Dr. Ken Hargreaves, in an editorial

in the October 2004 JOE, wrote

about “On Shoulders of Giants.” In

this editorial, Dr. Hargreaves talks

about the dearth of clinical scientists

and how it is important to develop

a new generation of these scientists.

In passing, he remarks about the loss

of those giants that came before and

that had passed on within the year

(2003-04) that he wrote his editorial.

He named I. B. Bender, Sam Seltzer,

Jacob Freedland and others who had

contributed so much to our early base

of knowledge.

Since that editorial, we can add

two more giants to the departed list,

and those are Herb Schilder (2006)

and Franklin Weine (July 10, 2012).

Frank was not only one of my partners

in practice for over 25 years, but he

was a friend. Frank wanted everyone

to excel in our specialty. He gave

of himself freely, as evidenced by

the Louis I. Grossman award from

the AAE. e award recognizes an

author for cumulative publication of

signicant research studies that have

made an extraordinary contribution to

endodontology. Frank was a Diplomate

of the American Board of Endodontics

back when there were even fewer than

20% of the AAE membership that were

Boarded.

When I was “growing up” in

endodontics, I was learning from

Seltzer, Bender, Schilder, Weine,

Naidorf, Ingle, and many others. My

past giants were Coolidge, Johnston,

Jasper, Blaney, and Grossman just

to name a few. As we try to keep up

with the latest endodontic literature,

we can still nd references in the

bibliographies of the current literature

to those past giants. But those

references to the past giants are getting

fewer and fewer. Much of the earlier

work is being repeated with more

current and valid scientic methods.

e giants had it right, as much of our

current clinical research is proving. As

Mark Twain said; “a favorite theory

of mine—to wit, that no occurrence

is sole and solitary, but is merely

a repetition of a thing which has

happened before, and perhaps oen.”

at is when I ask myself, have I read

that before?

portfolios continues to improve each year. !is

November in St. Louis, the Board has reservations

for 132 candidates to sit for the orals. Margie Hannen

and the Board had to add an additional half day to the

three day schedule to accommodate the entire group.

And the numbers are starting to climb with the case

history portfolios also. Building on Dr. Chand’s

remarks in this edition of the Pinnacle, here are some

additional numbers about candidates taking the

orals, turning in their portfolios and now becoming

Diplomates.

Over the past years, with the old schedule of written

"rst, portfolio second and orals last, the big drop

o# came a$er the written, with a small percentage

submitting the case history portfolio. !ose that

passed the portfolio o$en went on to take the orals.

Indications are that those numbers are improving,

thanks to the e#orts of the Board in making the whole

process more user-friendly and equally as challenging.

Of the nine dental specialties, our goal is to have the

greatest percentage of Boarded members. We still have

a long way to go.

College of Diplomates continues to be committed

to one of their most important goals—Mentoring.

With a group of 15 mentors spanning across the US

and Canada, we continue to provide proper guidance,

support, time management advice etc. through

the entire Case history portofolio and Oral exam

preparation for the ABE candidates, to help them reach

their goal of becoming a Diplomate of the ABE.

With a record high of 132 candidates signed up to

challenge the upcoming Orals in Nov 2012 this year

and 67 candidates having turned in their Case history

portfolios for Oct 2012, our Mentors are working

hard to see our candidates successfully pass the ABE

Boards. With currently 25 candidates already being

mentored following the Case submission Oct 2012, we

have new candidates already requesting mentors for

the upcoming April 2013 session.

71 candidates received their Diplomate pins in April

2012 at the Grossman Luncheon held in Boston, out

of which 50 candidates were mentored by the COD

mentoring committee.

Dr. Keith Krell’ s conference call is now live to listen

under Study aids and Mentoring, which has proven to

be extremely helpful to candidates challenging their

Orals. !e call is conducted approximately a month

prior to the ABE oral exam, dates are continuously

updated on the website.

Live Interviews on the COD website in Dec 2012!

Hear what are mentors have to say to candidates

who are considering Board certi"cation and seeking

a mentor. Listen to candidates who have successfully

passed Board certi"cation and how mentoring helped

them through the journey!

Please join us to hear about exciting advances in

Endodontics at this year’s College of Diplomates and

University of Texas, Houston’s ABE Board Review

Course. e program begins Friday, February 8, 2013

and extends two and a half days ending mid day Sunday,

February 10th. It will be presented at the University of

Texas, Houston’s new, state-of-the-art health science

center in UT Research Park on the south campus of

the Texas Medical Center. Emphasis will be placed

on historic and current evidence based literature to

assist those planning to take the written or oral ABE

Board exam. Visit the College of Diplomate’s web

site (collegeofdiplomates.org) to view the wide range

of topics. World-renowned speakers will present the

information in a spectacular new venue taking full

advantage of advanced presentation technologies.

Participants will receive a complimentary course book

containing a copy of all lecture materials. Many previous

participants have rated this course as indispensible

when preparing for the ABE Board exam.

is course is ABE approved for recertication credit

as well as providing 17 CERP credits.

Looking forward to seeing you at the review—

Impact of New Technology on Endodontic Treatment Outcomes August 15––19Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & SpaSonoma, CA

College of Diplomates Summer Conference 2012The College of Diplomates held its 2012

Summer Conference at the Fairmont

Sonoma Mission Inn in Sonoma,

California from August 15-19, 2012.

!e theme of the conference was “Impact

of New Technologies on Endodontic

Treatment Outcomes.” 5 speakers updated the

group on the status of current technologies.

Dr. Paul Wesselink discussed CBCT; Dr. Anil

Kishen addressed the new technology of

irrigation; Dr. Ove Peters, Instrumentation;

Dr. Gerald Glickman, obturation and Dr.

George Bruder, endodontic surgery. On

Saturday morning, Dr. Shimon Friedman

presented a comprehensive review of

endodontic treatment outcomes.

!e lectures were held in the mornings

and the attendees and guests had the

a"ernoons to meet with friends and enjoy

the hotel and the beautiful Sonoma/Napa

area. Needless to say the wineries and

restaurants were well attended.

On Wednesday evening there was a

“Welcome Reception” and on Saturday

evening a “Dinner Reception” at the Golf

Course Club House.

Judging from the survey of the

100 attendees, the conference

was a success. !e group also

responded with suggestions

for future locations and topics.

!e next meeting of the College

of Diplomates will be the Board

Review Course in Houston from

February 8-10 2013. Planning for the 2014

Summer Conference will begin very soon.
