On Monday, the 16th of Feb-ruary, the Board of Direc-tors was elected at the

Annual Stockholders Meeting. I would like to thank the outgoing board members for their services and support and welcome the new board members. A special thanks goes to Mr. Bob Burch for his vision and leadership. I am happy to report to you that we witnessed a major improvement in 2014 specifi-cally in membership and banquet sales. We finished the year in the positive. Since the Long Range Plan-ning Committee Town Hall meeting in January, a lot of your suggestions and comments were

addressed. We improved the Wi-Fi system in the clubhouse. We are updating your e-mail addresses for better communica-tion. We are working on outdoor family activities for the warmer months to utilize our beach. We are planning a summer kids’ camp in July. We also addressed the food and service consistency. Be safe and I’ll see you at the Club.

Before we get too far into the 2015 golf season, please let me once again offer my

heartfelt thanks to the talented golf staff that we have here at James River. Jeremy, Sean, and the rest of the dedicated individuals at JRCC without a doubt provide us with the best in tournament administration, instruction, junior golf, team matches, pro shop management, etc., in our entire region. Some of the highlights from our 2014 season include: v 13,494 rounds played

(adjusted for the fall renovation closure it is the most of the last three years)

v 557 lessons provided by Jeremy & Sean

v 18 ladies’ and social golf clinics

v 2 junior golf camps (45 participants)

v 20 Golf Ratz clinics (5 per session)

v Junior Club Championship participation increase

v Initiation of pre-Member/Guest Shootout

v Continuation of the Springfield Country Club Annual Match

v 9 “Play Away with the Pro” days during the renovation

v 203 Tee Times Schedule for members at other clubs

v First indoor Ladies Putting Championship

v Eric and Austin achieved B8 PGA apprentice status

v Organized the first JRCC Course Management blog with Michelle

v First Club trip to Ireland (anticipate a return in 2016)

v Pro Play Friday – didn’t miss a Friday; 1:00 p.m. start, all welcome

v Indoor lessons provided at Tidewater Physical Therapy (first ever)

At our January meeting, the Golf Committee adopted a policy giving our super senior participants the ability to utilize the Green Tee Boxes subject to the applicable handicap adjustments versus the tee positions being used by “the field.” For more information on this policy, please contact the pro shop. Additionally, in my continued spotlighting of the importance and benefit of our annual tournament fee, I have had many positive comments and thanks from our golfing

members regarding the quality of our events. Thanks to everyone for your support of our JRCC golf program. Coming this month, be on the lookout for our new fleet of golf carts. We think that you will be particularly impressed with the comfort of the seats and other improvements such as better designed golf bag rain covers. Finally, a list of optional golf charges such as locker fees, cart fees, guest fees, etc., for 2015 has been published and will be posted outside of the pro shop. Herewith, the golf joke of the month: You know how you can tell a golfer in church? He’s the one who, when he puts his hands together to pray, has the interlocking grip. And finally, this: “I never exaggerate…sometimes I just remember big.” ~Chi Chi Rodriquez

Will the cold ever leave? How can anyone be able to put into practice that

resolution to play the game of golf better if the weather won’t allow us to get outside and practice? Very frustrating, isn’t it? As I wrote last month, the only golf I am seeing is that on TV, and it seems that whatever day it is that I watch and whatever tournament is being played, the weather is perfect! Again, back to reality. The good

news is that the entire collection, with the exception of a few clubs still being worked on, have been returned home and are safely in the new, museum-quality cases located in the Board Room. With the very able assistance of the two wonderful women from The Mariners’ Museum, Cindi Verser and Rachel Conley, the three of us spent a weekend bringing all the clubs and balls from Mariners’ to JRCC. After wrapping those clubs that have deteriorating grips and

other conservation issues with plastics to minimize the problem, the clubs are now in the drawers, safe and secure. The electronic cataloging into the digital database continues and the Board members and I are looking for what we will put into the exhibit case that presently houses the exhibit on the four James River members who have won the Virginia State Amateur Championship.

Golf Museum William Cogar, Curator

March means golf is right around the corner. Despite the crazy weather of the

last few months the golf course and golf department are still on track for a great golf season. Many of you have commented on the care being put into the course and the clubhouse grounds this past month. The maintenance staff has been working hard to clear the last of the debris from the course and prepare the entire facility to showcase our fabulous Club to its members and guests this coming season. We are very blessed to have Rob Wilmans and his team at JRCC. The Golf Fitness Program, which concluded last week, was a huge success. The four-week program had 30 participants who came away from the program with a better understanding of the four areas of the golf swing all professional golfers have in common. They also learned what might be physically preventing

them from swinging like a tour player and what exercises they could do to strengthen these four areas. The feedback was so posi-tive that we are working on other options to bring this program to more of the JRCC membership. If you had an interest in the program but could not make this past series, please let me know. A special thanks to Tidewater Per-formance for helping to bring golf fitness to James River. This season we have three ideas to get more of our member-ship playing golf. First of all, the junior golf program will have a JRCC golf team this year. Junior golfers will have the opportu-nity to participate and contribute to the team on Saturday after-noons. We will be having a Junior Night Kickoff to explain the junior agenda for 2015. The date for the kickoff will be posted soon. Sec-ondly, we have created a JRCC Short Course. This course will be great for families, juniors, begin-

ners and seasoned golfers looking to see how low they can go. The par fives, par fours and par threes will be played from approxi-mately 300, 200 and 100 yards respectively. The course will be equipped with its own scorecard to help navigate the tee locations and provide an all-around golfing experience. Last but not least, Nine and Wine for ladies will be played on Wednesday nights and our first men’s two-person team 9-hole league will be played on Thursday nights. Both programs will begin in April. Please keep an eye out for the sign-up dates for these and other programs we have planned in 2015. Let us make 2015 one of the best golfing years for you at JRCC. You cannot do that without a plan. Please contact us to help you prepare for success this golfing season. I’m looking forward to seeing you on the course!

Mary Mills, President It’s been another tough winter for our outdoor clay courts here at the Club. Quite a bit of

work has gone into repairing the two front courts, which are now playable during dry weather. All nine of our courts are scheduled to be reconditioned at the end of the month, with an “official” opening on April 1. Spring after-school junior tennis clinics will begin Tuesday, April 14, following spring break. These instructional classes will take place each Tuesday and Thursday at 4:00 p.m. as well as 5:00 p.m. each Wednesday. All classes are one hour long, with the session ending May 21. Our first big event for 2015, the Spring Family Party, is slated for Saturday, April 18, 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. This kickoff party promises plenty of tennis, food and drink, games and prizes for all ages. All of the new Babolat rackets will be available for demo as well. Best of all, there is no charge for this event, so bring the entire family! See you at the courts!

We have a lot of new and exciting things happening this year and Jeremy Franks will be kicking them off for us at this meeting. You don’t want to be left out! By the way, Sandy Kane has planned one of her scrumptious menus that is a group favorite for this kick-off meeting.

We also want anyone who would like to learn more about becoming part of the WGA to please feel welcome to attend this opening meeting. We are trying to grow our membership this year and we welcome all women at JRCC to join us. Give Cynara at the Club a call and make your reservation. Upcoming Events: Monthly Social, Thursday, March 12,; Ice Breaker Tournament, Sunday, April 26, and the Member-Guest, Tuesday, May 19 – Wednesday, May 20.

Spring is so close! I am sure that you are as ready as I am for the warmer weather and

the ability to enjoy the grounds of James River! While the winter weather has been less than pleas-ant, our Club staff has worked diligently on warm weather pro-grams and ways to increase the value of our membership. Please continue to share your ideas about programs you would like to see. Your ideas are key to keeping our Club relevant and a pleasant experience. Before we discuss new pro-grams I wanted to remind you about our membership catego-ries for those of you with over 15 years of dedicated membership at James River Country Club. Retired Athletic and Social memberships are for those who are over 65 years young with at least 15 years of James River membership. For our esteemed colleagues who are at least 80 years young with over 20 years of experience at James River we have a Senior Social membership (does not include greens fees). Our bylaws limit these member-ships to no more than 10% of our total membership for each of the two age groups. To ensure we are maximizing the available

20%, our Membership Director, Michelle Herbst, maintains the waiting list and updates the list quarterly. Please contact her if you would like to be added to the waiting list. These are our current programs to help us prepare for the spring and summer:1. 50% off Initiation! Hopefully this is not the first time you are hearing about this terrific offer that runs through March 31, 2015. After that, we will not be offering discounted initiation fees at least until mid-Summer. This is the best membership pricing we have offered. Although it is still cold outside, it won’t be long before the pool is open. So please reach out to friends and family members about this great special so their membership will be in place by the start of summer! 2. All Sports Camps. This summer our Club will host the first ever JRCC All Sports Camps for kids 7 years old and up. These camps will be a week of full day activities including tennis, golf, and swimming. This will not just be all day babysitting, but instruc-tion in each activity throughout the week. Lunch will be included. Be on the lookout for more details and pricing. 3. Fitness Partnerships. While the end goal is a fitness center renovation of the Club at some time down the road, our Club is about to provide us a near term fitness option. Our Club staff con-tacted two different fitness facil-ities about options for us. One

option will be for James River members to get discounted mem-berships at local fitness facili-ties. The second option is to offer classes, here at James River that cater to various fitness capabili-ties within the Club. Thanks for all you are doing to help your Membership Committee and Club staff improve our terrific members’ Club! I look forward to seeing you around James River, especially as the weather warms up and we can move outside!

Our March Member of the Month is Mr. J. Spencer Gilmore II, an active propo-nent of JRCC. Over the past few months Mr. Gilmore re-cruited and sponsored two new members. He also spent a significant amount of time working with the Membership Committee to develop new initiatives, many of which were adopted and are in place. His efforts to help add new mem-bership and retain current membership make Spencer the ideal selection for Mem-ber of the Month. Thank you, Mr. Gilmore, for your hard work behind the scenes!
