On CallFirst Realty Captures Top Awards at RHA and NEAHMA Like another Boston-based team we all know and love, First Realty has experienced its most winning season ever in 2013. Beginning with earning national recognition with the NAHMA Vanguard Award for Union Crossing earlier this year, the company has since then taken home several of the highest honors presented at the annual conferences of both the Rental Housing Association (RHA), and New England Affordable Housing Management Association (NEAHMA).

The RHA awarded Union Crossing its Community Excellence Award as this year’s best affordable community. The UC entry will go on to compete for the National Apartment Association’s Paragon Award, won by another First Realty property, Camelot Court two years ago. Congra- tulations once again to the entire Lawrence-based management team, including Regional Manager Bill McGrath, Property Manager Jennifer Coa, Management Assistant Janna Perez, Maintenance Me- chanics Pablo Ramirez, Jorge Pagan, and Eduardo Feliz Alcantara, andPorterTeofilaRichardson.

ON CALL FALL 2013

First Realty Captures Top AWARDS at RHA and NEAHMA . . . continued from cover page

Three young residents of First Realty apartment communities also joined the winners’ circle at the NEAHMA conference. In an unprecedented winning record for one company, First Realty posters from The Fairways, Davis Commons and Bay Village were the only New England posters selected from thousands of entries for placement on the national NAHMA calendar. Congratulations to RADS Jordan Lareau, Rob Connolly, and Dan Komanapalli for the out-standing poster submissions from their respec-tive properties.

When it came to the awarding of professional designations, First Realty employees were again at the forefront, with Cece Tavares and Gerard Jean Leger earning their National Affordable Housing Professional (NAHP) credentials, and with nineteen of our maintenance staff ob-taining their National Accredited Housing Maintenance Technician (NAHMT) or Na-tional Accredited Housing Maintenance Superintendent (NAHMS) designations.

Nancy Hogan, who serves as the NEAHMA Vice President/Agency Liaison in addition to her role as a First Realty vice president, moderated a special regional Agency Forum at the annual fall conference. Speakers included HUD officials, as well as top housing officials from all the state agencies in New England.

First Realty Earns MassHousing Award

Davis Commons Manager Kerry Tribble and Assistant Manager Julie Fermin,

with MBE Award.

First Realty has earned a MassHousing Award for achieving Minority Business Enterprises (MBE) & Woman Business Enterprises (WBE) goals at Davis Commons.

The company has received this annual award from MassHous-ing seven times since 2001, including an Award of Excellence for the region’s highest MBE & WBE percentage achievement in 2007. Regional Manager Bill McGrath along with Property Manager Kerry Tribble and Assistant Manager Julie Fermin from recent Community of Quality Award-winning property Davis Commons accepted the award at a ceremony at MassHousing on October 25.

Here We GROW AgainSeveral properties are joining the First Realty portfolio through the fall and as of the first of the year. The Braewell Condominium, which consists of 91 units in Quincy, Mass. will be managed by one of the newest members of the Condo Management team, Rosemary Riccio.

The company is establishing a beachhead on Cape Cod with the addition of Wells Court, an affordable rental commu-nity for the elderly located in Brewster. The New Business Committee is actively seeking new leads for managing prop-erties in that vicinity to build on that success.

And finally, one of our existing non-profit clients in Provi-dence has selected First Realty to manage several of its other rental communities. West Elmwood Housing Develop-ment Corp., for whom we already manage Westfield Lofts and Westfield Commons, has now turned over its Stephens Hall, Bellevue Apts., and Hope Renewed rental communities, a total of 57 affordable apartments. All of them will be managed from the Westfield Lofts on site management office.

Matt Dillon RetiresColleagues from the Brandywyne Village staff and the home office gathered for lunch October 17 at Jimmy’s Steer House in Saugus to pay tribute to Brandywyne Superintendent Matt Dillon, who has retired after 24 years of outstanding service. The property was transformed during his tenure, including the construction of the Community Center building, the Massport sound-proofing project, property-wide renovations and landscaping improve-ments, and most importantly, Brandywyne winning the Communi-ty of Quality award as the nation’s Exemplary Family community.

Matt was joined at the luncheon by son, Matt, Jr. and daughter, Lisa. In the photo is Matt with Lisa and BWV RAD Ryan Piazza.

Residents Earn Scholarships, Thanks to Our RADsThe NAHMA Educational Foundation has in the past made small scholarship awards to residents attending post-high school job training, or higher education programs such as college, junior college or Vo-tech. This year, one of the goals for First Realty Resident Activities Directors (RADs) was to assist residents who met the Foundation’s criteria to submit a scholarship application for review. Residents of several properties were awarded $2500 education scholarships for the current school year:

4 A Canterbury Place resident is attending UMASS Boston (RAD: Fabiola Decius)

4 A resident of The Fairways in Worcester is attending Westfield State University

4 A Stony Brook Commons resident is attending Bentley University (Gene Austin/Elba Rudder)

4 A Greenwoods resident is a freshman at Massasoit Community College (Stephenie Jones)

4 A Davis Commons teen will study at Massachusetts College for Liberal Arts (Rob Connolly)

4 A sophomore from Brandywyne is a student at UMASS Boston (Daphne Binder/RyanPiazza)

This represents a total of $17,500 in scholarship money awarded by the NAHMA Educational Foundation to First Realty college bound residents. Congratulations to the students and to the RADs who facilitated their applications!
