Code named “Project Dragon” after the owner’s daughter’s high school mascot The Southlake (TX) Dragons, BNSF Logistics, LLC began discussions with Scott Landrum, founder and owner of Technology Transportation Services (TTS) (http://www.railengineer.com/) several years ago. I am pleased to announce we consummated the acquisition of TTS this month.

Scott Landrum (pictured left), Owner & President of TTS, is a registered professional engineer (PE) in the state of Texas and brings 26 years of industry experience to his role. Prior to founding TTS in 2001, Scott was the Manager of Mechanical Engineering at BNSF Railway, the Chief Engineer at Premiere Engineering and a Project Engineer with Thrall Car Manufacturing Co. He studied Mechanical Engineering at Southern Polytechnic State University.

TTS began as an engineering based logistics company performing load inspections for BNSF Railway. The company then expanded into a logistics company that specializes in handling all aspects of shipping by rail encompassing engineering

design, wind logistics, project cargo logistics and rail based distribution center services. Their clients include railcar builders, manufacturers, shippers, railroads and energy companies that turn to TTS to move large items such as turbines, generators, wind blades and more. For some projects, they manage the entire end-to-end shipping process. For others, they partner with clients to handle a segment of the logistics chain or a specific engineering need.

The acquisition of TTS by BNSF Logistics, LLC is centered around our stated objective to expand our multi-modal services to the Industrial Products sector (Wind, PowerGen, Oil & Gas, EPC/Construction, Rail, Heavy Equipment and Chemical markets) of North America. The combination of TTS coupled with our existing project/wind/rail programs creates a unique opportunity to create a strong, multi-faceted Projects/Rail/Over-Dimensional solutions team with engineering competencies at its core. TTS will be combined with existing BNSF Logistics U.S. operating units that perform like functions to create the North American leader in Project, Rail & Engineering Services.

Sincerely,

Raymond B. Greer

Domestic Update

Freight demand was soft in the first six months of 2015, putting pressure on our organic expansion efforts here at BNSF Logistics. The ATA reported that its For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index, which represents the actual tonnage hauled by trucks, fell steeply in February (3.1%) and again in April (1.4%), and rose just 1.1% in May (most recent reporting period). These trends in the first half are in sharp contrast to the steady rise in demand we experienced last year.

An inventory reduction has been occurring throughout the supply chain this year and factory output has been soft which have driven the low volumes, but that could be bottoming. There are signs that demand could rise in the second half – stronger June jobs, manufacturing, auto sales, consumer spending and housing reports. Internally we have focused on having the right staff in place to handle the surge that we remain optimistic will come.

As industry volume has eased, trucking supply and demand has come closer into balance, unlike the capacity squeeze we saw after Q1 2014 amid a strengthening US economy and freight held over from a harsh winter. Total spot truckload capacity has increased significantly over the past six months and

is up 113% compared to January 2014 with average weekly capacities up 38% versus 2014. Spot capacity continues to increase into July, up 17% in the past 30 days and 7% over the trailing 12 weeks.

In spite of the decreased demand coupled with increased spot capacity, we still managed to a strong profit performance through June as falling diesel fuel prices and solid pricing have helped offset the lacking revenue opportunities. These industry dynamics have also created a unique environment for us to spend more time developing our newer employees in the six US offices we opened in the past 16 months, as well as those we hired into our other ten offices during 2014. We still plan to open two more offices this year and are actively searching for those candidates now. In addition, we have invested heavily in technology and carrier relations initiatives in the first half (both covered in more depth in following articles) to allow us to become a more appealing transportation partner.

Again, we remain optimistic about the market and our prospects for the balance of the year and beyond and we are actively focusing on ways to provide more value to our employees, customers, carriers and partners.

The first half of 2015 has been dominated by congestion due to the west coast labor dispute and a broken infrastructure for international containerized shipments.

A contract has been signed between the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and Pacific Maritime Association (PMA), but the congestion remains steady, indicating that the problems creating the congestion go beyond the labor dispute.

Congestion eased off slightly after the contract was signed, but continues to be an issue not only at west coast ports, but also on the east coast. A combination of factors like bigger vessels, chassis issues and trucker shortages are just a few of the problems the industry is facing.

These continuing issues have created a huge amount of additional work which is absorbed by our operational teams. I would like to thank all of our

operators for doing a great job keeping up with the added daily challenges this has brought to each and every desk. THANK YOU.

Another challenge to our business has been the reduced shipping volume of the Oil & Gas Industry in 2014. Our Houston and Dallas offices, which service a bulk of the oil & gas related companies, are feeling a large impact.

Our sales force has been successful in bringing on new customers and the team is ahead of their budgeted sales goals. The additional business has helped us to close the gap on the reduced volume created by the oil & gas companies.

Overall, the international team has shown strong performance for the first half of the year and anticipates reaching all goals.

In regards to EDI, we have faced many challenges with overseas partners, and therefore have changed direction in order to help our operators improve productivity.

In the beginning of Q3 we will introduce a new process for operations and GSPs which will help us to reach our goals for higher productivity. We are excited about the changes coming and many thanks to our IT group for making this happen.

Outlook for the remainder of 2015:

Overall the market is soft and dropping spot rate levels are not a good indication for stable shipping volumes. However, we are optimistic for the remainder of the year due to our diverse customer base and strong sales force. We are consistently gaining market share and we will continue to do so in the 2nd half of 2015.

4 On The Move

BNSF Logistics recently unveiled our Blade Runner system at the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) annual conference in Orlando, FL. The Blade Runner system is a fixture free methodology for transporting blades utilized in utility scale wind turbines. The system is designed to move blades internationally via rail and highway networks throughout North America, as well as ocean transport between countries, with a key focus on import and export activity to and from North America. The system can therefore be utilized for blades that are manufactured in North America or foreign countries for either domestic or foreign installations.

Traditionally, wind turbine blades move from the factory with attached fixtures, one at the root end and one at the reinforced area near the tip end of the blade. These fixtures then stay affixed to the blade and travel with the blade throughout the supply chain until the blade is delivered to the wind farm. This method requires each mode of transport to design specific attachment devices or mechanisms to hold the blade fixture. As blades designs change and the length of the blades increases, these attachment devices must also change. The initial costs of these fixtures are a sizeable investment for the manufacturers and as the blades designs continue to change and the blades increase in size, either a new fixture must be built or the existing fixtures must be redesigned and retrofitted to accommodate the changes to the blade.

With the Blade Runner system the blade moves not with attached fixtures, but rather is placed into a securement device that holds the blade. The Blade Runner securement devices are mode specific, that is, they are a unique design that is built specifically for the mode of transport be it ocean, rail or highway. This eliminates the need for attached fixtures saving this investment costs from the manufacturers. In addition, the system was designed and built with universal use as a key requirement. This allows blades from 42 meters to 65+ meters to utilize the same mode specific securement devices regardless

For the rail system (pictured above) a focus was again given to the universal nature of the system such that the securement devices holding the root end and the reinforced area of the blade would not have to be redesigned for each blade design or blade length. All that is required is for the two frames holding the blade to be repositioned on the rail car to ensure the blade is held in the correct position. Another aspect of the rail system is the moveable root arm or frame which allows the root end of the blade to move from side to side on the car significantly improving clearance. The clearance is the maximum envelope or area that a blade will occupy as it traverses the rail network. This improvement is significant now, but will become even more critical as the blades continue to increase in length.

BNSF Logistics is currently in testing phase on all facets of the Blade Runner system and is working closely with many of the OEM’s in the North American market. For more information, please contact our wind energy team at [email protected].

of the blade manufacturer, the design of the blade or the length of the blade. This also reduces logistics costs through the elimination of redesign work that is necessary in the current method of attached fixtures.

The ocean system (pictured above) is designed to allow for loading of blades without fixtures into the securement devices at the factory, at the port of export or on board the vessel, depending on the specific needs and requirements of the exporting location. Two blades are nestled into a “cell” or “module” that once loaded can be stacked in a storage location if sufficient space is available at the port of export. Once sufficient cells have been assembled and accumulated, the movement of the cells to the vessel side and loading onto the vessel is a very quick process. The cells on the port are moved via reach stackers and then the vessel can be loaded using either shore cranes or ship’s gear. The same process holds true at the port of import, that is, the blades can be offloaded from the vessel either in the cell as a unit or individually with the cells being dismantled on the vessel. The blades are then removed from the cell on the dock, or as noted on the vessel, and moved to the next mode of transport whether it be highway or rail.

6 On The Move

As we engage new prospective customers the most common questions and concerns heard focus on our 3PL status and reservations around the stability, liability and risk exposure that dealing with 3rd party providers can sometimes bring. These are valid questions and legitimate concerns. Such concerns are not just shared by prospective customers but by many of our active customers as well. We welcome these questions because we know that BNSF Logistics has the answers that customers want and need to hear.

“Do you have your own assets?” There are two reasons this question will be asked. One has to do with issues around stability and strength, assuming that owning assets means the provider has deeper financial resources and thus will be more likely to remain a viable provider well into the future. First, anyone with a history in freight logistics knows that an asset based carrier can leave the market as suddenly and unexpectedly as a non-asset based provider. More importantly, BNSF Logistics is part of the BNSF and Berkshire Hathaway organizations and has greater expertise and more years of experience in the transportation industry than many asset based carriers.

If the asset question is more focused on the belief that asset ownership means a provider is more capable and more likely to provide capacity when such resources are tight, I’m afraid that can be a faulty assumption. BNSF Logistics has not invested in company owned trucks, not for lack of the financial resources required, but because it would diminish our value proposition to our customers. When a company invests in hard assets, they can become a slave to those assets. For many, job one each day is to ensure those assets are utilized as efficiently as possible to maximize return on capital invested. Customer preferences and needs often take a necessary backseat to asset utilization planning. Since BNSF Logistics’ most important asset is our people, we are able to focus first, foremost and always on meeting the needs of our customers regardless of what impact those needs might have on asset utilization. As a 3PL provider, BNSF Logistics has a nearly limitless supply of capacity from contractual relationships with thousands of approved carriers. With such an enormous pool of carrier capacity to work with, we’ll have both an interest and available capacity to serve a destination that your asset based providers might consider undesirable given their asset deployment plan. More capacity

Jim CraigChief Marketing Officer

Why a 3PL? Why BNSF Logistics?

and greater flexibility is why every shipper should have a tier one 3PL on their approved provider list.

“I have concerns about broker responsibility and risk.” Frankly, those are valid concerns and it pays to be diligent to ensure you’re only working with brokers or 3PLs that seek to protect you and your interests and have reason to share your concern for financial exposure. Small, under-funded brokers have an exit strategy should a major claim, accident or bad debt situation arise, and that exit strategy usually means their customers are left with liabilities and expenses that weren’t in the budget. One of BNSF Logistics’ top 20 customers has had several brokers exit the market in the last 12 months, which may leave them with unpaid carrier responsibilities, essentially having to pay twice for the same shipments. That’s not the most significant risk of using a questionable 3PL provider. Should they, in an effort to offer a more competitive price or enhance their margin incrementally, choose a carrier with inadequate insurance, a poor safety record or other “shortcuts” to reduce their overhead, the ultimate cost usually finds its way back to the freight owner. BNSF Logistics has a brand, reputation and frankly a financial foundation that requires protection and because we know those risks as well as you do, we work hard to ensure our mutual interests are protected. Carriers are vetted, measured and tracked to ensure proper insurance, operating authority and safety ratings meet both our and your exacting standards. Cutting corners to save a few dollars is not in your or our best interests when it means potential consequences that would dwarf any such savings. In the world of 3PL freight logistics, you usually get what you pay for.

We’re proud of the BNSF Logistics brand and we’re committed to our Values as a company because we believe it brings greater value to our customers and we’re pleased that our customers agree.

• People: We recognize our employees as the cornerstone of our success.

• Integrity: We practice ethical behavior in all aspects of our business.

• Profitability: We value profitable growth for the stability & reinvestment it allows.

• Accountability: We are accountable to our people, customers & partners.

• Creativity: We encourage new ideas and concepts.

Pete Dutton Technology Services

The IT group continues to have a busy summer working through three major projects that will support the continued growth of the business.

MercuryGate rollout

The Godfrey and Versailles offices have been transitioned to MercuryGate leaving only the Springdale building and the two largest Agent groups remaining. The team is working with MercuryGate to address the customer specific EDI issues that remain in Versailles, OH and Springdale, AR. We anticipate starting the Springdale, AR implementation in August and concluding in September. Once the Springdale building is complete, the IT team will work with our largest Agent group to transition the business to MercuryGate which will conclude the roll out to the business. The team will then be able to focus on conversion of the intermodal business in addition to developing and deploying as many of the requested user enhancements as make sense.

Data Center migration

The IT team successfully migrated the corporate server and network infrastructure from the Springdale, AR building to a 3rd party hosted facility in Little Rock, AR. This was accomplished in two moves: all of the servers were moved over Memorial Day weekend and the phone infrastructure moved over July fourth weekend. The new environment will allow the business to grow and scale much more efficiently as well as enhance disaster recovery and business continuity capability.

New Springdale building

In August the IT group will focus on getting the new Springdale, AR office set up to insure a smooth transition from the current location. This will involve working with the contractors to insure all of the required cabling is complete, the fire alarm system works as expected, the access control system is configured, including employee badges loaded into the system, and all of the TVs and projectors work as planned. The new building construction is on pace to be completed on Friday, August 14th, with furniture to be delivered and installed the following week. We anticipate being able to begin moving people into the new space on or around September 1st. Fun fact – there are more than 750 network connections in the new building that will need to be tested and labeled to support the 200 people moving into the new location.

IT Update

We are eagerly awaiting the completion of the new U.S. Headquarters building (pictured left) in Springdale, AR. In April, as a way to commemorate the process, one of the steel roof beams was moved to the edge of the building site and employees were invited to sign the beam before it was added to the structure.

Global Project Cargo Highlights

BNSF Logistics handled the transport of a crane system from Savannah, Georgia, to Illichevsk, Ukraine. The cargo consisted of 40 parts for a crane that measured 85 feet in length, with a total volume of 3,500 cubic meters. The shipment was transported as breakbulk and containerized cargo on a BBC Chartering vessel. In addition, we shipped 35’ x 40’ SOC’s containers. BNSFL’s Houston Global Project Center was in charge of the pre-carriage to Savannah, port handling, ocean freight, as well as the purchase of all the SOC’s.

The BNSFL Global Project Center headed up the move of cryogenic tanks from Mississippi to Ohio. The cargo included 3 cryogenic tanks that measured 132’ x 17’ x 18’ and weighed 242,000 lbs. each. The picture shows the transport from the factory to the MS barge dock. From there, the tanks were shipped in three hopper barges to Indiana where they were then trans-loaded to deck barges for the lake journey. Finally, they were trucked to their final destination in Ohio.

BNSFL’s Houston Global Project Center handled the transport of one Cold Box with 536 metric tons with dimensions of 74 x 7.55 x 5.33 meter. The transport went from Genoa, Italy to Ashtabula, Ohio. We chartered the Ms Palmerton from Combi-Lift for the 21 day voyage to the port at Lake Erie just in time before the closing of the lakes for the winter season. The vessel, equipped with 2 x 450 ton cranes, was ideal to load and discharge the the Cold Box at the port of departure and destination. The Cold Box was directly discharged onto a 4 x 6 axel Goldhofer trailer to be transported 5 km from the port to the jobsite.

Carrier DevelopmentInitiatives

Lance O’DanielSupplier Services

Availability of capacity is a prevalent challenge to the transportation industry. Volatility in capacity (too much or not enough) represents unique and ever changing challenges for shippers and their logistics partners. Carriers are more selective in which shippers and logistics providers that they work with. In an effort to differentiate and become a more appealing transportation partner, BNSF Logistics has undertaken several initiatives.

One major initiative was aimed at making it easier and less time consuming to set up new suppliers. One of our strengths is ensuring that we use quality service providers for our customers, and our qualifications process is a key to that. We set out to create a more efficient process that would not sacrifice quality. To accomplish this, the BNSFL Supplier Services team partnered with Registry Monitoring Insurance Services (RMIS) to create a web-based registration process for our carriers. This online registration process, combined with their professional insurance monitoring service, will create a much more efficient process for carrier registration and qualification.

We began implementing this new onboarding process in February, and we have seen a large increase in carrier registrations via this method. In 2014, BNSF Logistics averaged about 440 new carrier setups per month. The chart below illustrates the growth we’ve seen, largely due to the ease of onboarding.

We continue to work on the systems integration that will make this process even more efficient and will soon expand

this offering to our Canadian and International carriers, as well.

Another initiative aimed at making BNSF Logistics more attractive for carriers to work with is to improve the procurement process for requesting and obtaining carrier rates. Carrier feedback indicated that the bid tool that we were using was cumbersome and prevented many carriers from participating in Procurement events. After evaluating several options, we determined that the best option was for our Information Technology team to develop our own bid tool. This tool was designed with carrier use in mind and is much easier for the carrier to identify the lanes that they want to bid on, and to easily submit the rates back to us. Initial feedback from the carrier base has been very positive and has led to significant improvement in carrier participation in our procurement events. This in turn has led to an increase in carrier options and a reduction in purchased transportation costs.

An initiative on the horizon is the development of a carrier loyalty program. This program will offer carriers the opportunity to receive discount programs and other benefits as a result of working with BNSF Logistics. Participation in the program will require carriers to haul a minimum number of loads each month, and to maintain a service level threshold. Carriers participating in the program will receive loyalty cards for their drivers (sample below). These cards will allow the carrier to purchase fuel at a discounted rate when they haul freight for BNSF Logistics. Additionally, this program will allow these carriers access to other offers that are still in the works. Discount program possibilities include: oil changes, tires, truck washes, scales, equipment purchases, and electronic logging devices.

While significant progress has been made in the first half of 2015, there is much work to be done in the second half and beyond. We will continue to strive to be the logistics provider that all carriers want to work for.

Squat Challenge Employees were provided a daily schedule for squats. By the end of the 31st day, participants could complete 175 squats. Those who successfully completed this challenge were entered into a drawing to win various prizes. Below are some comments regarding this challenge:

“What a challenge! I enjoyed participating and have completed the month of May. I enjoyed it so much that I will continue the challenge for the rest of the summer!”

“I thought the water challenge was hard, but the squat challenge has surpassed them all!”

“Even though it was difficult and challenging, I am improving my overall health so I plan to continue to do these each month.”

Charity Walk/RunAll locations/employees were encouraged to participate in a local community charity walk/run or obstacle race (pictured above and right) during the 2nd quarter of 2015. We have seen tremendous participation from employees across North America and around the world.

The Be Your Best Self Health & Wellness Program would not be successful without our Wellness Champions. Each location has a designated Wellness Champion who acts as a point person and executes activities throughout the year.

“I want to personally thank all of those who are on the Health & Wellness Committee and who have actively participated and supported the program.”

-Heather Kinyon Health & Wellness Committee Chair

The BNSF Logistics “Be Your Best Self Health & Wellness Program” began in April 2014 and has since taken off with extraordinary support from both executives and employees. We continue to offer a variety of different items each quarter such as a company challenges, lunch-n-learns, newsletters and more. These challenges are meant to be difficult, as this not only promotes a healthier lifestyle, but confidence as well. Listed below are a few of the challenges:

Planks-giving In November, the participants were challenged to plank every day for 30 days. Each day they gradually added more time to their plank until they reached a goal of 3 full minutes on the 30th day! If the employee achieved this goal, their name was placed into a random drawing for various prizes.

Biggest Loser During the first quarter of 2015, BNSF Logistics participated in a Biggest Loser Challenge. We had a total of 132 employees companywide participate. Together we lost a grand total of 985 lbs. The winners of each branch location received their local cash award and vacation days.

A couple months after the challenge ended, we offered a surprise weigh-in. Those that weighed below their final weigh-in would go into a companywide drawing to win a gift card and vacation day. 19 employees proved that they understand weight-loss is not about dieting; it’s about making a life-style change.

As a 3rd party logistics provider, we can coordinate logistics services to move freight anywhere in the world. In fact, we can even put freight on the International Space Station.

In March of this year, we essentially did exactly that. Working with one of our European GSPs (Global Service Providers), our Houston Global Project Center Team coordinated the movement of a coffee maker from the manufacturer in Italy to NASA in Houston, Texas. From there it would make its way onto the International Space Station.

This wasn’t your ordinary Mr. Coffee machine, but a “zero-gravity interstellar coffee delivery centrifuge” that required special cargo liability coverage (special thanks to the BNSF Logistics Risk Team) since it was valued slightly more than 3 - 4 Lamborghinis. This space-age coffee maker will be the first capsule espresso coffee machine that can work in the extreme conditions of space. Amnon Ehrlich, Vice President, Director of Global Sales, lead the efforts for this project and the Houston domestic branch team provided the final-mile, white glove delivery service to NASA Headquarters.

On May 3rd, 2015, the first espresso coffee was drunk in space by Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti. The espresso coffee maker was welcomed with great enthusiasm by all of the crew members aboard the space station. This was one small step for man and one giant leap for coffee enthusiasts who might one day dream of going into space.

Whether you need to move it across the street, around the globe, or even into space, BNSF Logistics lives by its tag line “Yeah, We Can Do That”!

Yeah, We Can Do That!
