The Right Way is the Safe Way
On The Right Track
In the rail industry Union Pacific Railroad has one of the most overt safety culture initiatives: Courage to Care. According to UP.com, they describe their Courage to Care:
Union Pacific introduced Courage to Care in 2012. The pledge represents a culture of safety and personal accountability.
THE COURAGE TO CARE PLEDGE
I have the courage to care. Worn with a lion’s pride, it means those I work with will have my back, and I will have theirs. I pledge to shield myself and my team from harm. I will take action to keep them safe, by fixing an unsafe situation, addressing an unsafe behavior or stopping the line. In turn, I will have the courage to accept the same actions from my coworkers, who care enough to correct my path. We wear this badge out of respect for each other and those who have gone before us. On my watch, we will all go home safe to our families every day. What the Badge of Courage Means
The Badge of Courage is a coat of arms, embodying that for which Union Pacific strives – for every employee to safely go home. When employees make the voluntary decision to wear the badge, it is a visible sign of their commitment to correct an unsafe situation, and that, in turn, they will accept any feedback that may be given to them. The lions symbolize strength, courage and pride. They are strategically positioned back to back, protecting each other from harm and reminding employees of their pledge to each other: "You have my back, and I have yours."
The spike in the center represents Union Pacific's heritage and success in overcoming great challenges, and includes the Latin words that translate to “Go Home Safely.”
PTI has a strong safety foundation but it relies on every employee caring enough to make it personal and “walk the walk.” Do you have the Courage to Care? Safety cultures depend on you and me. I want you to go home safely today.
I promise to watch your back. Will you do the same for me?

The month of August was declared "Driver Appreciation Month" in the Denver Division in conjunction with PTI’s celebration of being in business for 33 years. Branch Managers planned events to celebrate the PTI associates who provide safe and courteous service to our customers on a daily basis. "Taking a moment to acknowledge someone for their efforts, goes along way to insure even greater performance now and in the future" stated General Manager Andre Mayfield about the drivers in the division. “The Denver Division looks forward to being a team of drivers and managers working together for the success of PTI for many more years to come,” according to Mayfield. Denver Division Honors Its Drivers

Local branch managers were out in force during the PTI Divisional Hiring Day in August. Workforce Centers in 11 communities throughout Colorado, Utah and Nevada were identified to recruit potential new employees for PTI. Approximately 140 potential drivers spoke with our local managers and senior drivers about working for PTI— the best crew transportation company. The purpose of this effort was two fold. First, using Workforce Centers to recruit and train allows PTI managers to have an ongoing partnership to “Hire the Best for the Best.” Secondly, the hiring campaign gives our PTI managers the chance to use their leadership skills and build a personalize recruitment program. “Many of the men and women I have the honor of working with had never went into a Workforce Center much less hold a Job Fair. I am very proud of their efforts,” stated Andre D. Mayfield, General Manager for PTI Special Projects. The recruitment efforts from this campaign has shown PTI is the employer to work for in crew transportation. “We are building new relationships in each community and will be scheduling future Job Fairs and meetings at the Workforce Centers,” according Mayfield. The Denver Division will also continue working to develop a better community-based hiring approach to employ individuals that live in the communities that PTI serves.

"Hire the Best for Best" Recruitment Campaign a Success The State of Utah Workforce Development hosted
the Divisional Roundtable Meeting in Salt Lake City this year. This meeting was designed for all the Branch Managers to meet and develop ways to improve the Operation of the division with respect to OTP, Safety, Customer Service and Driver Appreciation.
"Many of the managers had not personally met each other until this session", stated General M a n a g e r A n d r e Mayf ie ld. "Each manager brought their on prospective to PTI and we developed some
common standards such the 32 Hour OTR/DYV Training Matrix". The key topic of safety was discussed with RSCC Norman Vance (pictured above) providing managers DriveCam information and ways to view and coach events, Hours of Service guidelines and the alike. The meeting concluded with reviewing over all the programs that Workforce Center can offer to any employer. "We are here to insure your Business succeeds in our State" noted Zachary Whitwell Development Specialist with the State (pictured right.) The meeting goals were achieved with a greater

While following a pickup towing a flatbed trailer loaded with a Bobcat, Rick saw the trailer starting to swerve. He initiated his safety training and applied his vehicle brakes to back away. In a short time, the pickup lost control and veered head-on into busy two-lane highway traffic. The pickup collided into a water truck while the towed trailer detached and crashed into a ravine. Rick was able to call for 911 help as well as get his crew safely to their destination! We appreciate Rick’s alertness and recognize him for his quick, and safe, thinking! THANK YOU RICK!
