Here we are nearing the end of a wonderful holiday season. As we all do at some point during this time, I like to take time and reflect on the year, the people, the projects, the ups and downs and all of the ingredients that went into making this past year what it was.

As an organization, we’ve grown in many ways. Our membership numbers have risen to levels that we haven’t seen in quite some time. In support of that growth, our Board has created new or updated many existing benefits to enhance our members’ experience. As I mentioned in our last Newsletter, some of those areas are:

• Bringing in bigger name speakers for seminars and our convention to provide the latest in techniques and processes. We’ve also created a group discount rate program to engage our sister organizations to participate. By doing this, the cost of the seminars are either defrayed significantly or completely covered by visitors. The result is that the programs are paying for themselves keeping more monies in our coffers, which we can then use to further enhance our member experiences. • Completely new Image competition program. With monies saved we were able to invest in a new image competition program that you probably have already heard of. You DEFINITELY want to enter competition this year and check out all that this new program has to offer to entrants and viewers alike. • PPAM Member Degree program enhancements. Not only is earning your PPAM Degrees a great way to be recognized by your peers, but it is also a perfect marketing opportunity to demonstrate your capabilities and dedication to your prospects and clients. • New Member IDs are now being used. If you don’t have yours, contact Joyce Holt at [email protected] with your headshot and she’ll take care of you. • Updated Bylaws are ready to be approved. We as an organization have to be able to function in today’s fast paced world. In order to do that efficiently and legally, we needed to ensure that our Bylaws, the document that outlines how we function as an organization, were updated to allow for new technologies and business practices to be leveraged. By doing this, we are able to govern our organization more efficiently, reducing some of the volunteer’s time that is required to make things happen.

As we look forward to the start of a new year and our convention, as an organization,

we should be quite proud of our accomplishments this past year and look forward to some exciting new challenges on the horizon. Be sure to get involved by contacting our great Volunteer Chair Lisa Tommaney at [email protected] to see how you can help us grow.

I want to wish everyone a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

PPAM Member SpotlightIn our new feature a PPAM member (or two) will be “spotlighted” where they’ll be asked a few questions and include one of their favorite photographs. It’s true we see each other at events but we often don’t really know much about our fellow members – so here’s hoping for new conversations to start!

Meet Dawn Norris, CPP of Dawn Norris Photography, Newburyport, MA

Dawn specializes in Fine Art Portraits and who for the past decade has dedicated her career “to crafting fine art photographic portraits that reveal the authentic lifestyle of the animals we share our lives with in a pure, candid, and original manner.” – Visit Dawn’s website to see her beautiful imagery.

1. How many years in business? “Eleven”.

2. Why photography? “Nothing else I’ve ever experienced can get me into the “zone” like being behind the lens and creating a visual history. It’s an addiction I’ve had since I was 8 years old and my dad gave me my first opportunity to photograph with a 35mm Minolta.”

3. Favorite piece of equipment? “135mm 2.0 Canon L Lens - it’s the unsung hero of the Canon lineup. It’s super sharp, fast, versatile, lightweight, and ‘like buttah’.”

4. What’s your best piece of advice to someone just starting out? “Learn basic business acumen so you can make a living from your passion. Be a business person first, the photography will always be at your core and the passion that drives you forward, but the business acumen will allow you to stay the path of photography.”

5. What’s the best piece of advice someone ever gave you? “If you don’t ask, you don’t get.” - Nevada Wier

6. Best & worst moment on a job? “Best moment: Photographing wolves. “Worst moment: When a personal photograph of mine (posted on Facebook) ended up on multiple billboards and becoming part of a business’ branding without my permission and without getting payment or restitution for the theft of the image. It cost me $350 to find out from my lawyer that there wasn’t anything I could do about it (other than send a cease and desist letter) because the image wasn’t filed with the US Copyright office.”

7. Interesting fact about you? The day of my sixteenth birthday I earned my solo pilots license for an airplane, then I went to get my driver’s license later that same day.

Image Competition at PPAM 2014

Cathy Broderick and Paula Swift, 2014 Image Competition Co-Chairs

We are so excited for the upcoming Convention, and of course, Image Competition! Formerly known as “Print Competition”, the name has been changed to reflect the fact that Digital Images are also accepted. Prints are still preferred; after all, you can’t hang a blue ribbon on a file, right? And it’s great to display those pieces with their ribbons in your place of business for your clients to see.

There are a few changes to Competition this year. We will be using the online registration software Printcompetition.com. It’s a free service to PPAM users where you will upload a digital version of your entry (even if it’s a physical print), pay your entry fees and register all your information. If you are entering prints you will need to ship or drop your case off to Cathy Broderick Print Co-Chair the week before. This software streamlines the process for PPAM and offers great benefits to our members. You can opt to receive a text or email when your image is judged, or when it’s coming up soon in the judging. How cool is that?? The service also offers an optional premium pay level ($40 a year) where you can view the archived images of other competitions and their scores.

The Special Masters Award has been renamed “Masters Choice Award” to better reflect that it is an award CHOSEN by our PPAM Masters; you don’t NEED to be a Master to enter. In fact, you can’t be! That’s a category that has always had some confusion so we wanted to clear that up this year. Remember, this cat-egory has to be entirely completed by the maker; capture, Photoshop work, if applicable, PRINTING (yes, this is a print category only, no digitals) and finishing.

The Creative Theme category (also print only) will now be part of the regular judging rather than popular ballot vote as in the past. The theme this year is WILD and we can’t wait to see what you come up with to win this trophy!

The PPAM Specialty Award category this year is best “High School Senior” print entry. The winner of this category receives a gift card to one of PPAM’s favorite vendors.

All this info is available in the 2014 Convention - Image Competition Rules section of ppam.com. That’s where you will find detailed instructions on how to enter, tech specs of your files, the rules, deadlines and all important PRIZE info. Image Competition is one of THE GREATEST ways to improve your photography. It’s exciting, educational and great for promoting to your clients. We know our photography has improved a great deal in the years since we started entering Competition, so JUMP IN!!

Along with us, Cathy Broderick and Paula Swift as Image Competition Co-Chairs, the 2014 Image Competition jury panel will be:

Jury Chairperson: Ed Pedi with Jurors; Bernie Littlefield, Don Chick, Lynn Damon, Nylora Bruleigh, Steve Bedell and Walter van Dusen.

DAVE BROSHA

“Mastering Creative Light” Monday, February 24 ~ 9:00 A.M. - 3:30 PM

Have you ever wanted to learn how to effectively combine any kind of ambient, environmental light with your off-camera flash and/or studio lights to create beautiful, artistic images? Join Dave Brosha as he combines a lecture and an in-the-field photo shoot, going through his entire end-to-end process in terms of conceptualizing and then executing a creative photo shoot.

Special attention will be given to the notion of balance when using ambient light; sometimes the most powerful strobe-lit images using the tiniest fraction of artificial lighting, while in creating other images can make more sense to completely overpower the available light. This seminar will discuss this principle in great deal and offer hands-on shooting opportunities to help you master the concept yourself.

Holding a passion for the world and an eye for the beauty it contains, northern commercial, personal, and landscape photographer Dave Brosha is on a continual journey to seek out and capture the beauty of this world – whether it’s the beauty of some of the most extreme and pristine environments in the world, or the beauty of some of a person’s most soul-revealing moments.

From a very young age we are taught to share and that it’s better to give than to receive. So, still in the spirit of giving I’d like to give a really big THANK YOU to a few people who I believe share plenty and give way more than they receive.

In early December I attended the 2nd of 3 Image Competition Prep Seminars at Andy Joliat’s lovely studio in Lexington. There weren’t many attendees (only me and one other person) however; there were 3 other people there that took the time from their busy professional and personal lives for 4 plus hours on a Sunday during the busiest time of the year, to help others who were interested in participating in the 2014 image competition.

Cathy Broderick, Paula Swift and Andy Joliat were there, well prepared and ready to educate the “group” on the new method of competition and to chat about our images and what could make them stronger, better, more compelling in the hopes of earning a blue ribbon. Andy gave wonderful, constructive, thoughtful insight and feedback as did Cathy and Paula. They made it a safe environment for sharing your work, without judgments, just helpful suggestions.

Cathy and Paula all told will have given up 3 days to educate and inform about the new Image Competition…not counting the behind the scenes, pulling it all together hours that were spent on this project. But, they also had help from Nancy Green who spent a Sunday at Cathy’s studio for the first prep seminar working behind the scenes as well in preparation. Cathy and Paula will do it one more time at Ed Pedi’s studio on January 8, where no doubt Ed will educate, inform and entertain in the charming way Ed does.

I was given (and learned) a lot that Sunday afternoon. Although, I’ve competed once or twice before, I attended to push myself because I get stuck, make lots of excuses as to why I don’t have time, don’t have the images, my work is not good enough…blah blah blah…but what I was given and learned that day was less about me and more about the selfless acts from these folks. They give of their precious time to help others, help our fine organization, help our members become better photographers, better business people and I want to applaud them.

So, I want to THANK YOU Cathy Broderick, Paula Swift, Nancy Green, Andy Joliat and Ed Pedi for your countless, selfless hours of sharing and giving (not only to me) but in dedication to your craft and to your organization. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Fingers crossed for some blue ribbons!

Susan Asaro, Vice President of Communications
