IM GINE Creating a wider circle of community Summer 2012 Issue 54 Meet the staff Colin Baillie – Fundraising Manager I joined the Inclusion Melbourne team at the end of November, having previously done some fundraising work for the organisation a couple of years ago. My role will be to work closely with staff volunteers and the board to grow our support base and income from various new sources. I will also work to build the marketing capacity and profile of the organisation over time. Specifically, I will be focusing on engaging larger scale partners from the philanthropic and business communities. This is a really exciting time to be introducing the innovative work done at Inclusion Melbourne to new external audiences and potential supporters. Prior to joining Inclusion Melbourne I enjoyed over 15 years working as a fundraising and business development specialist in the not for profit sector both in Australia and overseas. I have had the opportunity to work across many different organisations over this period, ranging from universities and research institutes to disability organisations and charities. Previously a teacher, my background in fundraising started in South Africa where I worked in the squatter settlements in and around Johannesburg to establish numerous bridging schools for disadvantaged and learning disabled students. I helped to establish the Sparrow Educational Trust and spent several years fundraising internationally to resource the schools we established. I had the privilege of meeting Nelson Mandela and shared an award from the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund in 1998 for the Trust’s work amongst disadvantaged communities. Fourteen years ago, Melbourne became home to my wife and two daughters when we immigrated from South Africa. I remain heavily committed to serving in the community sector and I am delighted to be part of the wonderful team at Inclusion Melbourne. “On behalf of Inclusion Melbourne’s board and staff, I would like to wish you all the very best for the festive season and wish you and your family every success in the New Year.” Daniel Leighton, CEO

IM GINE Creating a wider circle of community Summer 2012 Issue 54

Meet the staff Colin Baillie – Fundraising Manager

I joined the Inclusion Melbourne team at the end of November, having previously done some fundraising work for the organisation a couple of years ago.

“On behalf of Inclusion Melbourne’s board and staff, I would like to wish you all the very best for the festive season and wish you and your family every success in the New Year.”

Outstanding community serviceJEAN WALLACE IS A KIND, CARING & DEDICATED PERSON WHO HAS GIVEN HER TIME, ENERGY & ENTHUSIASM TO VOLUNTEER WITH INCLUSION MELBOURNE SINCE 13TH JULY 1999.

In October Jean was one of a number of volunteers who were awarded the Caroline Chisholm Award by Federal MP Anna Burke, & recognised for her outstanding service to the community.

For many years Jean had been a volunteer tutor in a classroom setting, including at Deakin

University & Phoenix Park Community Centre. Once a week from 1999 to August 2011 Jean had supported a number of students to advance their communication, literacy & numeracy skills – and in particular Beck Clift.

Last year Beck was able to move into a home of her own, and then decided to continue her education one-on-one at her home. So Jean became a home tutor and not only was she able to develop the formal education provided to Beck, she was also able to give Beck practical guidance in running a house. Beck’s father Tony says, “Jean is involved in all aspects of Beck’s life especially in regards to her independent living.

She is a wonderful person who has great patience & perseverance and there has been significant development in Beck’s learning.”

Congratulations and Thank You Jean!

Anna Burke & Jean Wallace

Golfing ladies always generous

On a spring evening in November Nicole & I attended the Mentone Ladies Golf Dinner. It was a formal dress occasion and we were very excited to be seeing the ladies who we had met at the lunch in October.

On arrival at the beautiful golf course at Dingley we were warmly greeted by the golf ladies and guided to our table. We had brought along a gift from Inclusion Melbourne for the winner of the Gawith Villa trophy, and it was placed on the long table full of prizes set up for the golfers. The generous women from the Mentone Golf Club have been fundraising for our organisation since 1961. Nicole & I thanked those present on receipt of the money which had been raised for Inclusion Melbourne.

Tess Lynch, Volunteer Manager

Thanks for helping out!

Thank you to the Year 12 Lauriston students Miranda, Sarah, Georgie, Jacqui, Toneya & Beatriz who have given wonderful admin support & worked with Georgia, Nicole & Cuong on Reception since early 2011.

We hope that your exam results are pleasing, & that you will all continue in new volunteer roles with Inclusion Melbourne in 2013!

An award well deserved At the recent Inaugural Gawith Lecture one of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the Certificate of Outstanding Commitment to Hussain Alrikabi by the Hon. Jan McLucas, Commonwealth Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities & Carers. Hussain has been volunteering with Inclusion Melbourne each week for 5 years, (since June 2006), supporting Jane Bartlett to attend her weekly bingo session at the Power Neighbourhood House. He is a warm, caring, thoughtful person who has a very high regard for Jane, and is always interested in her welfare and happiness. Hussain has stated, “Jane is an integral part of my, and my wife Salma’s, life.”

Not only is Hussain a wonderful, reliable, friendly volunteer, but he is a great supporter of Jane’s support co-ordinator, Serena & I. Many thanks Hussain for all you do to support the people & the work of Inclusion Melbourne.
