janow said the co-ed league is welcoming to all and describes the atmosphere as friendly, supportive and “not super competitive”. Coaches try their best to give players equal time on the rink—sometimes even using a stopwatch to keep track. And if the end of the season approaches and a player has yet to score, all efforts are made

to give the puck to him or her—thus increasing

the chance of a goal. And when

the player finally does bank one into the net, the entire place erupts, no matter which

side you’re on. “Some kids who

get spit-out of other sports for whatever

reason, find a place here. And it doesn’t matter if the player knows how to skate, it doesn’t take long to learn,” Janow said. A few early-season skating clinics help keep the newbies from hugging the rails, and gets them into the action of the game. And once bitten by the roller hockey bug, most players

stick with it until they age out of the league.

Funds donated to Bainbridge Roller Hockey through One Call for All help pay for equipment,

maintain the rink, and provide scholarships. No one is ever turned away due to financial hardships.

Last year Janow received a phone call from a young girl who was interested in playing. “She said she didn’t have any equipment or money to pay for registration, but this 11 year old girl took the initiative to call me and inquire about the program and I found that remarkable!”

Ruark Bohonos has been a part of the local hockey scene for nine years.

Now the high school junior is a multifaceted member as a player, coach and referee.

“I really like how the focus is all around having fun and not necessarily about winning,” Bohonos said. “At the end of the day, everyone is there to have a good time.”

A few years ago, life was rough sailing for Greg Poels. The biologist had been laid-off from his job and, try as he might, he

couldn’t find steady employment. Adding to his stress was the unaffordable increase in his rent after the house he had lived in for 12 years sold to new owners. His savings account was quickly depleting and he struggled to find another rental within his budget.

“I was scared to death and had no idea where I was going to live,” Poels said.

On the suggestion of a friend he contacted Housing Resources Board (HRB), and learned of a low-income housing development in the works. Lo and behold!—Poels qualified to become a first-time homeowner at Ferncliff Village.

Ferncliff Village is a community land trust development, meaning that the homeowners don’t own the land their home sits on—but they do own the building. They lease the land from HRB and the result is a much more affordable housing price.

Ferncliff Village was HRB’s first foray with a homeownership program and Executive Director Mark Blatter said he’s thrilled with the results. The homes are thoughtfully built with quality materials and are within an easy walk to downtown and the ferry. The demand was

definitely there, as all 24 are occupied. For residents like Poel, homeownership

seemed like something completely out of his reach, and he gets choked up remembering when he received the keys to his front door.

“I just wanted to sit down and cry,” he said. “I knew my life was going to be OK. I had a place to live and I no longer had to worry about living on the street.”

Founded 25 years ago, HRB’s goal is to provide and maintain affordable housing on Bainbridge Island. Local residents created the non-profit in response to sky-rocketing real estate costs that were forcing a segment of the population off the island. And the issue continues today—despite what glossy real estate ads suggest—not everyone on Bainbridge Island is a high-income earner. According to Blatter, one-quarter of Island households earn $75,000 or less.

“Teachers, police officers, service workers—all those that make Bainbridge Island so great—they struggle to live in the very community where they work,” Blatter said. “It’s a benefit to the entire Island to have a fully diverse community.”

Besides Ferncliff Village, HRB manages other programs as well like its HomeShare program which connects homeowners who have a spare bedroom to roommates needing a place to rent.

“HomeShare is an excellent way to increase the supply of affordable housing,” Blatter said. “And it benefits the homeowner as well. The roommate often helps with chores and provides companionship. We basically are roommate matchmakers.” HRB screens applicants and helps facilitate connections, but the rest of the agreement is left to the homeowner and renter.

For island residents who need modifications to their homes—hand rails installed and doorways widened to accommodate a wheelchair—HRB’s Independent Living Program provides assistance in creating functional living environments. This helps allow elderly and disabled people remain

safely in their existing homes. HRB also manages 90 rental units

on the island. These affordable housing options help generate rental income that, in turn, provides funding for HRB’s other programs.

“We do a lot of things with a relatively small staff and small budget,” Blatter said. “Because we are trying to respond in new ways to local housing needs, there will always be a gap between what we can self-finance and what we need. Funds raised through One Call for All help fill the gap. It provides unrestricted dollars that we can put towards the greatest need.”

Back inside Poels’ home, the afternoon sun streams through the windows and laughter of neighborhood children drifts through the open back door.

“Moving here took so much stress off of me,” Poels said, exhaling a long, drawn-out breath. “I could finally breathe again.”

And that gives a whole new meaning to “Home Sweet Home.”

Q: For those new to the area, can you explain the annual Red Envelope campaign?

A: One Call for All (OCFA) started back in 1962 as a solution to fundraising fatigue. Instead of each non-profit sending out its own individual fundraising letter, OCFA sends out one mailing that includes information about area non-profits. From there, donors decide which organizations to support.

Q: Are there different styles of

giving?A: Absolutely! Some people will

give— say $5— to each of the non-profits listed (this year there are 96 participating in the campaign),

and then there are some who request their donation be divided equally between four selected organizations. And then there are those who choose to support only one non-profit. It doesn’t matter the style of giving. The gift is always appreciated!

Q: What if a donor sends in money, but doesn’t designate how the funds should be appropriated?

A: Unspecified funds are put into a community pool, which is divided by shares. For each donation of $20 or more, a non-profit is granted one share of the community pool. The community pool is divvied up based on the number of shares a non-profit receives. It’s important to note that shares are based on unique supporters, not dollar amount raised. For example, XYZ receives a total of $1,000 from 50 people who each donated $20. Those 50 people translate into 50 shares for XYZ. If ABC receives $1,000 from one person, ABC has only one share of the community pool.

Q: Does OCFA take a percentage of the money donated?

A: No! Not at all. Like every other non-profit, we use this campaign as an important fundraising tool, and

just like all the organizations, people have to select our box in order for us to receive their specified donations.

Q: Can any local non-profit take part in OCFA?

A: There are three benchmarks non-profits need to reach: 1. They need to serve Bainbridge Island residents. 2. They need to be in good standing with the Internal Revenue Service. 3.To be included in the community pool, the non-profit needs to have an office located on Bainbridge Island.

Q: How much was raised last year? What’s the goal for this year?

A: Last year 1,461 households donated more than $1.07 million through OCFA. This year’s goal is to increase Island-wide participation. We would love for OCFA to become a giving tradition for families and be seen as a time to gather around, read the descriptions of the non-profits, and decide which ones to support.

Q: What’s the deal with the thermometers?

A: Ha! The five sandwich boards scattered around the Island show OCFA’s progress. As donations flow in, and with the help of red duct-tape, I raise the thermometers so the community can visually witness the progress.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about the Red Envelope Campaign?

A: There is something very old-school that I love. In this digital age, it’s so nice to receive an actual letter in the mail.

Q: Anything else we should know?

A: It would be difficult for a person to live on Bainbridge, and not be touched by the works from these non-profits. We hope Islanders show their gratitude for the great things these organizations do by making a generous donation this year.

When you walk on our local beaches during low tide, you’re visiting

habitat and species that Puget Sound Restoration Fund (PSRF) is trying to restore. The oyster shells that crunch under our feet and the kelp that dances like ribbon, all play important roles in keeping Puget Sound healthy.

“Our core mission is to rebuild marine habitat and species - and to renew our connection to these resources so we have a strong incentive for maintaining the health of our shorelines and ecosystem,” said Betsy Peabody, PSRF founder and executive director.

Anyone who has taken high school science knows how delicately connected organisms are to each other--if one thing gets out of balance, it wrecks havoc on other species.

Peabody points to the fish kills that have happened in the Hood Canal. In these cases too many nutrients, such as fertilizer, enter the water and cause algae to grow out of control. This spike

overwhelms the natural capacity of the ecosystem. Oysters, which act as water filters, aren’t able to keep up with the demand during large algae blooms. When the algae’s lifecycle ends and begins to decompose, carbon dioxide is released into the water stripping valuable oxygen for fish. This results in low oxygen levels, which leads to fish dying.

Phew. See how it’s all connected?

PSRF began in 1997 and, although it has always been based on Bainbridge Island, it initially focused its efforts on other areas of Puget Sound. However, in 2010, they added some locally based projects such as its Port Madison Community Shellfish Farm.

The shellfish farm is located on the northern part of the Island, on the Bloedel Reserve tidelines. Growing shellfish not only provides a good local food source, it aids water filtration — a single oyster can filter 20 gallons of water a day. Just like a land-based farm, the shellfish farm sells what they harvest, allowing

people to enjoy seafood grown locally and further connecting people to the Sound.

PSRF has also helped set up smaller shellfish “gardens” around the Island. More than

It’s 9 a.m. on a Saturday morning and more than two hundred people stream into the commons at Bainbridge High School.

What roused people from their comfy beds so early on a weekend morning? The packed house isn’t there for a rock concert, or a reading by a best-selling author. Instead, they’ve come to participate in one of the Bainbridge Healthy Youth Summits—a time for adults and youth to discuss social and academic issues facing local children.

“Adults are hungry for an opportunity

to have honest conversations with youth and to learn what is really going on in our community,” said Julie Miller, board member

for Raising Resilience, one of the community organizations responsible for the summits.

Navigating school and social pressures can be challenging for teens and parents. Raising Resilience opens the dialog and helps facilitate important discussions.

Since 2003, Raising Resilience (formerly the Just Know Coalition) has been educating and supporting local parents. It offers workshops, lecturers and monthly meetings, thanks in part to funds raised through One Call for All. At these events, adults and youth make connections and discuss pressing issues.

“One thing that became clear at the Youth

Summits is that children want to be seen for not only what they achieve, but be seen for the fullness of who they are,” said Raising Resilience Board President Cezanne Allen. “Children aren’t just test scores and grade point averages.”

That message was heard loud and clear through open dialog facilitated by parenting experts. Tough conversations were had about the current culture and the “super teen” expectations that are often felt. Raising Resilience hopes to create a culture where the complete child is celebrated and honored.

“We want people on Bainbridge to know what leads to happiness, because a lot of what we are pressuring our children to accomplish—getting into an Ivy League school for example—is our attempt to help them lead a happy life. But is that the only way?” Allen said.

So they are turning to the experts, University of California at Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center. Beginning in February, local islanders can participate in a free 10-week online course that explores The Science of Happiness. This seminar can be accessed from home, and

supplemented with community gatherings. Led by two renowned experts on positive psychology, the course will cover topics such as mindfulness, gratitude and the link between happiness and strong social connections.

Raising Resilience hopes that parents, teens, grandparents, educators, neighbors—really everyone on Bainbridge Island—will take the course and learn the scientific-based findings on what it takes to be achieve true happiness.

The popular Community Conversations facilitated through Raising Resilience will also continue this year. These intimate discussions allow parents the opportunity to take off “The Perfect Parent Vest”—Allen’s term for pretending everything is A-OK. In order to reach this deeper level, facilitators take off their own “vests” and are honest about issues facing their families. This has resulted in heart-felt discussions in hopes of reshaping how a successful child is defined.

“I think there are longings in all of us to make the world a better place for our children,” Allen said. “And Raising Resilience wants to be a catalyst and help trail-blaze a new path for island families.”

150 Bainbridge tidelands owners have planted their own gardens to grow a variety of clams, mussels and oysters. And like their land-based cousins, these gardens require new “starts” each year. This keeps the cycle going, and adds new shellfish to replace the ones harvested.

“Shellfish have long been a food source for people living along the shores of the Salish sea,” Peabody said. “When we ingest shellfish from local waters, we are literally ingesting this place.”

It is that strong connection that Peabody hopes helps hammer home the importance of maintaining a healthy environment. Because if you’re eating straight from the Sound, you might think twice about the role you play in polluting the water.

Shellfish farming is one project PSRF is using to try and improve

the Sound’s water quality, but not the only project on its docket. The list is long, and the projects many, but the commitment is always the same: to establish a clean and healthy Sound that is productive, full of life and capable of sustaining us. One Call for All helps PSRF continue its project-based approach and tackle issues that are as close as the nearest shore.

Sitting in Peadbody’s office, surrounded by baskets of oyster shells, artwork created from seaweed and even a jar of pickled kelp, it’s obvious that the Sound is at the forefront of PSRF.

“The marine system is what I’m attuned to—and to the species and habitats that help anchor the health of an ecosystem,” she said. “We are working on projects that other organizations aren’t focusing on, and we’ve really developed our niche.”

In the summer of 1942, a dedicated group of citizens saw the need for an emergency response team on Bainbridge Island. In November of 1942, our rst re district meeting was attended by 16 volunteer

remen, and by 1946, our ambulance service consisted of a 1936 Buick and a

group of dedicated American Legionnaire drivers. From these humble beginnings,

our organization has grown enormously, but we have never lost our commitment to

volunteerism and serving the community in which we live. Our mission is to serve

Bainbridge Island by providing emergency response, training, and equipment to the

community. We accomplish this mission by serving as active volunteer re ghters

and Emergency Medical Technicians, by hosting educational events such as Fun Fair

and Pancake Breakfast, by offering CPR and AED training to the community, and by

purchasing equipment that we donate to the Bainbridge Island Fire Department.

Your contributions have allowed us to add full extrication equipment to re engines,

replace all of our CPR Manikins, purchase advanced airway management tools,

send two or more volunteer re ghters to the Washington State Fire Training

Academy each year, and much more. When you donate to the Bainbridge Island

Volunteer Fire ghters Association, you are directly helping to ensure top-tier

emergency services in your community.

We are deeply grateful for your continued support over the years, and

we are honored to carry on the tradition of service that was begun all those

decades ago.
