the Polar Ionosphere

Abstract: The application of the incoherent scatter radar technique to the

observation of the earth's ionosphere is described. The basic theory of the

incoherent scatter is reviewed briefly and the radar parameters for these investigations are rough1y estimated using the radar equation. Ionospheric parameters obtained directly from the incoherent scatter radar measurements are then described. The scheme for derivation of the £-region parametersneutral winds, electrical conductivities, electric fields and currents-is discussed.

The parameters of the Chatanika incoherent scatter radar which is the only radar of this type existing in the polar region are referred to and such ionospheric quantities that being obtained by this radar are also presented.
