The latest to disclose plans is Ford Motor Co., which is developing a fea- ture for heavy traffic jams that would let the car keep up with traffic and stay in its lane. For now, Ford will only say that “Traffic Jam As- sist” will be available in the “mid term,” meaning at least five years away. Audi, which had a TTS sports car drive itself up Pikes Peak in 2010, says self-driving is no longer fantasy. “Our piloted-driving technology is shifting from a purely research phase into actual pre-pro- duction planning,” spokesman Brad Stertz said. Automakers have dem- onstrated for years cars that can electronically talk to each other to avoid accidents, but the surge of interest in self-driving cars comes as Google has been successfully show- ing off a self-driving Pri- us. Once the stuff of sci-ence fiction and cartoons,automakers are racing tobe first with vehicles thatdrive themselves.

While the first systemswon’t be that ambitious —don’t expect to workcrossword puzzles whilelounging “Jetsons”-stylebehind the wheel — theypoint to future cars thatwill make driving easierand actively avoid acci-dents.

The latest to discloseplans is Ford Motor Co.,which is developing a fea-ture for heavy trafficjams that would let the carkeep up with traffic andstay in its lane.

For now, Ford will onlysay that “Traffic Jam As-sist” will be available inthe “mid term,” meaningat least five years away.

Audi, which had a TTSsports car drive itself upPikes Peak in 2010, saysself-driving is no longerfantasy.

“Our piloted-drivingtechnology is shiftingfrom a purely research

Automakers have dem-onstrated for years carsthat can electronicallytalk to each other to avoidaccidents, but the surge ofinterest in self-drivingcars comes as Google has

Most automakers aremore down to earth intheir self-driving initia-tives, building on and

combining systems al-ready in today’s cars, suchas adaptive cruise con-trol. Among them:

At just under $30,000base retail price, the 2012Mitsubishi i-MiEV is themost affordable all-elec-tric car in the U.S. market.

The little fivedoorwithvery little hood in thefront also has an eye-pop-ping, 126-miles-per-gal-lon-equivalent ratingfrom the federal govern-ment in city driving.

That’s higher than the106-mpg-e city rating of the2012 Nissan Leaf electriccar but less than the 132-mpg-e of the upcomingHonda Fit EV.

A bonus: The rear-wheel drive i-MiEV has aplucky personality andspeed-sensitive steeringthat, while electrically de-livered, feels and respon-ds more like a regularcar’s steering than doesthat of some gasoline-

electric hybrid cars.The same compliment

goes for the iMiEV’s elec-tric brakes and their firm,realistic pedal feel.

Still, i-MiEV drivershave to keep a close eye onmileage range, becauselike all solely electriccars, this little hatchbackcan’t go far on a fullcharge. Indeed the U.S.government estimatesthe i-MiEV range at 62miles on a full charge.

Typical time to fully re-charge: Seven to 22 hours,depending on the charger.

Starting manufactur-er’s suggested retailprice, including destina-tion charge, is $29,975 foran i-MiEV ES model with66-horsepower electricmotor, a 16-kilowatt lithi-um-ion battery and a one-speed, direct drive trans-mission.

In comparison, themost popular all-electric

car in the United States —the front-wheel drive Nis-san Leaf — has a startingretail price, includingdestination charge, of$36,050 for a 2012 SV with107-horsepower electricmotor, 24-kilowatt lithi-um-ion battery and a sin-gle-speed reducer trans-mission. The federal gov-ernment estimates a 73-mile range for the Leaf ona full charge.

The test i-MiEV was

the upper SE model,which included optional40-gigabyte hard drivefor music storage andnavigation system, rear-view camera, a batterywarming system for usein cold weather, and aquick-charge port.

Many typical car ame-nities were in this Mitsu-bishi, including six airbags, traction and stabil-ity control and air condi-tioner with micron filter.

For the 2013 model year, the mostimportant changes to the Mazda3

include greater availability of the com-pany’s new Skyactiv powertrain as wellas more standard comfort features.

The Skyactiv system will be availableon not only the sedan and hatchbackmodels in the “iTouring” and “iGrandTouring” trim levels as it is now, but itwill expand into the sport sedan.

The 2012 “i Sport” currently has a 2-liter, four-cylinder engine, but not Sky-activ, which boosts engine compressionto squeeze more energy out of everydrop of gas, and extend gas mileage. The

sport version is available as a sedan only.Other changes to the sport version

make it more competitive with the seg-ment, Mazda says. For 2013, it adds themulti-information display seen on therest of the lineup and a USB port asstandard equipment. The higher trimlevels also receive a USB port standard.

Air conditioning is now standard onall versions. A passive entry keylesssystem, push-button start and automaticclimate control are now standard on thetouring and grand touring trims, alongwith a blind-spot monitoring system.

Mazda said the 2013 Mazda3 will goon sale later in 2012.

2011 as the hardest-hit brands during lastyear’s Japan earthquake recorded huge year-over-year gains. Toyota gained 60.3 percent;Honda picked up 48.8 percent, and Nissanadded 28.2 percent.

The all-new 2012 Buick Verano isa compact sedan and a posheveryday car that excels at mak-

ing the driver comfortable.With its 2.4-liter four-cylinder

engine, the Verano was easyto drive and maneuveraround small parking lots.Because of its compact size,it’s not the best familyhauler, and it’s not thesportiest. But it is an afford-able luxury car that’s quitepretty and quiet as a mouse.

My top-trim test car, which hadleather seating, rang up at $26,850.

It’s easy for kids to get in and out. The

doors pulls are lightweight, and thestep-in height is a piece of cake for kids.

The five-seater’s trunk is surprisinglylarge for a compact sedan.It can easily handle aweek’s worth of groceries.

Once inside the Verano, Iwas a happy camper. It hasso many features that it wasfun to just sit and play withthem. With its heated driverand front passenger seats,

heated steering wheel, power driver’sseat, sunroof and remote start, I feltpampered in this car.

BAY SHORE, N.Y. — Itjust keeps going, and go-ing, and going. No, it’s nota battery. It’s Irvin Gor-don’s 1966 Volvo P1800S.

Gordon’s small, redtwo-door has more than2.9 million miles on theodometer, the equivalentof nearly 1,176 times

across the globe.The retired school-

teacher from Long Islandhopes to reach the 3 mil-lion mile mark by nextyear. He only has 34,000miles to go.

The 72-year-old Gor-don drives his Volvo ev-erywhere. He has held theGuinness World Recordsmark for High MileageVehicle since 2002 and

was the first person tohold that record.

“It’s just a car I enjoydriving,” he said.

He bought his belovedcar on June 30, 1966, for$4,150 at the age of 25. “Itwas a whole year’s sala-ry,” he said.

Gordon originallywanted the convertibleVolvo with air condition-ing, but it was too expen-

sive. He paid extra to havean AM/FM radio, though.

“It was $10 extra, andat that time, $10 was a lot.But an AM/FM radio was abig deal,” he said.

Even his license platesays “MILNMILER.”

His odometer doesn’thave enough digits to dis-play the actual mileage,but Gordon has tune-uprecords verifying it.

Looking at the full-size 2013 FordTaurus, the thought of sticking afour-cylinder in the heavy sedan

seems like an ill-fated move. Ford’s exe-cution defies conventional thought,however, thanks to the Eco-Boost turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that hasenough oomph — 240horsepower and 270pounds-feet of torque — tomove the sedan brisklywhile returning the Taurus’highest gas mileage esti-mates: 22/32 mpg city/highway.

The EcoBoost 2.0-liter is a $995option for the Taurus. Despite its pint-sized displacement, the four-cylinderEcoboost engine doesn’t feel out ofplace in the big sedan. It’s eager to pullthe Taurus with heaps of usable poweravailable from the get-go; there’s no

need to rev the engine very high to getthe Taurus moving quickly.

Unlike the standard V-6 and the SHOmodel with the higher-output EcoBoostV-6, weight-adding all-wheel drive isn’tavailable on the four-cylinder version.

The Taurus EcoBoost can run on reg-ular, but you won’t get themaximum rated 240 hp —that requires premiumgasoline. The 2.0-litermakes 231 hp using regulargasoline.

The four-cylinder engineis quiet and unobtrusivewhen leisurely cruisingaround, to the point where

it’s hard to tell if the car is running. Itdoesn’t sound as refined when theaccelerator pedal goes down; the 2.0-liter clatters at higher engine speeds.

With the EcoBoost engine and $795destination charge, the SE starts at$28,390, the SEL at $30,590 and theLimited at $34,790.

For the 2013 model year, the just-released Chevrolet Sonic offers moreavailable features on lower trim levels, and a new 7-inch touch-screen

with Chevy’s MyLink multimedia system is now standard on higher-trimmed models.

The updated 2013 Sonic, above and below, will be on sale this summer.It’s available in sedan and hatchback body styles and in LS, LT or LTZtrims.All Sonic models get standard Bluetoothconnectivity and steering-wheel-mountedcontrols for 2013. All models also get newintegrated blind-spot mirrors.

The LT trim now comes with Bluetoothaudio streaming, a USB port and cruise con-trol standard. The LT with an automatic trans-mission also gets remote start standard. The LTZ trim gets a standard rearspoiler. A premium six-speaker audio system is standard on LT and LTZtrims and optional on the LS trim.

Chevrolet MyLink, now available on the Sonic, will have an availablenavigation application.
