Wide-Eyed Over, Red- Eyed Coming Home by Brent Earl Chapman Note: This is a book written by Newcomer Brent Chapman and edited by his wife, Margo.

Interview questions and article were submitted by Jody Andes

Brent Chapman wrote this book because when he went for PTSD treatment after his military experience during the Vietnam War, it was his assignment to join a writer’s group. The book is organized the way he wanted to write it – the way it came out of his head. In his group, they talked about their experiences and then went home and wrote them down. The book has a variety of interesting literary methods used; sometimes it is poetry, sometimes the vehicle is through short story, etc.

The childhood stories of Brent’s family were included because he wanted everyone to know how he grew up. His dad was in the Navy and he always respected him. As a result, Brent joined the Navy after high school. He was assigned to serve in Vietnam as a Bos’uns mate [i.e. Boatswain’s mate] when he applied for Seaman Third Class.

After returning to the U.S. Brent married the wonderful Margo Chapman. They went on their first date, and he fell in love. He still loves her today. They have been through a lot including building a cabin with their own hands. It was something his dad and he always talked about.

Oasis Readers: Bill and Jody Andes are loving this book. She is reading it to Bill out loud. They average about a chapter a day. It is available through Amazon.com both as a paperback and a kindle-type version.

We all join in to say Thank-you to Brent and all Americans who have served our country.

City Creek has two hours of free parking and Alta Club will validate an additional hour. TRAX is a great alternative. Get off at City Center Station and walk east two blocks along South Temple.

Christmas Entertainment: Barbershop Quartet - Sweet Adelines International - Splendid!

Kim Blackwell, Tenor - Beth Bruce, Lead - Tori Postma, Baritone - Lynda Mills, Bass Splendid! Quartet has sung all kinds of music for a lifetime. We have sung barbershop for a combined total of over 100 years. Three of us are retired teachers, choral directors and grandmas. Our lovely tenor is still a working mom with a very busy young family. We love singing together and spending time sharing our gift of music with others. Today we are happy to join you to brighten your holiday season! Splendid! won 15th place at a competition in Las Vegas recently.

Please join us for our annual December Luncheon to celebrate the Holidays. Alta Club is a Salt Lake City historical icon with old -world ambience. As well as a delicious meal, we will have Holiday entertainment by the Sweet Adelines. Our Holiday donations support the

Community Resources Mardi Lessey is an exceptional Newcomer. After

retirement, she looked for volunteer opportunities and adventures. Mardi organized community events for the newly incorporated city of Cottonwood Heights. She set up drives to collect quilts for the first responders of the po-lice and fire departments to use on emergency calls. Mardi became the Charity Chair of the Quilters Holladay of the Utah Quilters Guild. She has done fundraising for the Road Home, Rescue Haven, the YWCA’s women’s shelters, Quilts of Valor for veterans and international organizations such as Fistula Foundation and an orphanage in Kenya.

Mardi started volunteering for Family Promise of Salt Lake by cooking, sewing and quilting. Newcomers have supported Family Promise through our club’s charitable giving. Mardi explained one of the rewards of her work by this anecdote. “I like to provide quilts for babies. A couple of years ago, a young pregnant woman was one of the residents to move into Wasatch. I made a quilt for the unborn baby only knowing that she would arrive at any time. I later learned that when the baby arrived she was to be placed for adoption.” The young mother said: ‘Thank you for the quilt. It is the one thing that she can take with her to know that she was very loved.’“

Mardi is truly inspirational and Newcomers is lucky to have her. In this spirit of giving, please remember that Newcomers are urged to donate to the two charities chosen by the General Board.

The Utah Food Bank does great work in stretching dollars. The YWCA shelters women and children fleeing abuse. You can make checks to the Utah Food Bank and the YWCA Women’s Shelter. The donations are tax deductible. Bring donations to the Christmas luncheon or mail to Lea Cotter,4674 Montego, Salt Lake City, UT 84117 by December 12, 2016. Happy Holidays.
