Tickets are now on sale for Olean Area Young Professionals’ Annual Awards ceremony.

The event, scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m., Oct. 16, at The Old Library Restaurant in Olean, will see sevenarea young professionals honored for their hard work and dedication to the greater Olean area.

The 2019 honorees and their awards are: Pete Coate, an application engineer at Elantas Pdg Inc,received the Emerging Young Leader Award; Alicia Broadbent, director of planning and development atSouthern Tier Health Care System, received the MVYP Award; Holly McCully, an inbound marketingspecialist at protocol 80, received the Rookie of the Year Award; Kyle Leslie, vice president of the OleanSchools Foundation, received the Volunteer of the Year Award. Husband and wife Heath and SallyMcCombs share the OAYP Member of the Year Award; and The Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts atSt. Bonaventure Universitywas named this year’s Friend of OAYP.

Tickets are $25 and cover the cost of admission and food. A cash bar will be available. Tickets may bepurchased at Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce’s office at 301 N. Union St., or online here.

Volunteers sought for Santa Claus Lane prep work

Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce isseeking help to make sure downtown Olean shinesbright this holiday season.

From 10 a.m. to noon, Oct. 5, at the city’s waterfiltration plant’s storage building at 1332 River St., theChamber is calling on volunteers to help inspect andprepare the lights and decorations that will adornOlean’s Santa Claus Lane along North Union Street.

“The tradition of Santa Claus Lane is one of theoldest in the city and the Chamber is proud to put thisevent on each holiday season,” said Meme Yanetsko,the Chamber’s COO. “Because this is such a large undertaking, we’re hoping the community will turnout to help us get it ready this year.”

Archbishop Walsh Academy immortalized as Santa Claus Lane ornament

Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce has unveiled one of its newest Santa Claus Laneornaments, a depiction of the Archbishop Walsh Academy.

The ornament of Archbishop Walsh joins the Beef ‘n’ Barrel restaurant ornament as the 2019 SantaClaus Lane ornaments.

Included with each of the ornaments is a brief history of Walsh -- In October of 1957, hundreds ofpeople gathered at Christ the King Seminary in Buffalo to hear Bishop Leo R. Smith announce that acentral Catholic high school was to be established in Olean. The school was to be named afterArchbishop Thomas J. Walsh, who had deep roots in the Southern Tier.

Tech teens plan robotic helper

Participants in Boundless Connections’ TECHUnleashed program for 13-17-year-olds have setan ambitious goal for their 2019-2020 serviceproject: to develop a voice-activated robot to helppeople living with physical disabilities.

The group of 25 teens met August 19-23 for thesecond session of the TECH Unleashedsummer camp where they solidified plans fortheir robotic helper.

CRCF to lead Cattaraugus Gives Day Dec. 3

Cattaraugus Gives, the Cattaraugusregion’s day of giving, led by the CattaraugusRegion Community Foundation, will returnthis year on Dec. 3 to continue its growth inraising funds and awareness for nonprofitsand charitable causes in the region.

Cattaraugus Gives is a 24-hour onlinefundraising blitz, bringing together nonprofits from all over the region in friendly fundraisingcompetition, with the overall goal of creating a more compassionate, giving community. In 2018, 47 nonprofit organizations together raised just short of $32,000 to benefit programs andprojects in Cattaraugus County during Cattaraugus Gives. CRCF also offered $5,000 in monetaryincentives to participating organizations.
