Jobs Done Well.
Kiewit Underground is a leader in the tunneling industry. Headquartered in
Omaha, Neb., we construct underground facilities across the U.S. and Canada.
We have proven tunneling experience with a variety of tunneling and excavation
methods. Our roadheader projects include:
Roadheader
Devil’s Slide Tunnels
This tunnel is constructed through granitic, sandstone, and shale formations
using both roadheader and drill-and-blast excavation methods. Ground support
includes a combination of shotcrete, rock bolts, and lattice girders installed
sequentially with excavation. Primary tunneling equipment includes AM105
roadheaders, Sandvik drill jumbos, Potenza shotcrete robots and Sandvik
bolters. A reinforced cast-in-place concrete lining is placed upon completion
of excavation.
Wheeler Gulch Tunnel
The Wheeler Gulch project included the excavation of a 3,200-foot-long tunnel
24 feet wide by 20 feet tall. The tunnel was excavated using an Alpine ATM 105
roadheader. Dywidag rock bolts and welded wire mesh were then installed for
rock support. The portal face is supported with 20- and 30-foot spilling bolts as
well as shotcrete and welded wire mesh.
El Túnel (North Road Reconstruction)
This project included the construction of a 613-foot-long, 14-foot-diameter water conveyance tunnel through the Diamond Drive embankment. A road header performed the excavation. A top heading and bench removal process was used. The tunnel was lined with reinforcing steel and 1-foot-thick shotcrete.
