The majority of the bulls on offer are the firstprogeny of the sires we bred as a result of theimportation of over 330 embryos from the four Hoffcows we purchased in America in 2006. These siresare having a huge impact in our herd breedingcattle with extra depth, thickness and capacitycombined with weight gaining ability and extraretail beef yield. "Since founding the stud in 1965our objectives have never changed" said co-principal Andrew Raff "While recognising thecarcase qualities of Angus cattle we have alwaysstrived to breed bulls that combine these inherentqualities with extra growth and yield comparableto any breed or composite. We believe this year'ssale bulls are a true testament to our objectives"Andrew Raff concluded.

Feature lot Raff Franco F153 is a true exampleof the performance that Raff Angus bulls arecapable of. At Beef Australia 2012 in RockhamptonRaff Franco F153 weighed 1050 kilograms at just22 months with a whole of life daily gain of 1.52kg/day. He measured a 130cm2 EMA with 9/7mmFat and 5.8 IMF%. Franco is a half brother to RaffEmpire E269 and was Reserve Senior ChampionBull to him at the show. Raff Franco F153 has beenused in the stud and his semen will be retained.Another young sire likely to attract a lot ofadmirers is Raff Fonzie F352. He is a sire withcomparable performance to Franco who at 17months weighed an impressive 826 kilograms witha 1.54 kg/day whole of life gain. His EMA was

117cm2 with a 6.4% IMF reading. Fonzie is anawesome 'beef ' bull who is sired by Raff Danny BoyD207 that sold for $18,000 as a yearling in 2009and is from our great show cow and Interbreedwinner Raff Blackbird D349. The lot 1 bull RaffEncore E110 is a proven stud sire and full Hoffembryo import. In June he weighed 1278 kg's andstood 63 inches tall. He has a number of sons

selling in the sale and will himself provide anopportunity to secure a direct son of our breedsensation Hoff Moriah 822 whose progeny haveattracted strong competition over the years. Hissire Leachman Prompter has also proven to be abreed legend. Encore is being sold only because we

have a younger flush brother retained - Raff FreddoF143.

Being Queensland's largest auction sale forAngus bulls the Raff Angus sale provides bothcommercial and stud breeders the opportunity tomake selections from bulls run in large contemporygroups that are of outcross genetics to themainstream Australian Angus. All raw datainformation is available with each lot also testedwith HD50k for Angus that measures 18 traits

including feed efficiency and tenderness throughthe advancement of genomic technology reported asMolicular Value Predictors {MVP's}. They are allsemen tested and breeding soundness evaluatedand tick fever 3 germ blooded, vaccinated for Pesti,7in1, Botulism, Vibrio and 3 day sickness.

The sale will be live on Auctions Pluscommencing at 12 noon. An 'Open Day' will be heldat "Mundibulanga" on Sunday 23rd where all salebulls will be available for inspection together witha cross section of breeding cows and sires.

The Hazeldean Angus stud isholding its 17th AnnualNorthern Performance Bull Saleat Pinora, Jackson, Queenslandon Thursday, August 16 wherein excess of 130 Angus and 30Senegus bulls will be on offerplus a number of paddock salebulls. This year's sale line up are anexceptional run of well grown 2year old bulls backed with breedleading data. Sires selected foruse in the Hazeldean herd areidentified not only for thecornerstone traits of easycalving and high reproductionrates but also for growth andthe northern and long fed$index. This year's Queenslandsale bulls average $110 for LongFed/CAAB Index which putsthem in the top 20% of thebreed. Average birth weightEBV is well below breed averagewhile the 600 day weight EBV isin the top 10% of the breed.Recent carcase data from

Rangers Valley, Glen Innesshows Hazeldean steersperforming above average forgrowth and exceptionally wellfor marbling. The steers goingthrough the feedlot from August2011 to February 2012 (underthe Rangers Valleys 300 dayprogram) averaged 3.24 for

marbling compared to theoverall yard average of 2.8. Forgrowth the Hazeldean steersaveraged 1.17kgs/day comparedto the total yard average of 1.11kgs/day. In addition to Angus bulls,Hazeldean will offer 30 high-performing Senegus bulls.Senegus are a composite breedincluding Senepol - a tropicallyadapted Bos Taurus breed fromthe Caribbean - and Angus. TheSenepol's slick coat gives heattolerance and parasiteresistance and Senegusinheriting the slick coat inherit100% of this ability. Senegusbulls offer an exciting option forbeef producers looking tomaintain heat and parasitetolerance while lifting fertilityand carcase value. Hazeldeanhas further expanded thecomposite with the inclusion ofthe moderate framed BlackSimmental breed to furtherboost growth rates and kilosproduced per hectare..The breeding program

continues full steam ahead andthe stud is particularly excitedwith the recent purchase of top

Hazeldean purchasedthe outstanding sire Te ManiaBerkley B1 in 2010 for anAustralian record of $65,000which was only eclipsed lastyear by a son selling at TeMania for $91,000. The topselling bull at the HazeldeanSouth Australian Angus Bullsale in February was also aBerkley son. Lawsons havecontinued using the bull via AIwith of his sons topping their2012 production sale in 2012 at$37,000. The hardworking committee have takenevery care to ensure the quality ofthe bulls is paramount for thisvery successful multi-vendor saleand is proud to welcome sevennew vendors and the return ofsome old familiar faces to theranks of bull sellers to supportthis great sale. This sale has areal commercial focus, buyers can

be assured of finding theright bull to fit into theirbreeding program withsome vendors opting tobring their whole teams ofsale bulls for buyercompetition. Recent internationalresearch has highlightedthe huge advantages ofadding Hereford bulls toblack herds with theresultant progeny deliveringas much as $30 per headback into the breeders pocket. Asa direct result of higher weightgain enabling earlier turnoverwith better carcase attributes.Herefords really are greatconverters to beef, the added advantages of a placidtemperament, great milking

ability, increased fertility, in thegrass based environment oftemperate Australia. The Herefordbull breeders of the 21st centuryare focusing their efforts oncarcase attributes, providing theready acceptance of the breed intothe MSA market.

With the the successful inductionof Heifers to the 2011 sale ourvendors have 18 diplayed in 2012.The 2011 sale topper, JindaleeDoreen E020, entered the ringwith a baby calf at side and 10 ofthis years' draft will have PTICresults at the point of sale.Steve Crowley and daughter, LisaHannaford, team up to judge thisstrong line-up of bulls at the 2012sale. With the recent success of the 6th World Brangus Congress hosted by theAustralian Brangus Cattle Association (ABCA) in May this year, theBrangus breed can be assured of a bright future in Australia.

Some 220 Brangus delegates, breedersand enthusiasts from throughoutAustralia and the United States ofAmerica, Mexico, South America andSouth Africa, descended uponRockhampton to take part in the 6thWorld Brangus Congress, the first eventof its kind in Australia for the Brangusbreed. Delegates enjoyed a range of technicalsessions and social events throughout theweek, giving them the opportunity tobroaden their knowledge, develop a greatnetwork of Brangus contacts and cele-brate the culture and history of theAustralian Brangus. "The interest the breed has receivedthroughout the Congress and Beef 2012has far exceeded our expectations", saidAshlee Austin, Executive Officer of theAustralian Brangus Cattle Association. "With the commercially valuable traitsthe Brangus breed has to offer the beefindustry, I suppose this should not comeas a surprise", Ms Austin said."This event has really put Brangus on themap as a breed not to be overlooked and Ithink the momentum the breed has pickup in the lead up to this event will con-tinue to take the breed forward to abright future", she said. The success of the Brangus breed hasbeen largely due to the dedication ofbreeders to breed adaptable cattle thatcan meet market specifications. Many of

the traits that Brangus breeders take forgranted are qualities that commercialbreeders aspire to have throughout theirherd. Brangus offers the poll gene into commer-cial herds with the known benefits of nodehorning stress on calves and operators. With labour on properties becoming moreexpensive, reducing the workload makeseconomic sense. Add to this no weightloss due to stress and the benefits quicklyadd up.Commercial breeders that have Brangusfemales in their herd report on theirstrong maternal instinct and ability toraise heavy calves. Equally as impressiveas the maternal base to a herd or injectedthrough sire purchases, Brangus geneticsoffer producers versatility in their mar-keting options. Brangus dams in the rightcountry will turn off heavy vealers orweaners that will grow on and finisheither on grain or pasture. Essentially the Brangus breed combinestwo of the largest gene pools in the world,Brahman and Angus. Combining theBrahman's heat tolerance with the valu-able marbled flesh of the Angus, breedershave produced a breed that can endureand conquer the harshest environmentand still produce a keenly sought after, marketable product. Commercial producers will have theopportunity to purchase high qualityBrangus genetics at the upcoming

BrangusAssociationsales. TheAssociation salesare based atRoma onSeptember 72012 andRockhamptonOctober 8 and 92012, and offer an elite selection of regis-tered and commercial bulls and femalesfrom Brangus breeders throughout NewSouth Wales and Queensland. All ani-mals at these sales are vet checked and

inspected for type and quality. Further information on these sales andthe breed can be accessed via the ABCAwebsite www.brangus.com.au or by con-tacting the ABCA office on (02) 67733056.

"We do this to show produc-ers that our bulls are able to convertgrass to muscle in natural conditions. We don't stuff them full of grain; we

want producers to know the perform-ance of the bull they choose will contin-ue in their herd". The bulls went onoat crop from 1 May.Unique amongst their competitors, theMcArthurs provide raw growth data ontheir bulls over a 210 day grass-fedtrial. This is run between the bulls'

weaning and yearling ages. This trialcomplements the Breedplan data avail-able on each bull. All Oldfield bulls are performancerecorded, vaccinated, vet certified andsemen tested. The 2012 draft of bullsrepresent over 10 different sire lines,

Drench resistance in cattle couldbecome a serious threat to farmproductivity in NSW, potentiallycosting millions in lost earningsif cattle producers don't takeappropriate action to protecttheir herds against harmfulworms, according to the NSWState Worm Control Co-ordinator, Dr Stephen Love."It could very easily get out ofhand if farmers aren't aware ofthe issue and take necessaryaction," warns Dr Love. While the issue of drenchresistance in sheep is quite wellunderstood, Dr Love says theresults of recent on-goingresearch shows that parasitesaffecting cattle are alsodeveloping drench resistance, but that in many cases beefproducers are not aware of the

problem, or that theirproductivity may already besuffering."Cattle farmers are only justbecoming aware that resistanceis a real issue for them because

now it's in their own backyardand not just something theyhear about from sheep farmers. There's definitely need for a lotmore education among cattleproducers around the dangersand causes of drenchresistance," says Dr Love. While the benefits of usingcombination drenches on sheepare widely acknowledged, DrLove says many cattle farmersare unaware that combinationdrenches have now beenformulated for cattle. "There is no doubt combinationdrenches are much moreeffective than single activedrenches in combating thegrowing problem of drenchresistance in cattle. Thechallenge now is for thatawareness to reach producers so

that, depending on theirsituation, they can take theright action," says Dr Love.Combination drenches includetwo or more actives which worktogether to effectively kill

parasites, as it is much lesslikely that worms will beresistant to two activessimultaneously. "The trouble with using singleactive drenches all the time isthat you are heading towardsresistance a lot faster. A

combination drench is theoptimal way to go and theearlier we get in with usingthem the better," explains DrLove. Based on the worm count databeing seen in recent surveys inmajor cattle producing regionsof the State, worm controlcoordinators have concludedthat there is a high chanceproducers could suffer verysignificant productivity losses intheir herds."We've had repeated surveysand trials in NSW, QLD, VICand WA and there's now strongevidence that resistance isposing a threat. It's importantfor producers to nip the issue inthe bud before it becomes an

unmanageable problem acrossthe State," says Dr Love."We got in later than we shouldhave with sheep. We shouldn'twait until the problem getsaway from us to take action incattle. As new combinationproducts become available

farmers should be using themfrom day one. The earlier we getin the better," he advises.Until recently, there were nocombination drench solutionsavailable for cattle producers inAustralia. In light of theincreasing awareness aboutdrench resistance among cattle, leading animal health supplierMerial Australia has developedthe country's first combinationpour-on for beef producers:Eclipse combination pour-on forcattle. Eclipse contains two powerfulactives - abamectin andlevamisole - in one single dose, creating a whole new level ofparasite protection. Theabamectin component works to

kill a broad spectrum of internaland external parasites, whilethe levamisole component worksto kill ML-resistant strains ofCooperia and Ostertagia."Farmers love using MLproducts for cattle and a lot ofthem use ML all the time. Theadvantage of Eclipse is that ithas unrelated actives as well sofrom a resistance point of view, and an efficacy point of view,Eclipse is better than using asingle active drench of a similaractivity length," explains DrLove. Worm control coordinatorsrecommend that farmers carryout worm checks on their herd, and include a combinationproduct into their drenchrotation to keep on top of theissue."Including a combinationproduct in your drench rotationwould be the best step at thisstage," suggests Dr Love.

A combination of two powerful actives in one convenient dose. New eclipse delivers the power of a combination in a pour-on. A whole new level of parasite control for Australian beef producers.

Brutally effective against all major internal parasites – including those resistant to endectocide drenches – eclipse delivers a level of parasite control you simply can’t get from conventional, single-active products.

Take your parasite control to the next level. Double strength eclipse.

The Doyles embarked on aproject last year to replace theirold yards with a state of the artcomplex. The design - a collaborationbetween ProWay and Mr Doyle'sconsiderable knowledge overyears of building yards - hasdelivered a safe and hassle freehandling system on the Jerichoproperty.

"The main reason we startedthis project is that the currentyards had reached their use bydate," Mr Doyle said."They had also become too smallwith the development we'vedone on the property."Another key factor was staffrecruitment and retention. Likemany property owners theDoyles compete with the mining

industry for employees."We need to have good facilitiesto attract the people who wantto work in the livestockbusiness."Our yards provide some of thebest facilities around whichmakes the job easier. And whilethe team is happy, they aremore likely to stay."Mr Doyle said ProWay

forwarded plan ideas andphotographs. The company thenfollowed up by sending adesigner to Tumbar toincorporate Mr Doyle's needsand ideas and then translatethese to a final design.Although not the architect ofthis particular complex, ProWaydesigner Joe Hoban, said it isthe company's goal to "get thedesign right". He said ProWay aimed tominimise ongoing maintenance

costs, maximise animal welfareand produce the end result ontime and on budget.Construction began in lateAugust as promised and byOctober 6 the first mob of cattlewere processed through theyards. The Doyles have now putmore than 10,000 cattle throughthe new complex - with the teamsmiling at the ease of operation."It was the most hassle free jobwe've ever done," Mr Doyle said.He added that ProWay delivereda quality product on time and ina very professional manner.Similarly, the ProWay teamthoroughly enjoyed workingwith the Doyles. The end result is yards that canhandle 2000 head of cattle withease and maximal flow. The circular yard design lendsitself to the natural circularinstinct of cattle. Some of the other featuresinclude a curved handling racefed by a circular rotary forcewhich is ideal for cattle flow."The Tumbar yards have anelevated walkway next to thecircular lead-up. This separatesthe operator from the cattle forsafety in the force areas," MrHoban said."There are gates in the lead-upyards which can be operatedfrom the walkway so you don'thave to get into the yards tomove the cattle forward."There is also an elevatedwalkway in the lead-up to thecalf race for safety and labourefficiency - if you can work fromthe walkway it saves valuabletime."Mr Hoban said the yards alsooffered plenty of shelter with theworking areas such as the racesand the pound yard under coverfor operator safety and comfort.Following the installation byProWay, Mr Doyle said troughswere installed and a designeremployed to install a sprinklersystem throughout the complex."The new yards have been builtadjacent to the laneway systemserving the property, complementing the extensiveweaner complex constructedseveral years ago on the otherside of the laneway." Mr Doylesaid."We are concentrating on thequality domestic feeder as wellas backgrounder markets."Preparing weaners for market isa key part of the operation. At least two weeks or more areallowed for weaners totransition from milk to grass."We feed them hay and boostblocks to get their gut ready. This time also allows them toquieten down. It allows us tomake sure they are well handledand quiet and going ahead."The Doyles are well known atRoma for their quality cattle, selling "a fair few cattle" intothe 300kg steer market."We look forward to a continuedassociation with ProWay asimprovements are made to othersets of yards on Tumbar," MrDoyle said.

"Our ProWay yards were built inSeptember 2008 and I can notspeak highly enough of them.Cattle work extremely well throughthe yards and the labour requiredhas been reduced. The best part ofbuilding our new yards was thepeople at ProWay, they have all ofthe technical assistance required, but also they are great people todeal with, nothing is too muchtrouble and the after sales serviceis second to none. The cost to buildour yards is more than comparableto us trying to do the job ourselves, the construction team erected theyards in just 16 days, and it wouldhave taken us about 12 months inbetween other jobs, so we hadnext to no downtime, a hugesaving."

Grammarians have a strong sense of family and belonging. You are a Grammarian for life.

Every opportunity. Every student. Every day.

Among Australia’s

TOP 50Country Schools

Among Queensland’s

TOP 50Secondary Schools

1300 GRAMMAR www.rgs.qld.edu.au

The Rockhampton Grammar School has been ranked among the best of the nation’s 10,000 estimated schools according to The Australian which has placed it among the Top 50 Country Schools and among the Top 50

Queensland Secondary Schools, the only Central Queensland School to make both lists.

“We’re pleased to be regarded as one of the best, but it’s the students who are the best. They are the ones who give everything to achieve, inside and outside of School,” explains RGS Headmaster Dr Phillip Moulds.

The School is home to over 330 boarders and nearly 1000 day students from Prep to Year 12.

In 2011, 99% of RGS Year 12s achieved a Queensland Certificate of Education and 36.5% attained an OP1–5, placing them among the best in the state in 2011. 19 RGS Year 12 students

achieved an OP 1. RGS, which offers

more than 40 different courses to seniors – from Biology and Beauty Services to Information Technology and Visual Art, provides students with a high-quality, diversified education

experience that equips them for learning, work and life beyond school.

“Accessibility to different courses and organisations provides opportunities for every student to try something new and give anything a go, which are key components in the Rockhampton Grammar School education process. The offerings we make help students make informed choices about their future,” says Dr Moulds.

“And that’s the real value Rockhampton Grammar; we have a unique mix of courses and virtually all of our students acquire a combination of learning and experience which

universities and employer highly value,” adds Dr Moulds.

Though tuition at some private schools can approach $20,000 the top-performing Central Queensland school attracts annual tuition of $8120 (fees for

Years 8-12, 2012). And whilst boarding fees can exceed $19,000 at other schools, RGS fees are approximately $14000.

Both fees make this school accessible to a range of working families who want to send their children to private

school. And demand for places at RGS, which has some of the best resources of any school available to students, is at an all time high.

The School embraces the Dimensions of Learning Philosophy, a model which underpins

its academic curriculum and empowers students. The program promotes the deliberate development of higher order thinking, intelligent behaviours and actions, and a dedication to learning throughout life.

RGS credits parents who are active in the School community, teachers who are committed and the work they do together with children who want to succeed. The partnership enables each student to achieve his or her aspirations and personal best. These ideals are expressed in its motto Macte Virtute Et Litteris or Grow in Character and Scholarship.

Students from Prep through Year 12 interact freely at the School, which is large enough and resourced to support a diverse and rich curriculum yet small enough to provide individual care and attention for every girl and boy.

Students take a proactive and hands-on approach to community service under the guidance of teachers, earning respect through achievement. Through initiatives such as Grammar Gives Back program and GrammarGlobal, students learn to appreciate the value and importance of extending their support and assistance to others.

Whether it is raising funds through a sausage sizzle to support the Cancer Foundation, donating their time at the local retirement village or travelling to Nepal to lend a helping hand in constructing a hospital, RGS students strive to make a difference. They are rewarded in return with a developing strength of character, initiative and leadership skills, courage and integrity.

“Rockhampton Grammar students emerge into society educated, well-rounded and confident; equipped to pursue their ambitions, secure in their sense of self and their capacity to make the most of the opportunities, and meet all challenges, which lay ahead of them,” says Dr Moulds.

“[ I ]t’s the students who are the best. They are the ones who give everything to achieve, inside and outside of School.”
