SPRING INTO LAWN AND GARDEN MAINTENANCE Lawns should be rejuvenated this month. It's time to top dress, feed and apply a wetting agent such as Saturaid to help hold water to the roots and water the lawn with a Seasol solution to stimulate a strong healthy root system. Popular Questions for the Spring Season Q: When do I fertilise my established lawn? A: Fertiliser should be applied early spring, early summer and mid-autumn. Q: Should I top-dress my lawn? A: Top dressing is an application that can correct any unevenness in a lawn due to uneven ground. However it is also a great way of adding nutrients to an established lawn. If top dressing is required, it should only be done in late spring or early summer with a sandy loam soil and no more than 10mm should be applied per top dressing. The tips of the blades of grass should still be visible. If the lawn is compacted aerate with a garden fork before top dressing. An alternative to top dressing can quite often be a low mowing combined with fertilizing and deep watering in spring to achieve the same results and is easier and cheaper. In the garden, help spring along, with a light application of organic fertiliser such as Dynamic lifter for all plants, shrubs, and fruit/ ornamental trees. September is a great time to sow seeds and grow your own seedlings for your vegie patch. Or buy your seedlings and plant them now.

Things to look out for this month:

Snails when planting out new flower or vegie seedlings.

Azalea petal blight (if we have a wet spring) spray with a fungicide to stop flowers turning into a soggy mush, just when they should be looking their best

Citrus leaf miner on your citrus trees, spray with Pest Oil

Infestations of aphids on the new growth of roses, spray with Rose Guru

Prune hibiscus by one third this month

Keep an eye out for fruit fly on your citrus fruits, use a Trap to control these crop destroying pests

This month's water wise tip: Design lawns to be smaller - lawns are thirsty and also need a lot of fertiliser to look great. Wherever possible, use a sub-surface irrigation system that emits water directly to the roots, to avoid evaporation from the foliage on warm days. On garden beds, use drippers. These systems can reduce water use in the garden by up to 50%! Enjoy September gardening, it's good to get back outside after a very cold winter!
