1) Help recruit buyers to the
auction by personally
contacting at least two local
businesses before the County
Fair and inviting them to
participate. Tell them you are a
4-H/FFA member, explain how
the auction works and invite
them to the auction. If they
have further questions, tell
them to contact the Extension
Office. Not sure what to say?

Participating in the 4-H
Premium Market Livestock
Auction can be daunting for
new members and families.
Originally designed as a way
for 4-H members to sell their
market animals to local
buyers, the auction has seen
many changes over the years.
As the auction has changed
with the times, it has also tried
to stay true to its core values.
The auction is a premium only
auction, meaning the ribbon is
sold, not the animal.
The purposes of the Premium
Market Livestock Auction are:
Encourage growth of the
entire county 4-H program
Encourage 4-H livestock
project participation
Maintain livestock
members in the county
Provide training in
livestock marketing
Encourage improved
livestock quality
Acquaint the public with
4-H projects.

2) Attend the pre-auction meetings.
All members or a family
representative are expected to

-County Fair Meeting—Thursday,
July 18, 2:00 pm

-H members) - Friday, 5-8 pm
3) Proper Care. You have the
responsibility of caring for the
animal until it leaves the fair.
3) Prepare yourself and your
animal for the auction. You
should wear neat attire; similar to
what you would wear at the show
ring. Animals should be clean,
groomed and presentable.
4) Be on time. The auction will
begin at 5:30pm on Saturday, July
20. You are responsible for being
at the arena with your animal when
it is your turn.
5) Thank your auction buyer. It is
the sellers responsibility to express
thanks to auction buyers. Buyers
offer generous donations and it is
important to recognize them for
taking the time to support us.
Examples could include
handwritten thank you cards and a
verbal thank you at the auction and
carcass picnic on Tuesday, July
23rd. Please attend the Carcass
Picnic with a dish or dessert. Be
prepared to set table and chairs to
offer your buyer a place to eat.

meat at market price.
Buyers are recognized in local newspapers.
Auction guests may also sponsor 4-H members for additional premium dollars
if they are unable to secure the winning
bid.
At least 20% of the premium
dollars will go to the 4-H program with
80% being paid to 4-H members.
The following is the range of weights and
prices of animals sold over the past few
years. Each year is different due to
market changes and to the growth and
quality of animals.
How much meat can I expect? The
percentage of meat I receive will de-
pend on the levels of fatness and
muscling. The chart below is based
upon the live weight.

awards, bleachers, show ring
improvements, barn improvements, wash
racks, sound system, dorm renovations
