Background

. The Committee on Petitions received petition No 0900/2016 by F.K. (Austrian) on behalf of Food & Water Europe, bearing 732 signatures on taking action against a multinational oil company for climate change. The petitioner would like the European Parliament to take action against a multinational oil company for its climate change denial. The petitioner informed the Committee on Petition about an ongoing investigation in the United States.on the same issue.

. The petitioner also listed the adverse effects of climate change and its denial on environment, . public health, agriculture, water sources, tourism, energy policy or transport policy.

. .

Pending the petition additional information was provided; referring to positions of scientists assessingdi_ß considerable impact of specific industrial activities. on climate change and on the

· other hand; the expensive misinformation campaigns of industrial lobbyists to circulate the· · opposite views. These mechanisms possibly prevent governments, investors and individuals to change politics, from reducing critical industrial activities at an earlier stage.

. . I 'I. ?

The European Union is bound by the Paris Agreement adopted. by the Pàrties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change at the-Zl st Conference of Parties to the UNFCCC in December 2015. ·

Coordinators ofboth the ENVI a:n_d PET{ Committee decided to organise this Hearing, targeting the different aspects of Climate Change Denial and its dynamics 'among different actors in· · society. . , : ,·
