Who fathered your running habit? Post your story at facebook.com/DFWRUNS!

Let me start by first apologizing to my mom as this issue’s feature is about all of our amazing Dash for Dad clients. So as we salute Fathers during the month of May, we do it with the upmost love to our Mom’s too. And with that I say Happy Mother’s Day to my mom, your mom and all the amazing mom’s that work for DFWRUNS.

Now back to business. As many of you know DFWRUNS opened its doors in August of 2008. One of the clients that helped get us going, and one of the father’s of running in Dallas, was Bob Wallace and his Run On! stores. Since then we have had the opportunity to work with Matt Lucas, son of another father of running in Dallas, Don Lucas, the founder of Luke’s Locker.

As we expanded our wings west DFWRUNS has also been lucky to work with Phil Zetnick, son of Don Zetnick and owner of The Runner Shop — the father of running in Arlington. Even farther west we have worked with the awesome father and son team, Jim and James Newsome, owners of the Fort Worth Running Company and fathers to the Fort Worth running community. And finally back to the east we have had the opportunity to work with Barrett Hopper as he has quickly become the father of running in Rockwall with the fast expansion of the Rockwall Running Center.

Continuing to grow we are managing or marketing Dash for Dad events to benefit ZERO the Project to End Prostate Cancer in amazing cities like Los Angeles, Austin, Atlanta and Washington DC.

WHO’S YOUR DADDY?Fathers of Running

CATCH US!(IF YOU CAN)

Being the father of DFWRUNS, it amazes me as I look back to see how much we have grown. We say it often, look at the DFW in our name like the airport code. We are screaming On Your Left! all across the USA.

Speaking of spreading your wings across the USA and of fathers of running, we had the pleasure of joining with Dean Karnazes on the Central Market Thrill of the Grill last month. The man runs a marathon before breakfast and then makes breakfast for his two kids. Now that is a father of running.

My father of running is Paul Matthaei. What? You’ve never heard of him? He has 662 friends on facebook so one of you has to know him. All kidding aside Paul is not a famous runner… to you. But to me he is. When people ask me how I got started running, I mention his name and tell the story. You see, he was the guy that inspired me to start running. Twice a week he would rumble down the KATY trail with me huffing and puffing behind him. As he heard my tennis shoes clapping on the pavement, (yes shoes actually meant for tennis), he told me to go to a running store and get fit in running shoes. He was the guy who inspired me to enter my first 5K. Like a father teaching his son to shave.

Since those days I have grown up as a runner and left the “nest” that Paul helped to build. Now I don’t have children but I do hope that I have fathered a few runners along the way, much the same way Paul fathered me. I am sure many of you have your own father’s of running and I encourage you to share those stories on the DFWRUNS Facebook page. Who knows maybe we will give away a cool prize for the story that generates the most LIKES.

he Senate first passed a resolution designating May as National Military Appreciation Month in May of 1999. This means that for the entire month, Americans are

encouraged to recognize and honor U.S. service members during this month. Some ways you can take part and recognize your service men and women are;

• Fly the flag on your home, car or business… or your legs?

• Visit a veteran’s hospital, or send notes and cards to hospitalized vets.

• REGISTER for: The Original Mud Run Houston or The Patiriot Half Marathon!

THE ORIGINAL MUDRUNLast month’s DFW

Mud Run was again the primary annual fund raiser supporting the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex Young Marines. This youth education and service program for boys and girls, (ages 8 through high school) promotes mental, moral, and physical develop-ment while focusing on character build-ing, leadership, and promoting a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. The Young Marines is the focal point for the U.S. Marine Corps’ youth Drug Demand Reduction efforts and they’re also a prominent presence along the entire course of The Original Mud Run in Fort Worth. Participants of the DFW Mud Run are motivated every spring and fall by these fine young kids cheering them on.Kids Course

too! As race day falls be-tween Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, we say for-get breakfast in bed this year. Instead, get your little additions up and out to our KIDS COURSE where they can re-ally make mom and dad proud! Designed for the average 8 Year Old… the “little version” of The Original Mud Run can accommodate kids ages 3 to 12. It contains 6-8 obstacles none of which require swimming or any height of note. It is approximately 2k and parents are welcome to run alongside their children. Volunteers will assist when needed. There are no winner placing… everyone is a winner for competing (even though their race is timed and your child will receive a timing chip), and no one will get in trouble for being muddy!

Children will receive a t-shirt, wrist band and they are welcome to clean up in the fire truck wash area after their race. How better to spend quality time with mom & dad and be a part of your local military then to experience first-hand a boot-camp style course designed by the Marines? After all, the Original Mud Run is a combination of regular citizens, Civil Servants, company teams, colleges and some military personnel.

REGISTER NOW for Mud Run Houston! Some waves are still open but will sell out!

PATRIOT HALF MARATHONMemorial Day, which falls on the last Monday of May,

honors the men and women who died while serving in the American military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. But on May 28, 2012 you could celebrate our veterans by running an awe-some race in Rockwall, Texas and then finish your salute with a DFWRUNS after-party! Special bib stickers will identify our military veterans during the event. All entrants will receive a gender-specific tech shirt and overall winners will receive prize money!

REGISTER NOW and celebrate our men and women who have served us so valiantly!

s usual, Mother’s Day has snuck up on you, hasn’t it. Well, before the same happens next month, here’s your reminder that Father’s Day is just a couple paces away. That’s why we’re talking about dads in

our May issue. Our goal is not only to help you to keep up, but to help our client work toward a world free of prostate cancer.

The Great Prostate Cancer Challenge & Dash For Dad Series is hitting 34 cities across the U.S. in 2012 — our next stop, Albequerque, NM on May 12. DFWRUNS’ proven track record in Kansas City, Chicago, New Jersey and Connecticut has us running promotions & marketing, selling sponsorship opportunities, securing city permits, coning courses, and rallying volunteer groups in even more cities than last year!

Learn more about this national race series and Zero, The Project to End Prostate Cancer by visiting GreatProstateCancerChallenge.com. While there, dash to the map showing when America’s Premier Men’s Health Event Series will be in your city. Dallas area dads can join USMD Prostate Cancer Center and Urology Associates of North Texas on September 22 in Arlington and Austin athletes can also show dad they care by getting in on the October 27 race now.

Here’s another tip; Dad doesn’t need another tie. This Father’s Day, give dad the gift of tying up laces instead! Register yourself or your dad for a year of good health. Do it for dad. Run or walk it with him. Come out to see how DFWRUNS utilizes the DFW in its name like the airport code and brings good health and quality racing to multiple cities across the US.

ast month, Ultramarathon Man, Dean Karnazes joined DFWRUNS at the Thrill of the Grill 5K. He came dressed for the occasion in his Greek Gods Yogurt

branded Toga making our Plano ISD Education Founda-tion fundraiser promotion a hit. Runners who signed up for our exclusive Toga Division contributed $50 each to the beneficiary and in return received an autographed copy of Dean’s new book, a photo with Dean, and the thrill of running with him.

Here’s some of the participants’ compliments to the chefs!“So cool that Dean was there. What an inspiration!

Toga Runner: “There should be a LOVE option on Facebook for moments like this. I will be back next year and the year after and the year after.”

“The new 5K course is awesome…The Thrill of the Grill event has a finish line festival that’s better than a lot of marathon expos with plenty of swag and a great breakfast! This is definitely a 5K worth doing that I’ll be back for year after year. Central Market and DFW Runs totally rocked this race.”

“What an incredible event!”

“Great race that was well organized!”

“Well done! Had a great time. Especially liked the wide course at the begin-ning... Good vendors. Loved coming in and live music already going.”

“One of my favorite races this year! Can we do it again next week?”

“Very well organized and loved seeing all the dogs.”

Based on these Facebook fan comments alone, the 4th Annual Central Market Thrill of the Grill 5K was a huge success. But did you know that out of the 1,800+ runners who participated, one-hundred fifty were from Plano ISD’s Haun Elementary School.

All schools in the Plano District were invited to compete in rallying the most students and faculty to come out and run. What runner doesn’t thrive on a little competition? In the end, Haun Elementary picked up the pace and won a ton of Central Market gift cards — more importantly they helped their school families become more healthy and active.

A lot of effort goes into getting 150 people to partici-pate in a race. Haun’s great faculty and parents used lots of creative ways to get participants to commit to the Thrill of the Grill race. They sent out school-wide emails, started a jogging program with special incentives, made unique t-shirts, and advertised throughout the daily carpool lines. Due to these efforts, Haun Elementary won the contest and enjoyed a great day of family fun. DFWRUNS congratulates their great team!

She’s the news kid on the blocks! She’s started running — with her head up and her eyes on the horizon. She’s growing as a writer and she’s your fresh look at running. She’s 12 year old, Abby Werner and she’ll be highlighting many of our 2012 race clients each month.

4TH ANNUAL CENTRAL MARKET THRILL OF THE GRILL 5K RECAPBy Abby Werner

y first 5k was the 4th Annual Central Market Thrill of the Grill 5k last month — April 21st. The night before I was so nervous. I was worried that I would be the last one to finish!

Before the race started I walked around looking at different booths and sampling granola bars, Greek yogurt, and honey, trying to calm my nerves. My bib number read 1803 and I was proud of it. My goal time was some-where around the thirty minute range, but I didn’t really know what to expect. My dad ran in it too, but I breezed by him less than ten seconds into the race. I kept on pushing myself harder and harder to keep on running even when I obtained that aching stitch on my right side. I was able to continue on with an even pace without stopping to walk right until the halfway mark, which is where the hydration center was located. After a quick drink I power-walked and ran on and off for the rest of the event.

Throughout the race I saw about 20 dogs, but probably the most memorable thing I saw was a mother and daughter who had corresponding t-shirts running together. The mother’s t-shirt said “cheer on my daughter it’s her first 5k” with an arrow pointing at her daughter, and the daughter’s t-shirt said “cheer on my mother it’s her first 5k” with an arrow pointing at her mother. But the thing that surprised me the most were the amount of little kids that were there, a lot of them looked about five to eight year old!

It felt really good when I reached the finish line — it felt even better to know that I wasn’t the last one to finish either. My chip showed that I had finished in 32:03. I was so excited! I hope to continue improving, so my new goal is to finish a 5k in 25 minutes within the next month — think I can do it? Well we’ll just see!

THE QUICK ON ABBY Currently a sixth grader whose interest in writing started back in the first grade, and competitive swimmer at Mansfield Aquatic Club, Abby is preparing for Track & Field next year by moving her training over to the asphalt.

Doc in the Box by Holly Johnson, M.D.

irst of all, let me say that I am a real doctor… I don’t just play one on TV! I grew up in the cornstalks of Indiana riding my purple bicycle with a floral-

covered banana seat, playing Atari, watching late-night Love Boat, and studying my tush off in order to one day become a physician. After high school, I moved to India-napolis and majored in biology at Butler University (go Bulldogs!) and then graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine. Eventually I outgrew the cornstalks and flew south to Orlando where I stayed awake for three years straight during my family practice residency at Florida Hospital. Now I go to work at one of the best jobs in the world at an urgent care center where I take care of anything from ear wax and sprained ankles to asthma flare-ups and heart attacks. (By the way,

if you are having chest pain, don’t meander into your local walk-in medical clinic, please call 911!)

Second of all, here’s my running story… I grew up rid-ing that ridiculously girly-bike, playing volleyball, and doing aerobics in spandex; I never had the desire to run like the wind until I landed in O-Town. I was 32 years old, post-residency, in

a job that I disliked, out of shape (after not sleeping or exercising for three years straight), feeling blue, and had high cholesterol when I finally caught the running bug. I knew I needed a change — I quit my job, laced up my first pair of Gel Cumulus ASICS, and hit the sidewalk. At first I could only run a quarter of a mile, but gradually I built up enough endurance, and the 5K became my run of choice.

But enough about me. Let’s talk about dads!

Hey, Dad! Know Your Numbers!Father’s Day is just around the corner, and many of our

dads are ready to lace up and start running. We all know you just want to shape up in order to be around a lot longer to remind us kids to sit up straight and not talk with food in our mouths. Well, we want you around a lot longer too! So, you need to know your numbers: namely your blood pres-sure, cholesterol level, blood sugar, and BMI! Cardiovascu-lar disease accounts for nearly one half of all deaths in the US every year, and all of these numbers contribute to your risk level. Before you start any running program, especially if you are over the age of 50 or if you have a health condi-tion, you should check in with your personal physician.

The United States Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends that all adults over the age of 18 have their blood pressure measured. It should be checked at least every two years if it is less than 120/80 and at least every year if it is 120-139/80-89. If it is higher than 140/90 on two different days, you have hypertension, or high blood pressure, and should be under the care of a doc.

The USPSTF also recommends that men over the age of 35 have their cholesterol checked, or at age 20-35 if you are at an increased risk for cardiovascular disease (like if you have diabetes, you smoke, you have high blood pressure, or you are overweight). According to the Na-tional Cholesterol Education Program, once you hit your twenties, you should be screened every five years.

Mom (Colleen Musielak) started running with me when I was in high school. She was taking me to all of these local races so figured she might as well run in them too. She then got the running bug and completed her first marathon when I was senior in high school. Mom did her first Boston Marathon during my Freshmen year of college. We trained for my first marathon together (Chicago) and have continued to go on numerous trips together to run in races.

Running has definitely been something that bonds us. The quality time we get together because of it is one of the biggest reasons I like the sport so much.

She definitely inspires me as she is continually getting faster all the time and I have to work hard to beat her because let’s be honest, who wants to get beat by their mom in a race (which doesn’t always happen!).

— Lindsey Musielak

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!Doc in the Box, Cont.

The Task Force says that adults without any diabetes symptoms and a blood pressure over 135/80 should be screened for diabetes. Adults with symptoms such as increased thirst, increased urination, or increased appetite (for no reason), non-healing ulcers, frequent infections, or established vascular disease should all be immediately tested for diabetes.

Lastly, the Task Force recommends that clinicians screen all adult patients for obesity by calculating a BMI, or body mass index, which is defined as weight in kilo-grams divided by height in meters squared. A number equal to or over 30 kg/m2 equates to being obese. Weight loss has been shown time and time again to improve glu-cose metabolism, lipid levels, and blood pressure thereby decreasing the risk of a cardiac event over time.

So dads, get off the couch, get out of your cornfield, and stay away from the XXXL apron while manning the grill this year; see your doc, know your numbers, lace up your kicks, go slow at first, and start running from being a heart statistic and run instead to heart health!

Please Note: The info in this article is not a substitute for medical advice from your own PCP; you should always discuss exercise plans with your own doc; Dr. Johnson and DFWRUNS are not liable for a sprained ankle, skinned knee, or worse, if you happen to step off the curb while you were thinking about what this incredibly engaging piece of literature can do for your future pace time.

Nearly 900 participants from churches around Plano, TX woke up early and laced up to run the 5th annual Seton Soles 5K at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church on April 14!

Parishoners from St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Adat Chaverim Reform Congre-gation of Collin County, and West Plano Presbyterian Church were on hand to help raise money for the Msgr. Henry V. Petter Endowment Fund, which supports peace and justice initiatives in Collin County.

Through this year’s race, the fund was able to raise over $20,000. As a result, the fund announced it was able to distrib-ute its first $10,000 grant to Isabel’s Community Outreach, a non-profit school that helps educate men, women and children on how to become self-sufficient.

“I was very pleased to hear that the advisory board had chosen to award Isabel’s Community Outreach with our first grant. Since 2002, Isabel Garcia has been a tireless worker for those who need help here in Collin County. Over the last seven years, her efforts have made a college education possible for over 40 students,” said Tony Fleo, chairman of the Msgr. Henry V. Petter Endowment Fund Advisory Board.

Fleo also mentioned that April 13has been set as a tentative date for the 2013 race.

“We’re very happy to see so much support for this race within the communi-ty. We hope to see even more people next year, so make sure people know to mark their calendars!” said Fleo.

osemarie Coletto is a runner who’s taken on multiple distanced races around the Dallas/ Fort Worth arena, as well as on both the west

coast and east coast including the Boston Marathon. Based on her experience and certifications, DFWRUNS brought her on as one of our Corporate Recess coaches back in 2011. We quickly recognized her expanded skills and familiarity within the running community as an incredible asset so we bribed her into the corporate office with a trail of protein-pakced peanut butter cups, stocked our staff lounge freezer with chocolate peanut butter ice cream shipped in from Oberweis Dairy, and built her a treadmill desk. Now we’re bracing ourselves for the GREATness she is preparing for our national Great Prostate Cancer Challenge and Dash for Dads series throughout 2012.

Coletto is not only a mother of three, and a pace leader for Dallas Athletes Racing, but she’s also leading our group in creating sponsorship opportunities for the DFW and Nashville events all while race directing and gathering all sponsors in Connecticut and Albuquerque (to name just a few).

t was 4am in my quiet house almost 9 years ago. There was a blue glow softly spilling into the hallway from our home office PC screen. Pregnancy Insomnia. How could I sleep when I was only 2 months

from delivering but still hadn’t settled on the perfect stroller- simply one with a swivel front wheel that comes with the lock option upgrade, padded pushbar with extra water bottle holder, MP3 plug-in, pneumatic, all-terrain bicycle tires, lightweight steel frame, all weather fabric, adjust-able wind-blocking canopy and covered sunroof ratchets. Too much to ask? A mommy’s ride to sanity.

So there I sat, Googling every make and model ever reviewed, not yet knowing the heavy wear-pattern of raising children.

Over the years, I learned a lot about patience (or my lack thereof) and a mommy’s need for her own time-outs. I realized I am a better person, even a pretty good mother when I get my exercise, when I get my me time. Here’s my own motherly advice… hope it’s not too late! AGES 0-3 YRS: Research shows that 15 minutes sun exposure and fresh air can help improve rashes and restless sleep patterns! A little sunscreen combined with a hat and a stroller shade is the most effective way to keep your child safe from the sun for too long while out on a jog. A good jog stroller with a front-locking wheel is a must! This will get mom out for regular workouts, increasing patience, lowering stress, raising energy levels and simply forcing her to breathe. I dreamed my daughter would take in the beautiful sounds of nature, but she hated the stroller, so I resorted to a Disney mp3 player with child-safe volume control and loaded it with her favorite tunes instead of running to mine. She sat quietly listening for as long I could go! Free children’s stories are also easily downloadable from iTunes, or sites like storynory.com, or lightupyourbrain.com.

AGES 4-8 YRS: This era is a heavy push for mom and likely an embarrassing ride for kiddo. My kids’ school playground is just blocks from home and is situated right on their elementary-sized track. My monkeys can climb and slide under my supervision while I circle them like mamma eagle protecting the nest. Round and round I go, where I’ll stop — who cares! I’m just so glad to stay on track with my fitness goals! Try your local school playground after school or after dinner and get your workout in before dark. Demonstrate the importance and enjoy-ment of exercise to your children. Also check out Arbor Hills Nature Pre-serve park, Kidd Springs Park Pavilion, Bel-Aire Park Pavilion in Dallas or Central Park in Lewisville.

AGES 9-17 YRS: Sign the pink slips, sign the report cards, then sign the registration forms! Pick from some of our family friendly races like The Patriot Half, The Plano Balloon Festival, or Trek or Treat 5k, or Arbor Day Run (to name only a few) and race with your family! Make ‘em shake what their mamma gave ‘em! I can tell you from experience that our events have fun catered to everyone so you won’t even have to chase them with the wooden spoon to get them running.

In addition to these ideas of how to run like a mother, some structuring tips taught me how to parent like a runner — put one foot in front of the other, one step at a time. I began to build a better mamma with;

• Pre-Race Rituals: Start the day with a ritual as you would on race day. Stretch, hydrate, nutrition. Then, move forward. I go with the airline’s rule of “put on your own oxygen mask first so that you may then properly assist your children with theirs.”

• Breakdown the Day, not the Mamma: World-renowned runner and coach, Jeff Galloway, recommends breaking down a marathon distance into segments. So why try to race through all the activities of a day as a mom? Like distance running, if you try to cram it all in on one long list, you’ll hit a wall long before you’ve finished. Break your day down into segments. Plan out the first 3 hours of your day into one manageable group, then separate the next 3 hours and so on. Remember to schedule a tiny spot of time for yourself!

• 3 Deep Breaths: As when you run, controlled breathing is crucial. A poster in Shape magazine read, “When your mind starts to wander, take three deep breaths to bring your focus back to your goal.” This method of taking 3 deep breathes every day has become the focus of numerous blog sites as it is proving to many to be a healthy habit to form. It calms, it rejuvenates, and some even believe it prevents certain diseases. As a mom, this habit can mean the difference between a hug and a tantrum. Control comes from breathing!

So listen to your mother! Eat your vegetables, turn off the tv and go play outside!
